Study Finds Ample Opportunities for Life
Science Suppliers in the Biodefense
Market
07/28/2004 02:47 AM

Biodefense research is one of the fastest growing markets for suppliers of life science products and instrumentation. Government spending on biodefense research is likely to continue to increase at a rate exceeding investment in other areas of biological research and development, and is attracting both scientists and the companies who support them. President Bush’s authorization of the Project BioShield Act last week is but one of many government initiatives to improve the country’s defenses against bioterrorism. Since the ability to effectively combat bioterrorism largely depends on the information generated by biomedical research on disease-causing microorganisms and the immune system’s response to them, nearly $1.6 billion is allocated in 2004 to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This budget will help support basic research on potential agents of bioterrorism such as anthrax or smallpox as well as the development of vaccines, diagnostic tests and therapies to detect and counter the effects of a bioterrorist attack. How girls learn about opportunities in
math, science, and engineering
03/17/2005 03:24 AM

A 17-year-old polo champion is visiting us from Argentina and today was my day to give her the grand tour of Boston.  Naturally the MIT campus was on our agenda.  MIT's new president, Susan Hockfield, rather than doing something interesting like starting a medical school, has made her first public action beating up on Larry Summers for his musings on why there aren't an equal number of women and men in super nerdy academic jobs.  Hockfield says that "The question we must ask as a society is not ‘can women excel in math, science and engineering?’ but ‘how can we encourage more women with exceptional abilities to pursue careers in these fields?’”  I felt proud to be doing my share.  I had brought a 17-year-old girl who can do anything she wants to with her life onto the MIT campus to be inspired.  What happened?  Just downstairs from Hockfield's office we ran into a woman who recently completed a Ph.D. in Aero/Astro, probably the most rigorous engineering department at MIT.  What did the woman engineer say to the 17-year-old?  "I'm not sure if I'll be able to get any job at all.  There are only about 10 universities that hire people in my area and the last one to have a job opening had more than 800 applicants."

[Spending the day with a young person is fraught with potential for humiliation.  She looked at my collection of 2000 LP records and asked "What are those?"  When I explained that they were records, she asked "What are records?"It is too bad that the Supreme Court won't let us execute 17-year-olds anymore...]

DNA Study Finds Chihuahuas Aren't Dogs 05/28/2004 01:50 AM
?As part of an ambitious effort to identify genes that cause disease in dogs and humans, scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle analyzed DNA collected from 414 dogs representing 85 breeds, including some of the most popular. The findings have sent reverberations though the ranks of dog fanciers, who primp and preen their beloved companions for shows and take great pride in their pedigrees?.Among other findings, the analysis determined that the Chihuahua is actually a type of large rodent, selectively bred for centuries to resemble a canine.? I?m waiting for the study on ferrets? ;-) Please read the disclaimer before quoting or complaining. Thanks, Erin!

Apple leads in booming global MP3 market

Apple leads in booming global MP3 market 06/22/2005 01:54 AM
Apple is the leader in worldwide MP3 sales with 30.2 percent of the combined HDD and Flash-based MP3 market -- a market which recorded a revenue increase of 200 per cent to reach approximately $4.5 billion in 2004. In-Stat released a report today that cited falling prices, the availability of legitimate subscription and pay-per-download online music sites, smaller hard disk drives and increasing Flash memory capacities as reasons for the booming MP3 player market. "As competition heats up, vendors are striving to differentiate products by offering a wide range of price points, memory capacities and features," said Stephanie Guza, In-Stat analyst. "As a result, we are seeing increased segmentation. For example, the hard disk drive (HDD) digital audio player segment can be subdivided into two categories: the 1-inch or smaller segment and the 1.8-inch segment." In-Stat also says that survey data shows that the percentage of U.S. respondents owning a digital audio player has increased from 16% in 2001 to 25% in 2005.

Lite-On IT aims for 10-15% of the global

Lite-On IT expects to claim 10%-15% of the global market for DVD recorders in 2005, up from an estimated 8.3% this year, company president Danny Liao indicated. Lite-On IT has been developing DVD recorder technology since 2000, and the company is optimistic about the market since DVD recorders, unlike DVD players, have a high technology threshold, preventing low-priced competition from China, Liao pointed out.

Lite-On IT DVD recorders are sold in the retail channel in the US and Europe. The number of Costco outlets selling the company’s DVD recorders in the US has grown from six to about 400. The company’s Europe channel includes Dixons in the UK and Casino in France, Liao noted. In addition, Lite-On IT is making efforts to secure OEM/ODM orders from international brands, Liao added.

Study sees decline in global handset

Study sees decline in global handset
market
06/22/2005 02:56 AM

The global handset market will slow down, so companies must target new demographics and create innovative marketing strategies for existing users, according to a new study by consultancy Frost & Sullivan.

Although the total number of mobile handsets sold is expected to rise, the average price of each unit is expected to fall as vendors aim at emerging markets. Overall, worldwide revenues are projected to fall by nearly 16 percent by the end of the decade -- from $126.28 billion in 2004 to $106.59 billion in 2010.

The study, which described the current era in the handheld industry as one of "transition," offered suggestions to help handset companies attempt to turn the trend around. One way for the industry to gain revenue is to market newer and more expensive technology to existing handheld users, Frost & Sullivan said. For instance, the "smart phone," which includes a mobile phone, a PDA (personal digital assistant), and a notebook computer all in one, could appeal to current and former users because such a device is easier to carry than several different devices.

Another important move for mobile handheld device companies is to market toward the technology friendly youth market. Young people between the ages of 13 and 25 offer a lucrative revenue stream and the youth market represents demand for a variety of applications such as downloading ringtones, text messaging and interactive gaming. In fact, youths' downloading of ringtones accounts for the majority of the industry's current revenue.

But perhaps more important is another universal characteristic young customers in particular represent -- the demand for similar quality in wireless devices as in the wired Internet and the unwillingness to settle for less, the study said.

The study, which surveyed hundreds of companies, added that the industry should be -- and is -- turning its focus to emerging markets around the world. By moving production facilities to new regions that will soon experience greater wireless penetration the companies will be able to save on production costs and create proximity to the untapped markets.

The study suggested that though revenues are expected to decline, consumer electronics is still shifting more and more toward mobile devices. It hinted that the handheld industry will have a chance to capitalize as long as companies aggressively explore markets and demographics and respond quickly to the customers' need for personalized and integrated wireless equipment.
