South African villages to get digital

South African villages to get digital
cinema network
04/05/2005 09:23 PM
Xeni Jardin: Excerpt from Variety article:
The vast majority of South Africa's 40-million people have never been to the cinema, kept away by the legacy of apartheid, poverty and language barriers. But the nation's exhibs are hoping to change that by using the indigenous filmmaking along with digital technology to connect to the missing multitudes (...)

Starting in September, Shout Africa will roll out 20 digital cinemas around the country where facilities are most lacking, to make the movies affordable and accessible. Shout Africa chief executive Lance Samuels says that for local producers, these cinemas will provide another distribution outlet as well as the opportunity to build new audiences.

Locally produced films in indigenous languages and English will be shown alongside foreign features, with subtitles in the vernacular language of the region of the cinema.Besides the usual popcorn and soft drinks, popular traditional township foods such as maize porridge, spicy sausages, samp (hominy), mealies (corn on the cob) and fried chicken will be on sale to help make the d-cinema experience more African.

Samuels says d-cinemas will be located in revamped township community centers to create a quality experience, including comfortable chairs, high quality digital projection and state of the art surround sound. And, hoping to seal the deal, prices will be much lower than at urban multiplexes.

Wonder what kind of gear the company will be installing? Will this be true cinema-grade digital projection, or something cruddier and lower-res (and, hence, more affordable)? Either way, it's fascinating news, and points to one of the greatest promises of this technology. Which hardware manufacturer(s) will be involved?

Here's more info on the "Shout Africa" d-cinema initiative, Link, by way of Sithengi -- a company that promotes the South African television and film industry.

Link to Variety story (paid sub required, but the story seems to be largely cribbed from the Sithengi press release anyway... )

South Africa, 10 years on.

South Africa, 10 years on. 12/30/2004 08:00 PM
10 years of freedom. This past year marked a full decade since South Africa held true elections. The CBC held interviews with four prominent S. Africans. Writer Zakes Mda, Leader of the Independent Democrats Patricia de Lille, Albie Sachs - judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, and Bulelani Ngcuka - The National Director of Public Prosecutions.
There are problems (of course), first hand reports still indicate rampant racism (As mentioned from Wired to AllAfrica.com) Some serious corr uption charges have been leveled against members of the ANC. Poverty and AID S both remain high. Despite these issues I cannot but have hope, and believe that this was the way a people should seek liberation. Congrats S.A. I hope the future continues to improve for you.

Stoned in South Africa?

Stoned in South Africa? 08/04/2004 10:04 AM
A woman in the South African province of Limpop was booted from her village because a hail of stones seems to follow her wherever she goes. Apparently, the problem is caused by an evil spell cast on her by a trader when she didn't pay him back for some clothes she purchased on credit:
"We were there for nearly the whole night and saw stones falling from the sky like rain," said Vhembe police spokesperson Ailwei Mushavhanamadi. "We went around the area to make sure someone wasn't throwing stones on the roof on purpose, but we didn't find anyone."

Police then advised the family to consult with spirit mediums about the phenomenon.

"Maybe if the family contacts someone who deals with evil spirits, like a pastor, the problem will stop," he said.

One of the most interesting presentations at this fantastic conference was given by Eve Gray, of Eve Gray & Associates. Gray was asked to study the publishing strategy of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in South Africa. This research institution had a traditional strategy of publishing lots of research books, and selling them. Gray convinced them to change their strategy -- to give away all their research books for free online, and offer a high quality print-on-demand service for anyone who wants the paper version. The result: "the sales turnover of the publishing department has risen by 300%." As she concluded her presentation, "giving away books and lead to an increase in our book sales." There's much much more in her interesting analysis. She has generously offered it for downloading. Here's the press release.

Creative Commons South Africa Launch

Creative Commons South Africa Launch 06/17/2005 05:02 PM

Week before last, Creative Commons South Africa officially launched at the Commons-Sense: Towards an African Digital Information Commons conference in Johannesburgh. The launch event and conference, primarily organized by Heather Ford, South Africa Project Lead, and Andrew Rens, South Africa Legal Lead, was nothing short of spectacular.

The launch event on the night preceeding the conference was well attended by leaders in arts, technology, education, and government. South Africa-based band 340 Milliliters rocked the house alongside an art gallery of Creative Commons licensed works.

Following the launch began the 2-day Commons-Sense conference sponsored by the LINK Centre (at Wits University) and funded by the International Development Research Centre. The groundbreaking conference collected 120 leaders from around Africa, and the world, to talk about what a digital commons means specifically to the social and economic context of the continent. There was a terrific bill of speakers who addressed issues including access to knowledge, open access publishing, traditional culture IP, medicines, free trade agreements, and technology.

Specifically worth mentioning was a talk given by Eve Gray from the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa, who discussed how HSRC's early experiments with open access publishing paid off. As they made their research papers available for free download, the print revenues went up by 270%.

The conference was well reported on, with a crew of young journalists from the New Media Lab covering the blow-by-blow with blogs, images, and videos from the conference, in addition to a great article written in Business Day about the launch event.

There was much hope that this conference would be a jumping off point for greater activism in Africa using technology, and tools like Creative Commons as enablers for social and economic development.
