Win XP SP2 "turns Firewire 800 into
Firewire 100"
08/12/2004 02:38 PM
The moderator of the RME forum has warned that installing Windows XP SP2 can lead to the bus speed being limited to 100Mbit/s. Matthias Carstens posted the message on the RME forum yesterday, but says it's not a problem particular to RME products. He said: "It affects any Firewire 800 device. If you have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800 hard disk, go see the bits come one by one through the Firewire cable".

RME, he said, was aware of the problem for some time, but "didn't really imagine that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an existing standard. We just downloaded the final public version and it is simply unbelievable". He said that some companies are trying to sell Firewire 800 drivers so everything will be hunky-dory. But, he said, these drivers probably won't work correctly with a Fireface 800.

Pain bites.

Pain bites. 09/20/2004 08:52 AM
No pain, no gain, they say, and when it comes to real pain, the inverse is true as well. "We now have research indicating there's a memory of chronic pain," said Dr. Doris K. Cope, director of chronic and cancer pain for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. It changes the genic code sometimes, it changes the biochemistry, and it causes new proteins to be formed." Or in other words, the more pain you have, the more pain you have. (More on this.) It's no wonder, then, that more money is spent on pain relief than any other medical problem, and that there has been so much p ain research and so many clinical trials revealing such painful facts as redhead s feel more pain, men feel less pain, and that there's a genetic difference between tough guys and wimps. (Much more pain inside.)

MP3 sound bites

MP3 sound bites 09/06/2004 11:54 PM
In the inaugural column of this series on hypermedia, I mentioned an MP3 clipping service I wrote to enable quotation of sound bites. Before I explain how it works, let's review why it exists. Audio content -- and of particular interest to me, spoken-word audio content -- is flourishing. In the tech world, Doug Kaye's ITConversations web site is a great example. It features audio interviews with IT personalities, as well as recorded speeches from conferences -- including the recent O'Reilly Open Source Convention. Kaye's audio engineering credentials are impeccable, but nowadays anyone can pick up a microphone and speak into an MP3 file. Today, for example, I listened to Dave Winer's thoughts on the business model for Wi-Fi and blogs, recorded while he was driving northward in Wisconsin. In my own journalistic work, I increasingly record and post audio interviews.

Although the amount of audio content keeps growing, the time available for listening remains constant. Until and unless we achieve a radical breakthrough in speech-to-text translation -- and I'm not holding my breath -- we'll need to find another way to make audio content more granular, and easier to consume selectively. [Full story at O'Reilly Network]
I've been using the service described here for a while now. For this column, the second in a planned series on hypermedia, I rewrote and published the code in hopes that others will be inspired to help move the project forward. ...

The following blurb appeared in my RSS reader this morning:
Paul Graham: Great Hackers
In one of the most entertaining presentations [clip] from OSCON 2004, Paul Graham answers the questions, what motivates great hackers? [clip] What do they need to do their jobs? How do you recognize them? [clip] How do you get them to come and work for you? [clip] And how can you become one?
[IT Conversations]
I missed Paul Graham's talk at OSCON, but caught some of the ripple effects -- in particular, the reaction to his trashing of Java in favor of Python. This blurb, from the IT Conversations RSS feed, gave me a link to the clip. By repeating the link here, in conjunction with some keywords -- "Paul Graham Java Python" -- I'm pretty certain that in a week or so, this Google query will lead you to the item you are now reading, and thence (if you're so inclined) to Graham's controversial remark, and thence (if you're further inclined) to the complete 30-minute segment posted by Doug Kaye at IT Conversations. ...

Dog bites AIBO

Dog bites AIBO 03/21/2003 10:17 AM
Clive sez:
Many people love showering attention on their Aibos, pretending they're real. But what about actual dogs? Are they fooled? To find out, a bunch of French scientists recently had a few real dogs interact with some Aibos. It all went quite peacefully, until the scientists decided to put a piece of meat in the room and have an Aibo and a dog compete over it. Go to their site and you enjoy what is surely a first in scientific history: Live video of a snarling dog kicking the living shit out of a hapless robot.

The best part is the explanatory note by the scientists: "The horrible screams that you hear at the end of this film were made by the experimenters, who were startled to see the dog attack the AIBO ... we strongly advise you not to try anything similar with your AIBO."

Switch ScreenshotI love IrfanView. It's a fast, lightweight little image viewer that's extremely capable for basic tasks, (that is, anything I don't want to bother starting up Photoshop for). But the one feature it doesn't have is the ability to click a spot on an image and get the HTML color value. Photoshop does this, but instead of just giving you the color (i.e. #CCBB00), it gives you a color attribute (i.e. COLOR="#CCBB00"). That was fine in 1998, but these days we're pasting those color values into stylesheets, not font tags (you ARE, right? RIGHT?), so you have to edit the color after you paste it. There are a number of little tossed-together color pickers on the web, but most of them have some annoyance or fatal flaw that makes them more trouble than they're worth.

Today I stumbled across Switch, which is a great little color picker tool. It's small, doesn't seem to crash, and it includes a little zoom window to help you hit the exact pixel you're looking for. It's even skinnable, but why anyone would spend their time re-skinning a color picker utility is beyond me.

Anyone have any favorite tools for sampling colors, or other web dev related tasks?
