Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM

img_DivX01.jpg imageNow I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that "can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?" Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film carpenters' entire families.

That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest) ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself. I'm mostly functional! (Thanks, Antii!)

Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!

DiVX video to include MP3 support

DiVX video to include MP3 support 03/17/2005 03:44 AM
THE NEXT generation of DivX video will include official support for MP3 and MP3 Surround audio, DivXNetworks told the INQ today. While MP3 audio has been used with Divx encoded movies for yonks, the official licensing of the technology from Fraunhofer and Thomson means that the codec can be used in official / legal / commercial content created with the video format, rather than just episodes of 24 downloaded from BitTorrent. The MP3 Surround codec enables 5.1 audio to be compressed in a similar and backward-compatible way to existing stereo MP3, saving space and avoiding alienating the existing installed base of MP3 devices.

Samsung A700 Won't Support Videophone

Samsung A700 Won't Support Videophone 06/02/2004 08:56 AM

a700_2.jpg imageSprintPCSInfo is reporting that the upcoming Samsung A700 will not be able to support two-way live video streaming as has been rumored, allowing only video clips to be sent from phone to phone in much the same manner as almost every newish phone on the market. The Qualcomm encoding/decoding platform does look fairly robust, though, with the ability to stream television near 30 frames per second and play back MPEG-4 Level 2 video clips (DivX/XviD, for instance) as well as 3GPP, H.263, RealVideo, and MotionJPEG. Basically, you'll be able to watch pretty much any video you want on this phone, if that's your thing.

Download-To-Own Movies: Get Less For

Download-To-Own Movies: Get Less For
More!
01/16/2004 01:03 PM
You may recall CinemaNow - the major studio backed online movie downloading company - from the review in the NY Times last year which included such great quotes as: "How CinemaNow stays in business is a marvel. The site is so marred by typos and poor programming, it could have been a high school sophomore's first Web design project." and "CinemaNow stand[s] out primarily for [its] puny selection, poor video quality and overly rigid copy protection." A ringing endorsement. Well, now it looks like they're trying to adjust their business model, and instead of just allowing people to watch movies for a limited time, they're starting up a "download-to-own" feature complete with annoying copy protection (of course). As with the download movie rentals, you get less for more. Now, instead of actually owning a DVD that you can play anywhere on any machine (and which comes with extras and perhaps a booklet with more info), you get a digital copy of the movie that is completely clamped down on the machine you downloaded it on. Also, the prices are more expensive than buying a DVD. A quick look at their featured choice for "download-to-own" shows that you can get the same movie, brand new, on DVD at Amazon for $3.75 less. They're also claiming that you can now start watching a movie 30 seconds after it begins downloading. If it really works well, that's great, but if it includes typical video buffer loading pauses, I imagine it's not going to make many movie renters happy.
