On scientific truth and Christian
truth...

On scientific truth and Christian
truth...
07/16/2004 06:40 AM

In the middle of an article about the way that the religious right have interfered with scientific work in the US, I find a troubling paragraph:

At a time when biology is poised to undergo a fundamental revolution, the US government, arguably the most potent government in the history of the world, is rife with White House appointees who believe that scientific truth and Christian truth cannot be synonymous, and may well be in opposition.

I ask myself - do I believe that scientific truth and Christian truth can be synonymous? My answer - no. I ask myself - do I believe that they may well be in opposition? My answer - yes. The only difference between me and the people from the religious right then, is that we disagree with which 'truth' is the more reliable. I stick on the side of the people who test their conclusions and refine their belief systems with reference to evidence - they stick to the side of the people who believe that a magic being sets bushes on fire and turns women into salt.

So the scary bit for me is not that the nutters in power believe that the two are incompatible, but that the assumption is that for reasonable, normal, run-of-the-mill scientists all across America that it's normal to be able to reconcile meteorology with the concept of rains of blood and biology with people who bring people back from the dead...

ISP Actively Seeking Laid Off US Workers

ISP Actively Seeking Laid Off US Workers 02/17/2004 05:57 AM
While everyone is worried about the offshoring trend, one discount ISP is looking to take advantage of the trend here in the US. Knowing that bigger rival Earthlink has been shutting down US call centers, upstart ISP Joi Internet is actively seeking out laid off Earthlink workers to hire in their US call centers. The company has been making a name for itself by offering insanely cheap dialup service with free tech support (all US-based, apparently), and they're finding the labor situation in the US works to their advantage. They can hire ex-Earthlink employees who can get up to speed much faster and don't need quite as much training as others.

iPods have allowed them to create personal playlists that they carry along as a soundtrack to their lives. When they publish their playlists to Rendezvous networks in their dorms, other students surf those playlists to get an idea what people are like. By Mitch Ratcliffe, RatcliffeBlog

Star Wars Galaxies economy laid bare

Star Wars Galaxies economy laid bare 05/03/2004 12:13 PM
Raph Koster, Supreme Dictator of the Star Wars Galaxies online game, has posted detailed stats about the SWG monetary supply and flow. Ted Castronova, the leading MMO economist in the (very small) field, says "So rather than say that something is wrong from an economic policy point of view - I don't know that, hell, an army of Stanford Nobel laureates can't know that, not yet - all I can say is that something in these numbers makes me uncomfortable."
SWG uses what is called a faucet-drain economy. You can visualize a spigot of cash coming into the game, a big ol' sink where the money sloshes around, and a set of drains where the money goes out the bottom. When money comes in from the faucet, it's actually being "minted" - it's being created by the game system. The sink is basically the whole game. It's the bank accounts, the player inventories, all the money that is used for trades and transactions among players, etc. When money goes out the bottom, it's deleted from the system, rather than circulating back to a central bank.

(Credits aren't the only thing that is generated, of course - a significant faucet into the game economy actually comes in the form of resource mining. Since the amount of money and the amount of resources coming into the game at a time both vary, you get small fluctuations in the price of resources as the value of both the resources and the currency changes. Plus, you also get different qualities of resources that affect the price. But we're not really talking about commodities pricing today, much as just about the value of a credit).
