Konsposé was introduced in Konfabulator 1.7 as a way to bring forward all your Widgets by pressing the F8 key. The 1.7.1 upgrade adds a preference pane in the Gear menu that allows you to switch Konsposé to a different key and decide whether to use a simpler version of it if you're running an older Mac. Sputnik rolls out additional hotspot management features: Sputnik is the little company that could, and I don't mean it patronizingly. The company from its founding has continued to chart the course of best answering the needs of the customers that they find are most in need of their product. Sure, that's the way that all companies should work, but Sputnik has stayed small and focused and their "niche" product has increasingly broad applications as a result. Their latest addition to their managed access point software package are two important billing options that provide hotspot operators with a great deal of flexibility in accepting payment from their customers at the least ongoing cost. A PayPal module ($299, 100 APs, no transaction fees) integrates Sputnik's Control Center software into the massive payment system to allow one-time payments for use. Hotspot operators set the price. Interestingly, operators can also opt to work with a third-party, OurWebPortals, that can handle PayPal payments for hotspot access through the Sputnik system for a $50 setup fee and transaction fees based on monthly volume. A more elaborate module integrates Control Center with Aria Systems' billing and customer management system for handling accounts and fees. This lets hotspot operators set up billing plans while customer can pay by bank transfer or credit card. Aria manages the account infrastructure. This module is $499 for up to 100 APs, with additional fees charged by Aria for their part of the equation....

Konfabulator 2.0

Konfabulator 2.0 06/22/2005 01:58 AM

Before there was Dashboard, there was Konfabulator. While Apple was working on bringing Dashboard to Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), Konfabulator was getting ready for Windows. Ars Technica reviews Konfabulator 2.0 for Windows.

Konfabulator manages little programs called "widgets" that do little tasks that you probably perform frequently and should be all but completely automated. For example, think about what's needed to check the weather report online. You could fire up a web browser, navigate to your favorite site, punch in your ZIP code... You could also get a little system tray app that continuously polls a weather service. This is an improvement, but it takes up prime real estate on your screen. Instead, you can use the Konfabulator weather widget. It provides a small graphical display of the weather for the next few days.

Konfabulator still runs on Mac OS X, but this review looks at the Windows version. If you are a Windows user who has been wondering what all the fuss over Dashboard is about, now's the chance to see for yourself.

What sets Konfabulator apart from other scripting applications is that it takes full advantage of today's advanced graphics. This allows Widgets to blend fluidly into your desktop without the constraints of traditional window borders. Toss in some sliding and fading, and these little guys are right at home in Windows XP and Mac OS X.

The Konfabulator Controversy

The Konfabulator Controversy 06/30/2004 10:45 PM

inessential.com: Weblog: What should Apple do?: There's a bit of a controversy brewing in Macland about the WWDC conference and the Konfabulator knockoff Apple introduced called Dashboard. The theory is that Apple saw a great third-party app that people loved, and decided it needed to be part of the OS itself.

Apple can’t do everything — they need other developers to make software for OS X too. What concerns me is the message the Dashboard thing sends. It goes like this, "If you come up with a good idea and develop a successful product, we might copy it and bundle it for free with the OS."

The Konfabulator folks, for their part, are having some fun with it, poking fun of the posters that poked fun at Microsoft with a banner on their site that says, "Cupertino [where Apple is based], start your photocopiers!"

Konfabulator was apparently written by some ex-Apple employes, and they had this to say:

Regarding the conspiracy theory about Konsposé and prior knowledge of Dashboard, here's the scoop. We knew Dashboard was coming, and we'd been told by *many* people that it was being developed as a "Konfabulator Killer". We never knew the specifics of it other than it was rumored to be the exact same thing as Konfabulator integrated at the system level. We didn't know that it was going to be touted as part of Exposé, and we didn't know that their format was going to be closer to a web page than a structured XML file.

The threat of having the OS subsume your original work is a threat Windows developers have lived with for years. I've always wondered what happened to WinZip and PKZip sales when Windows XP was introduced with integrated zip functionality.

MacGamer Konfabulator Review

MacGamer Konfabulator Review 03/19/2003 10:25 PM
Pat Miller: "Opening the Konfabulator application at first produces no blatantly visible change to your computer - all it does is add a little menu to your menu bar. Rather, Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime that lets you run all sorts of neat little mini-apps, called "Widgets", by plugging them into Konfabulator. It's kind of like how ye olde Desk Accessories (does anyone actually remember those) of yore should have been."

No real surprise that Apple pulled a Microsoft stunt in making an announcement that will probably cause a competitor to go belly up. You will have to check out the Konfabulator website. After you do that then you have to take a look at the posters Apple had hung up that suggested Microsoft would be chasing Apple. Seems Apple is chasing Konfabulator. Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me.
