Turn your iPod into a universal remote
Turn your iPod into a universal remote
07/27/2004 11:04 AMThis week's Engadget HOWTO is a project to turn your iPod into a
universal remote.
How did we do this? Basically, we “recorded” the
“sounds” an infrared remote makes on a PC and then put
them on an iPod as songs. Adding a special sound-to-IR converter then
turns those sounds back to IR and allows you to use your iPod as a
remote control. As an added bonus, it works up to 100 feet. It’s
a slick all-in-one unit and we’re never going back to 6 remotes
ever again.

iPod, iPod mini
03/31/2005 07:35 PMGriffin Technology Inc. on Thursday announced the release of their
AirClick Remote for iPod and iPod mini, a remote control designed, as
you might have guessed, to work with Apple's iPod and iPod mini. The
AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it
works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it
doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60
feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

04/29/2004 06:24 AMInternet Remote Control enables remote monitoring and control of a
DialUp connection. It also enables message communication between
connected users and remote program execution on the server. Internet
Remote Control consists of two programs: IRServer and IRClient. The
IRServer is installed on the computer that has Internet DialUp
connection, and IRClient is installed on all other computers that need
to monitor and control connection. IRServer monitors DialUp connection
and sends info to all connected clients. Clients can dial, disconnect,
communicate and run programs on server. [Freeware 1.3 MB]

is advertising a _dacp._tcp service. It looks like they are preparing
to support a remote control type thing. Ed Despard is guessing it's a
"digital audio control protocol.". (This is from the daap-dev

news I've had great success using the rating feature in iTunes and

Whistle Remote Control Fob
Whistle Remote Control Fob
02/05/2005 10:16 PM
Why this is necessary I have no idea, but it appears this
device hooks up to one's remote, allowing you to whistle codes into
it, which are then translated into an infrared signal that then
controls your television (or whatever). Or maybe it calls down a
magical bird that pecks at the buttons with its beak, I don't know.
Does it really matter? You'll look like a knob using this no matter
how it works.

It's dirty, tactically, but
if you live in a household where control of the remote has escalated
into a full-blown peacekeeping operation, this Remote Control Jammer
from GirlsStuff UK is cheap enough (at around $8) to buy multiple
units to sprinkle like land mines around the smoking battlefield of
your living room or den. (Also useful: actual land mines.) It works on
regular IR frequencies used by most common remotes, although they
don't make any promises it will work in the US. (Thanks,
Graeme!)

Unfortunately, there's only a set of volume and channel buttons, but
