Tatung V620: Second Gen PMC

Tatung V620: Second Gen PMC 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

tatung_v620.jpgBargainPDA has details about the upcoming Tatung V620, a Microsoft Portable Media Center-compatible device that will be released in the US (unlike most other Tatung products). The V620 is smaller than most other PMCs (except the Samsung YH-999 it seems to me), but is most interesting as a second-generation PMC device, which means it will play other video formats beyond WMV, like DivX. The reason the PMC platform has failed (by my reckoning, at least) is that it's dumb to buy video players that only play one format, especially when non-Microsoft-branded models play almost anything you can throw at them. The Windows Media Center integration, however, is a nice feature, so if the 2nd gen PMCs can do all that and more, they'll be worth considering again.

Moto-licious< /h3>

Looks like shipping new and cool phones like the V600 is finally paying of for Motorola. The company reported a fantastic quarter. The handset group sold 24.1 million units with ASPs at $161. With selling prices in line with the prior quarter and operating margins actually going up sequentially to 10.1% from 9.8%, Motorola doesn't seem affected by the Nokia price cuts. MOT shipped 52% more handsets than this time last year, which is due to the underpinnings of the explosive industry and MOT's success at focusing on the mid range, specifically, camera phones and color screens. Total revenues for the quarter $8.49 billion and earnings were 21 cents a share!

IBM: The new Motorola?

IBM: The new Motorola? 08/21/2004 12:47 PM
If you've tried to order a G5 within the last few months, you've likely experienced a bit of a delay, something that we Apple fans have unfortunately been privy to on a fairly regular basis. However, with processor yields at — or near — the same time last year (and nor much different elsewhere) the delay is a bit confounding. For years, Apple faithful blamed all of its troubles on Motorola — if Power Macs were too slow; if PowerBooks ran too hot; if availability was lagging, etc. So, when Steve Jobs took the stage last April and proudly held an uncut 300mm wafer, proclaiming, "This is only the beginning. We have already built the prototypes for next-generation Power PC microprocessors," the industry was abuzz. With Apple driving and IBM navigating, things were certainly looking up. So, too, when Steve promised a 1 GHz jump within a year, it seemed plausible. It wasn't until nearly a year later when the Power Mac began to show some real signs of fatigue. It’s only been updated once since its ceremonious unveiling in June 2003 and — despite a very similar lineup — <A HREF="http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/newsfinder/pulseone.asp?sit eid=mktw&dist=nbs&guid=%7B8E7EFC47-0057-4678-A141-A11F5238B7B2%7D" ;>reports</A> of "IBM's ability to produce enough G5 chips" persist. With a new G5-sporting iMac on the horizon, there's ample reason to worry. ThinkSecret is <AHREF="http://www.thinksecret.com/news/imacg5specs.html" >calling</A> for yields of 1.6 and 1.8 GHz chips, both of which are nothing new to Apple's lineup. However, IBM has had increasing trouble keeping up with demand for the Power Mac, what’s going to happen when the iMac catches consumers' eyes? Of course, there could be an explanation for all this. Perhaps Apple is finally playing the odds — with G4 iMacs all by washed up, and a promise that "an all-new iMac line which will be announced and available in September," the company may have decided to hoard the remaining G5 processors to produce as little wait time as possible for the new iMac. Since it’s so close to back-to-school, any delay could put a severe dent in sales. While it remains to be seen whether IBM’s high-tech plant in Fishkill, N.Y. can catch up to demand, perhaps we can all take some of the blame off of Motorola. In fact, with the new mobile phone partnership and a new dual-core processor (see tomorrow’s article), Motorola is poised to become a big player at Apple once again. Perhaps the G4 has life after all… or perhaps the real performance comes when the spotlight’s off.
