Official Nintendo DS Pack-In Game
Information
09/21/2004 03:02 PMA couple of updates on the Nintendo DS launch bundle - straight
from the horses mouth, too, so you can quote us on this. First of all,
the PictoChat software will be built in to the firmware itself; it's
not a separate game cartridge. Secondly, there will be a game
bundled with the DS, sort of. Called Metroid Prime: Hunters: First
Hunt, it will be a demo showing the first level or two of the
upcoming DS game Metroid Prime: Hunters (like the Metroid game
demo'd at E3, but "better," so they say). So there you have it - the
official bundled pack in will have a demo of First Hunt, but
not a full-blown game.
And there's no official word on the Voice-Over-IP capabilities of
the DS from Nintendo yet, but that doesn't mean something isn't
happening behind the scenes.

One
of the major complaints about the Nintendo DS after its showing at E3
was that it ugly as all hell, and while I sort of thought people were
overreacting just a little, I can't say I was upset when Nintendo
unveiled this final hardware design of a much more angular and
adult-looking DS. Nintendo has confirmed that "DS" will be the
official name of the unit, as well, and it should ship in Japan around
November 4th for around €140 (~$170) and follow in the US a week
later for just a little more. The DS also has been confirmed to
include actual stereo sound without headphones and an integrated
storage place for the stylus.
Now as soon as we see what the launch titles are, we should be able to
tell if this is going to be hot or not. (Thanks, Mark!)

Nintendo announces "Electric Blue" DS
04/19/2005 11:33 AMNintendo on Tuesday announced a new colour, Electric Blue, for the
Nintendo DS. The new colour will debut in June and will join the
original "Titanuim" silver and black version of the portable gaming
device.
"This eye-catching new color comes at an ideal time," Nintendo of
America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate
communications George Harrison said. "Nearly 2 million Nintendo DS
owners in North America alone have demonstrated they want something
new from a hand-held video game system. Soon, consumers will have two
popular choices for the innovative dual-screened Nintendo DS, which
features touch-screen control, voice recognition and wireless play."
The company will also release two new DS games in June: Meteos and
Kirby: Canvas Curse.

Nintendo DS
12/19/2004 03:46 PM The hype machine has been hot and heavy for the Nintendo DS. Of
course there's always the excitement about a brand-new gaming console,
whether it's a handheld or home unit. But the DS the Dual
Screen is something altogether new. We managed to get our
hands on one and let game reviewer Ben Kuchera give it a good
rogering.
So I didn't know what to think when I hit the town looking for a
Nintendo DS. Like most of us I was skeptical of the unit at first, the
idea of a handheld with two screens and touch capabilities seemed too
gimmicky, almost as if Nintendo was getting into the PDA market. Sony
seemed ready to take the handheld crown from Nintendo with specs that
were more initially impressive.
The result? Well, we're not going to spill the beans here, but
let's just say he was pleasantly surprised. Want more detail? Read

Nintendo DS to Have Wi-Fi Voice Over IP
08/31/2004 03:07 PMInformation has come out about Nintendo's upcoming DS handheld's
ability to serve as a voice-over-IP handset, allowing DS gamers to
make phone calls when connected to a Wi-Fi access point. There's no
word if the service will allow DS users to call other, regular phones
or not. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably more likely that DS users will
be able to chat to other DS users, and not serve as an actual phone.
(Thanks, John!)
