For Audio Players, a Chance to Cut the
Cord
03/06/2004 01:53 AMELECTRONIC devices have been cutting the cord for years, with one
notable exception: portable music players. From the earliest Walkman
to the latest fashion-accessory MP3 player, music on the go has
generally meant cables trailing from ears to pocket or purse. But a
short-range communications technology based on magnetism may mean
those days will finally be on the wane.
Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players
Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players
03/19/2005 02:45 AM
Panasonic introduced a few portable audio players yesterday that we
forgot to mention (although they leaked way back in October), in
the "D-snap Audio" line. We'll start with the "SV-SD100V" and
"SV-SD90" square-shaped players with SD card slot (and only an SD card
slot). They also have a mirrored organic EL display, and compatibility
with MP3, WMA and AAC. In fact, the SV-SD100V throws in an FM tuner
and voice recorder.
Also announced were the "SV-MP720V" and "SV-MP730V." Their
interesting "two block" design actually won Panasonic a
design award. The two units vary only in capacity, color
variations and price. Both are MP3 and WMA compatible and have an FM
tuner/voice recorder you probably won't ever use. A sort of
disappointing 10-hour battery life on these.

AmaroK is a step up for Linux audio
players
03/14/2005 04:05 PMWith the release of amaroK 1.2 last month, I finally found the Linux
music player I've been wanting. When I moved to Linux full-time about
two years ago, the only software that I missed from Windows was a
quality audio player. Linux audio players lacked features like cover
downloads, smart playlists, or easy burning to CD. Even worse, with a
large collection of more than 10,000 tracks, the Linux players
generally locked up when I tried to load them all, or at least slowed
to an unbearable crawl. AmaroK has all of the basic features of modern
Windows audio players, and some features that I haven't seen in any
other player.

Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM
Now I'm sure you'll correct
me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services
offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does
Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player
firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that
"can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?"
Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film
carpenters' entire families.
That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the
company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD
flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest)
ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself.
I'm mostly functional! (Thanks, Antii!)
Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!

Two new mobile
players in BenQ's Joybee line, the Joybee 102 and the Joybee 180
(pictured right). The 102 is billed as the world's smallest, a
moderately-contested title that we'll let those to whom size matters
sort out, and comes in 128MB and 256MB versions and three different
colors. It is also interesting to note that along with Windows and
MacOS, the Joybee is specifically listed as support Linux.
The Joybee 180 is slightly more interesting, with a built-in FM
transmitter/receiver/recorder, interchangeable face plates, and a
'walkie-talkie' feature -- no idea if it can communicate with any
other devices besides other Joybees. It beats its little brother in
battery life, too, with the Joybee 180 getting 15 hours compared to
the Joybee 102's 8.

Nomic World: By the players, for the

05/26/2004 03:15 PM
[This is an edited version of the talk I gave last fall at the
State of Play
conference.]
I'm sort of odd-man-out in a Games and Law conference, in that my
primary area of inquiry isn't games but social software. Not only am I
not a lawyer, I don't even spend most of my time thinking about game
problems. I spend my time thinking about software that supports group
interaction across a fairly wide range of social patterns.
So, instead of working from case law out, which has been a theme here
(and here's where I insert the "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer) I'm
going to propose a thought experiment looking from the outside in.
And I want to pick up on something that Julian [Dibbell] said earlier
about game worlds: 'users are the state.' The thought experiment I
want to propose is to agree with that sentiment, and to ask "How far
can we go in that direction?"
Instead of looking for the places where game users are currently suing
or fighting one another, forcing the owners of various virtual worlds
to deal with these things one crisis at a time, I want to ask the
question "What would happen if we wanted to build a world where we
maximized the amount of user control? What would that look like?"
I'm going to make that argument in three pieces. First, I'm going to
do a little background on group structure and the tension between the
individual and the group. Then I want to contrast briefly governance
in real and virtual worlds. Finally I want to propose a thought
experiment on placing control of online spaces in the hands of the
users.

said the security vulnerabilities of the older version pose
significant risks to users and they should upgrade to the new kernel
as soon as possible. One of the flaws fixed by the new kernel allows a
hacker to change the privileges of a user account to those of the

intruders. Improvements to the 2.4 series kernel have otherwise been

iTunes in Linux
iTunes in Linux
08/03/2004 12:48 PMThe WINE configuration gurus
over at Codeweavers have
announced that their next version of Crossover Office will allow iTunes to play nicely on your Linux box.
For those unfamiliar with the product, Crossover Office allows MS
Office, Photoshop, and many other Windows programs to run quite nicely
on your Linux boxen.
"iTunes has been our No. 1 most requested application,"
CodeWeavers CEO Jeremy White said in a statement. "We remain confident
that by the end of 2005, the majority of Windows applications will be
supported by CrossOver Office. Until then, we're pleased to be
bringing the appeal of iTunes to Linux users through the development
of version 3.1."
That's quite a feat, given the fact that the audio subsystem in
Linux is a little tough to get going in the first place (at least on
my machines).
