AMD introduces what I consider to be a “hybrid of Athlon and Duron CPUs”. They are calling it the AMD Sempron and it does appear to have some promise. AMD claims that while it may be a “value priced processor”, it is not without the horsepower to get the job done. For instance, they are saying that it can do office type productivity and some digital content creation as well. Sounds pretty cool, but why…

Sempron vs. Celeron D

Sempron vs. Celeron D 07/30/2004 09:00 PM
The budget PC market is one of those places where no one wants to admit going, but everyone does. Most of us have built a PC for our mom or sister or friend that needs nothing but the bare essentials and, oh, did they mention they want it dirt cheap? Such is the life of a modern day PC enthusiast. That isn't a completely fair assumption of course as I have a system in my office that was considered a "budget" system when I built it to serve as a file server for benchmark purposes. These $500 and under machines have all kinds of uses and can facilitate bringing the digital world to just about everyone. Today we are going to be looking at two options for that budget system; one based on the Intel Celeron D processor and the other on AMD's newly announced Sempron family of processors.

AMD Sempron 2800+

The Sempron family is AMD's newly announced family of processors to cater to the budget PC crowd that includes emerging markets and all the examples we used above. Where once the name of Duron stood below the Athlon, now doth Sempron. There was a gap in between the two of course where AMD's budget processors were in fact Athlon processors, just the older, slower models. You will find that in reality, that is still the case.

Intel Celeron 335

With the release of the Prescott core Pentium 4 chips, Intel has been fairly quiet about its release of the new Celeron D processor, based on the same 90nm core technology. The Celeron used to be easily knocked to the side by the lower priced Athlon XP cores but the new D revision adds to the L2 cache for a total of 256 KB.

AMD may cut Sempron prices in early May 04/14/2005 06:40 AM
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to lower the unit prices for Socket 754 Sempron processors in early May, with the maximum cut being 15%, according to Taiwan motherboard makers. The price reduction for the entry-level K8-compatible CPUs will help AMD with its plan to phase out its Socket-A processors by the end of the third quarter, according to market sources. However, according to AMD Taiwan, the company will continue producing K7 processors as customers have requested it do so.

09/13/2004 08:48 AM
SOMETIMES AMD pulls a lion out of the bag instead of the proverbial cat. The Sempron family could have been seen by most reviewers as a bunch of rebadged Thoroughbred CPUs destined at helping the channel getting rid of the last batch of Athlon XP processors. That's what in a nutshell, most of them are, from the Sempron 2300+ to the last Sempron 2800+. Basically, 333MHz Socket A Athlons with 256KB cache, in some cases. Actually, some online retailers are even rebadging on the fly, Barton Athlon XP processors to Sempron 3200+.

The Sempron 3100+ on the other hand is a brand new product and put some spice in the whole line. It is the first member of the Paris family, itself a derivative of the Newcastle family which include the first Athlon64 2800+. The three main notable differences between the Sempron 3100+ and the rest of the Athlon 64 family concerns the amount of L2 cache, 256KB instead of the usual 512KB or 1MB cache, the fact that it has a single channel DDR memory controller and a single hypertransport Link and the fact that it has no AMD64 capabilities but will include the NX bit and Cool'n'quiet features. The Sempron 3100+ is built using a 130nm SOI process, like most new AMD processors, and it has been positioned against the Intel Celeron family.

Chip firm AMD said that pressure from its customers caused it to introduce its "value" Sempron chips at the end of July, and not the 17th of August, which was its original intention, as we reported some while back. And the firm also confirmed our earlier reports that the model numbers used for its Sempron processors use a different system than before. Ryan Crouch, desktop business development manager at AMD Austin, described those as a "subset" of the existing numbers - only including suitable applications geared to the value rather than performance end of the market.

Crouch said some people had asked why AMD did not use the Athlon XP to launch its attack on Celeron Ds, which he confirmed was the target of the Sempr0n introductions. The basic answer to that was die cost, he said. Sempron chips will gradually displace Athlon XPs, but will target Celeron Ds on both price and performance. He said: "Each [AMD] brand is associated with a computing style. For each brand we have a different benchmarketing scenario"
