"These people always complain," said Graham Thorn, a psychiatrist, in a Chicago Tribune article about racial tensions in Australia. "They want it both ways--their way and our way. They want to live in our society and be respected, yet they won't work. They steal, they rob and they get drunk. And they don't respect the laws." The problem isn't that Graham Thorn didn't say that; as blogger Tim Blair uncovered,< /a> the problem is that Graham Thorn never existed. [more inside]

Getting a Handle on URNs

Getting a Handle on URNs 05/25/2004 05:26 AM
Getting a Handle on URNs by Glyn Moody
http://snipurl.com/6my9

It is extraordinary how in just over a decade Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) have entered everyday life to such an extent that they are now found practically everywhere - from the side of buses to the back of cornflake packets. But this universality tends to mask the fact that they suffer from a serious defect. Everyone has encountered the problem, which manifests itself as the dreaded "404 page not found" message. The trouble is that changes in site design, file directories and domain names can easily make a URL obsolete, with no means of automatically redirecting to the new Internet location (where it exists). What is needed is a standard way of permanently naming a digital resource similar to that provided by the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) for analogue books. The solution is to move from URLs to URNs: Uniform Resource Names. The important thing about URNs is that they do not point directly to an Internet resource, but are rather a placeholder for the location and other metadata. This means that the URN does not need to change if the URL does: it is enough to update the redirection.

Getting a Handle on Traffic

Getting a Handle on Traffic 01/03/2003 12:47 AM
Linux Magazine talks about building our own web serverreporting tools."Unfortunately, most tools can't answer all those kinds of questions out of the box. To answer those questions, you typically need to extend an existing tool, write your own tool, or spend some quality time with awk, grep, and wc.Or, you can turn to LAMP. By combining Linux, Apache (and mod_log_sql), MySQL, and PHP, you can build a customized logging and reporting system without a lot of effort."

Larry's U.S. Navy Airship Picture Book. No longer available in paper, but still with us in bits. Lawre nce F. Rodrigues served in the Navy, in Airship Squadron 3, out of Lakehurst NAS, beginning in 1953. This website presents photos and memories of his service days. It's fascinating.

As a bonus, you may wish to read up on the Deta ils of Modern Airship Construction, ca. 1927, or to return to Dannysoar's site to observe the plans for a twelve-foot model helium-lofted rubber-band powered flying stick-and-tissue dirigible (scroll down a bit).

Cal Berkeley Demonstrates How Not to

Cal Berkeley Demonstrates How Not to
Handle Security
03/29/2005 08:00 PM

On March 11th a thief walked into a University of Cal at Berkeley office and walked out with a laptop. This laptop had personal information on it from about 100,000 alumni. Now if that wasn’t bad enough, they did not announce it to the public until now. University officials were hoping that police would be able to catch the thief and reclaim the computer. When that didn't happen, the school publicized the theft to comply with a state law requiring consumers be notified whenever their Social Security numbers or other sensitive information have been breached. The university has set up a hotline, 1-800-372-5110, and a Web site, to answer questions about the laptop theft.http://newscenter .berkeley.edu/security/grad/

From the AP .. Universities have accounted for 28 percent of the 50 security breaches of personal information recorded by California since 2003, said Joanne McNabb, the chief of the state's Office of Privacy Protection. That's more than any other group, including financial institutions, which have accounted for 26 percent of the breaches affecting Californians. This is the second time in six months that UC Berkeley has been involved in a theft of personal information. Last September, a computer hacker gained access to UC Berkeley research being done for the state Department of Social Services. The files contained personal information of about 600,000 people. That security breach hasn't been linked to any cases of identity theft, Felde said.

You get all the email you can handle -
and all the spam you deserve

You get all the email you can handle -
and all the spam you deserve
01/16/2004 11:03 AM
Janka speaks of spam, everyones' favourite subject. I got 4700 filtered spam messages in six weeks (and a bunch that got through). On one account. More on others, to a perhaps of 6000-7000 messages total. That's about a thousand a week, or 150/day.

There's a theory that everyone gets the amount of spam they deserve. There's also a theory that suggests that if you stop receiving spam, you don't exist any more. Or that if you read aloud all the spam you receive for a year and a day, you will be granted three wishes by the Xanax fairy. I believe that one of them must have something to do with the size of your penis, though.

Whatever the case, it has been suggested that everyone always gets more email than what they can handle - I've heard people complain that "I got FOUR emails today - I'm swamped". I get perhaps fifty legitimate emails on the average (not counting mailing lists), and I think that's about the limit I can handle. Is there anyone out there who thinks they are getting too few emails?
