Findory: Collaborative news aggregator 01/19/2004 11:47 AM
Greg Linden stumbled across "The Daily Me? No, the Daily Us," an old Wired piece of mine that pointed to a disadvantage of personalized news sites: they don't build communities the way paper newspapers do. (Look, it was an interesting idea in 1995.) Here's an excerpt, chosen because of its quaint reference to that other Iraqi war: The fact that the document I'm looking at is the same for all who receive it has other important effects. It establishes a baseline of expectations about what we, as a community, are all supposed to know. If, at the height of the...

Aggregator inside aggregator

Aggregator inside aggregator 09/21/2004 10:57 PM
You know whenever people post screenshots of emulators, how it can be weird to see Windows running on a Mac? (Even weirder if you actually use an emulator, until you get used to it.)

Here’s a similar side effect of having embedded a browser in NetNewsWire. (Click for full-size screen shots.)

Bloglines running inside
NetNewsWire's browserRadio UserLand. running inside
NetNewsWire's browser

Even though it’s odd, there’s actually a point to it—we discovered that some people use multiple aggregators. One for fun stuff and one for work, that kind of thing.

If one is browser-based and the other embeds a browser, then, well, hey, you’ve got something like the above.

12/17/2004 06:30 PM

The increasingly-noted Wikipedia launched WikiNews this week. WikiNews uses the open-editing structure to garner and refine news stories.

The result is a multi-feed object, somewhat like Google News . WikiNews is not without precedent, as the Korean OhMyNews service has been in operation for more than a year. Dan Gillmor argues that this may be the leading edge of popular or citizens' journalism.

GAWKER LAUNCHES ALL-CAPS HEADLINE NEWS
SITE
04/06/2005 03:21 PM

1sploid.jpgWe've launched a new site, called Sploid. Edited by Choire "Boo Boo Bear Prime" Sicha, Henry "Once Intern, Now Man" Seltzer, and Ken "Yeah, I Actually Don't Know This Guy" Layne, Sploid is like a Gawker blog but even lazier, as up-to-the-second news headlines are snarkily regurgitated in easy-to-read font sizes and just a dabbling of that always-original, never-a-Daily Show-knockoff Gawker-brand humor. And in just in case you're afraid we pinko New York liberals skew the noise to our gay/jew agenda, publisher Nick Denton reminds you that our 'political line' is "anarcho-capitalist," the same bullshit phraseology he uses to explain our pay scale.

But really, I love it already, so go give them a new first day traffic spike they'll look at wistfully for months to come.

OMG IT'S THE SITE [Sploid]

It hasn't been a great couple of weeks for Microsoft, has it? As we reported in the last issue, parts of the Windows NT and Windows 2000 source code were released (by person or persons unknown) onto the Internet. And in the newsletter before that, we discussed what could be the biggest Windows security flaw ever to be discovered: the "ASN.1" problem.

Apple has opened a version of its online store for wireless Internet users in Japan. The service is available to owners of most handsets sold by NTT DoCoMo Inc. and KDDI Corp.'s Au unit, which together account for about 82 percent of all wireless Internet subscribers in Japan. The version for Au's EZWeb service launched on March 28 and the NTT DoCoMo I-mode site went live on April 1, Apple said.
