Greece gets ready for the
return of the Olympics by ridding the streets of its stray dogs.
don't watch this if you're an animal lover. Or better yet, DO if you
can handle it, because it's one of the saddest things i've seen in a
long time. Though the government of Athens is denying it is
responsible for this, someone is poisoning the city's thousands of
stray dogs by putting it in food (naturally, a stray, hungry dog will
eat it). The ensuing death does not come quickly. I've always wanted
to visit Greece, especially being from a Mediterranean family
(experience the roots, and all that) but suffice it to say it's moved
to the bottom of the list of places to visit at this point. I've seen
better treatment of animals in countries far less developed than
Greece.

The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics
The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics
08/20/2004 02:25 AMWe've already talked about how the Olympics forced certain radio
stations to
pull
their internet streams because they weren't approved for internet
broadcasts of the Olympics, and now comes the news that
no athletes participating in the games are allowed to talk
about their experiences on websites. Considering the number of
empty seats (and the weak television coverage), giving the games a
more personal feel, letting the athletes talk for themselves (rather
than those sappy profiles on TV) would help people to connect more
with the games. That, though, would involve remembering that the
games are actually about what happens in the events, and not how much
the Olympics can squeeze out of sponsors. Haven't they figured out
yet, that if no one cares about the games, no one will want to sponsor
the Olympics any more? As for those who dare to disobey and actually
talk about their experiences online? The Olympics are threatening to
remove their credentials or possibly "take legal action for any
monetary damages." Monetary
damages? From posting your
thoughts on the games? Seems pretty clear just how focused the
Olympic organizers are on money instead of the athletes and the
contests.

Don't just protect the unconceived:
protect the inanimate!
05/09/2004 02:30 PMFafnir of Fafblog has written a good think-piece explaining the
logical next step in the Bush administration's campaign to protect the
rights of the unconceived: protecting the rights of the inanimate.
This is yknow a huge step backwards for women's health and for
contraception and the prevention of abortions. But it is a huge step
forward for what we at Fafblog like to call the "rights of the
unconceived," which is just a few short steps from what we are really
lookin forward to which is the rights of the inanimate.

The FCC muddies the VOIP waters
The FCC muddies the VOIP waters
04/22/2004 09:11 AMThe FCC's
decision
to reject AT&T's voice over IP petition isn't just a defeat for
AT&T. It's a dangerous development. The FCC concluded
that AT&T has to pay access charges to local phone companies for
VOIP backbone traffic, essentially because the end-user service
involved still looks like traditional telephony.
The FCC claimed it had to make this decision to provide certainty to
the industry, and to eliminate incentives for regulatory
arbitrage. Instead, it has created confusion and even more
perverse incentives. The FCC explicitly refused to decide
whether
AT&T is retroactively liable for some $100 million in access
charges it hasn't paid in the past. And it hung its decision on
the fact that AT&T offers no "enhanced functionality" to end
users. The first is simply an abdication of responsibility; the
second reflects an unwillingness to acknowledge the flexible reality
of
voice as a data application.
These steps are bound to produce the last thing the telecom industry
needs right now: more litigation. Instead of keeping the
pressure
on for what's really essential -- broad-based reform of inter-carrier
compensation -- the FCC has ensured that companies will pour more
resources into court battles, which will ultimately kick the issues
back to the Commission.
I understand where the FCC was coming from. They see AT&T
trying to game the system. So they put their fingers in the dike
to stop further leakage from the access charge reservoir. But
the
pressure for a VOIP transition will only increase. If it's just
a
matter of time before the current system collapses, the FCC should put
its energy into figuring out the new system. Rear-guard actions
like this one will only make the transition more painful.

just two weeks away, more and more of the 447 voting members of the
