Florida county loses 2002 E-voting records in computer crash Ooooops. Do your Congresspeople and Senators support verified voting ? - Check the VerifiedVoting.org database (verifiedvoting.org previously mentioned here) to see if your political reps support H.R.2239 and S.1980, the tandem bills before the U.S. House and Senate which would mandate paper-trail voting. The Paper Trail "But TIME has obtained an internal Pentagon e-mail sent by an Army Corps of Engineers official—whose name was blacked out by the Pentagon—that raises questions about Cheney's arm's-length policy toward his old employer. Dated March 5, 2003, the e-mail says "action" on a multibillion-dollar Halliburton contract was "coordinated" with Cheney's office. The e-mail says Douglas Feith, a high-ranking Pentagon hawk, got the "authority to execute RIO," or Restore Iraqi Oil, from his boss, who is Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz. RIO is one of several large contracts the U.S. awarded to Halliburton last year"

Nevada Goes With E-Voting Paper Trail As
Well
12/12/2003 04:35 AM
As predicted a few weeks back when California announced that they were requirin g a paper trail on any e-voting machine, having such a large state do so would make other states follow suit. So, the next one up appears to be Nevada who announced today that they'll require paper receipts. However, here's where the article gets weird. They're claiming that they're the first state to do so, but that seems to ignore the California announcement from last month. The only thing that might support this claim (and this isn't clear) is that the California mandate is basically: if you use electronic voting machines, there needs to be a paper trail. The Nevada announcement appears to be: everyone must use electronic voting machines and there needs to be a paper trail. Completely off topic, but, since my experience with Nevada has been that everywhere you go there will be a slot machine, why doesn't one of these voting machine companies come up with a combined slot machine/voting machine?

Diebold Will Add A Paper Trail... At A
Huge Price
12/16/2003 01:47 PM
I think it's now been determined exactly why Diebold is so afraid of adding a paper trail to their voting machines: they keep getting burned by paper trails. After emails exposed just how insecure their voting machines were, a set of internal Diebold communications show an employee suggesting that, should they be required to retrofit voting machines with paper trails that they charge ridiculously high fees to do so. Diebold has said that the cost of the printers included in a voting machine would run about $1,000 to $1,200, which may seem a bit high for a pretty simple printer. The internal memos, however, point out that this is just part of the strategy. Since they're going in and replacing or retrofitting machines that have already been bought, Diebold sees them as captive customers who will be forced to pay whatever Diebold wants.

Blazing the trail for Longhorn 07/20/2004 09:25 AM
The success of Microsoft's Windows operating system is inextricably tied to its strong developer division. Since its founding, Microsoft has supplied programmers with the tools to build applications for Windows, the company's crown jewels. S. "Soma" Somasegar has lived on both sides of the Windows developer fence. After working 15 years at the group responsible for building Windows, he became vice president of Microsoft's developer division earlier this year. There's a close technical kinship between Windows and Microsoft's .Net development platform--particularly as the company continues to heap more and more software "plumbing," such as Web services connectivity software, into Windows. And developers are instrumental to getting advanced features such as better search capabilities into commercial applications.
