The first beta of TopStyle Pro 3.12 is now available to registered TopStyle customers. My apologies for taking so long to get this beta out - I had intended to release it a couple of months ago, but needed to delay it until the acquisition by NewsGator was completed.

Note that feedback on this beta should be posted in the TopStyle 3.12 BETA forum on NewsGator's site, so you'll need to register in NewsGator's forums to gain access. We had hoped we could simply import forum members from my site so that registration wouldn't be necessary, but unfortunately this turned out not to be possible.

Enjoy :)

Whither TopStyle?

Whither TopStyle? 04/23/2004 12:05 PM

I've had a number of questions lately concerning the future of TopStyle, which is understandable given that it's been a year since TopStyle was updated.

The short answer: TopStyle will certainly be updated. Even though FeedDemon is getting more attention these days (since it's new), the truth is that TopStyle sells more copies. And besides, I use TopStyle every day to maintain my site - so even if sales dried up, I'd keep it updated for my own use!

So why has it been so long since an update? My recen t surgery aside, the biggest reason for the delay is that I spent several months working on TopStyle 4.0, and it was a disaster. The primary features I worked on were these:

  • Scripting (automation) through an exposed object model
  • Unicode support in the editor
  • Collapsible code sections
  • Extensible syntax highlighting and code completion for PHP and ASP
  • Extensible palette of snippets
  • Completely redesigned projects
Each of these features had been requested many times by customers, so I wanted to add all of them to version 4.0. Unfortunately, every one of these features - especially Unicode support - required making huge changes to TopStyle's foundation. Adding them all at once to the existing code base was too much, and resulted in a ungodly mess of code that even I couldn't use, let alone hand over to paying customers. In short, my first attempt at TopStyle Pro 4.0 was a failure.

So what now? Well, once I return to work I plan to continue development of FeedDemon 1.10 in parallel with TopStyle Pro 3.11, which will be a free upgrade from the current version. As the version number suggests, 3.11 will be primarily a bug-fix release. Once that's out the door, I'll start over with version 4.0, only this time with a more manageable set of improvements.

In the meantime, I'm just cocky enough to point out that despite the long delay, other web authoring tools are still playing catch-up with TopStyle Pro 3.10 even though it's over a year old :)

TopStyle 3.12 in the Works

TopStyle 3.12 in the Works 03/14/2005 06:24 PM

I hadn't planned to release a new version of TopStyle so soon after coming out with versi on 3.11, but I've decided that one is necessary to resolve a few remaining bugs (including this one).

It will be a few weeks before I'm ready to post a beta of TopStyle 3.12, so it's too early for me to state exactly what will be in the new version. But among the other issues I'll address is the oft-reported problem of Mozilla "swallowing" the focus away from TopStyle's editor (describe d here). Although this bug is actually in Mozilla rather than in TopStyle itself, I'm assuming that it will never be corrected in Mozilla (after all, the Bugzilla report of this problem has existed for almost two years), so I'm going to code a workaro und in TopStyle.

The beta will be available only to existing TopStyle customers, and will be announced here when it's ready.

SitePoint on TopStyle

SitePoint on TopStyle 08/05/2004 02:28 PM

SitePoint has some very kind words for TopStyle today. TopStyle LITE gets most of the attention since the article is about free Windows web design tools, but they also give kudos to TopStyle PRO:

"TopStyle Pro is the complete package, capable of high-level editing on much more than just CSS. At around $US80, it represents real value for anyone who spends a significant part of their day working with CSS. The browser profiles alone are worth the entry price."

Renaming TopStyle?

Renaming TopStyle? 06/11/2004 09:34 AM

First off, many thanks to everyone who commented on yeste rday's post about TopStyle Lite. There are a lot of good ideas in these comments, one of which is the idea of renaming TopStyle Pro.

I've actually been thinking about renaming TopStyle Pro for quite a while, but given how many people know the name "TopStyle" I just never did it. The reason for the rename, of course, is that TopStyle is no longer just a style editor - it's a full- blown xHTML editor with an emphasis on CSS.

Now, I don't plan to ever change TopStyle's focus on CSS. After all, the CSS tools are by far the biggest reason people use TopStyle. But its name just doesn't reflect its feature set any more, and given the number of requests for even better HTML features, I'm wondering whether the next major release should coincide with a rename.

Comments?

TopStyle 3.12 Status

TopStyle 3.12 Status 04/11/2005 03:03 PM

TopStyle 3.12's improved class/id
hyperlinkingLast month I menti oned that I'm working on TopStyle 3.12, which will be a free upgrade from version 3.x. I don't have a release date yet, but here's a teaser on what it will include:

One of the TopStyle's most popular features is class hyperlinking, which enables one-click navigation to the declaration of a CSS class. However, this feature doesn't currently support the use of multiple classes (ex: <p class="class1 class2">), nor does it support id attributes - and both of these items have been requested many, many times.

I'm happy to report that over the weekend I completed work on both of these features, and they will be included in TopStyle 3.12.

PS: I'll announce the new version here when it's available.

Progress on TopStyle Pro 3.11

Progress on TopStyle Pro 3.11 06/24/2004 02:46 PM

Even though I'm posting more about FeedDemon lately, most of my work these days has been with the upcoming TopStyle Pro 3.11. Version 3.11 will focus on bug fixes rather than new features, and will be a free upgrade for existing 3.10 customers. I don't have an expected release date at the moment, but it shouldn't be more than a few weeks before a beta is available.

BTW, among the problems fixed already are these two bugs, which have been the most commonly reported ones:

  • The file panel paints a "ghost" image when the screen resolution is above 1024x768 (only occurs on certain graphics cards)
  • Access violation on Windows 98 when viewing files that have a corrupt (or missing) creation date

XP SP2 and TopStyle, FeedDemon

XP SP2 and TopStyle, FeedDemon 08/12/2004 04:40 PM

Last night I created a VMware< /a> virtual machine for the new Windows XP SP2 in order to test both TopStyle and FeedDemon with it, and I'm relieved to report that they both work fine.

I'm not so relieved, however, to report that installing SP2 on my development machine didn't go so well. After installing SP2, rebooting then logging in, I was greeted with a blank desktop (no taskbar, no icons, no nothing). Lucikly, I was able to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to task manager and launch apps from there, but after troubleshooting for a few hours I gave up and simply uninstalled SP2. If you're planning to install SP2, I hope you have better luck than I did!

I know a number of people are anxious for me to release the first TopStyle Pro 3.11 beta, so I wanted to let everyone know that it's almost ready. I've been running a build of v3.11 here for a couple of weeks and it looks solid, so I expect to make the beta available early next week.

As I menti oned earlier, v3.11 is a bugfix release, so it won't have any major new features. Just in case anyone's curious about the changes, I've posted the current release notes.

Yes, TopStyle is an HTML editor!

Yes, TopStyle is an HTML editor! 05/05/2004 11:12 AM

Given that its name is TopStyle, it's not surpising that so many people still think it's only for editing style sheets. TopStyle did start out strictly as a CSS editor, but starting with version 3.0 it blossomed into a full-blown HTML editor for hand coders.

Every week I get people asking me to recommed an HTML editor to use with TopStyle and invariably they're stunned to hear that they can use TopStyle to edit HTML, so I thought I'd take a moment to highlight TopStyle's great HTML editing features.

First and foremost, TopStyle is simply the best tool for CSS creation and validation - nothing else comes close. If you already use TopStyle for CSS, why switch to another app just to edit your HTML? As this page illustrates, there are many time-saving benefits to using an HTML editor which knows so much about CSS.

When you're ready to preview your work, you'll love how TopStyle provides a side-by-sid e IE/Mozilla preview which enables viewing your HTML in both browsers at the same time.

You also won't find better HTML validation in any other tool. Why? Because TopStyle integrates directly with the W3C HTLML Validator as well as the CSE HTML Validator. And of course you can use TopStyle's HTML Tidy integration to clean up your HTML - and even convert your HTML to XHTML.

But perhaps the biggest benefit is that unlike other HTML editors, TopStyle was designed from the ground up to help create standards-compliant XHTML. Most other HTML editors were created several years ago during the "tag soup" stage of HTML, so their XHTML support was grafted onto a rickety foundation. Plus, TopStyle isn't overloaded with toolbuttons that insert outdated HTML tags. Instead, you rely on simpl e, customizable keyboard shortcuts for inserting HTML tags, which keeps TopStyle's UI uncluttered and responsive.

Of course, these are just a few of TopStyle's HTML/XHTML tools. A more thorough feature list can be found in the release notes:

TopStyle Pro 3.0 release notes
TopStyle Pro 3.10 release notes
If you haven't tried TopStyle for HTML editing, do yourself a favor and download a trial version. You won't be sorry :)

PS: Be sure to check out the Flash demos which show off TopStyle's integrated HTML/CSS editing and validation.

NewsGator Acquires FeedDemon,
TopStyle...and Me!

NewsGator Acquires FeedDemon,
TopStyle...and Me!
06/05/2005 11:08 PM

Yes, it's true: NewsGator has acquired FeedDemon and TopStyle, and brought me on board in the process.

Wow! How did this happen?

As regular visitors to my support forums know, the biggest request - by far - that FeedDemon customers have had is the ability to synchronize their subscriptions between multiple computers. They use FeedDemon on one PC at home, on another at the office, on a laptop while traveling, etc., and they want their feeds to be synched between them.

If someone reads an item on one computer, it shouldn't show up as unread on another computer. And when they subscribe to a feed, it should automatically appear on any computer they use. Basically, provide the convenience of a web-based aggregator with the power and speed of a Windows desktop application.

I toyed with various hack-ish ways to do this, and even considered creating my own web-based sync service, but in the end came to the conclusion that to really do this right, I needed to join forces with someone who already had the server-side piece in place.

Why NewsGator? I thought they were just an Outlook plug-in?

I used to think that, too. But shortly after I decided I needed to join forces with someone, I read this post in NewsGator founder Greg Reinacker's blog, in which he laid out NewsGator's plans. This post really opened my eyes to where they were headed - let's just say, I was impressed.

Funny enough, soon afterwards I got an email from Greg asking whether I'd consider joining forces with NewsGator. Truth is, if I hadn't already read Greg's blog post and been so impressed with the direction NewsGator was headed, chances are I would've turned him down - but because I read that post, I flew out to meet with the folks at NewsGator (score one for transparency through blogging!).

Long story short: we agreed that I should come on board and bring FeedDemon and TopStyle with me.

So what does this mean for FeedDemon customers?

I think you're going to like this :)

NewsGator uses a subscription model, and FeedDemon will become part of their subscription plans. All existing FeedDemon customers will get a two-year business standard subscription for free - and this includes upgrades to FeedDemon. In other words, if you've already bought FeedDemon, you'll get brand new versions of FeedDemon and a subscription to NewsGator Online free for the next two years.

Are there going to be changes in FeedDemon as a result of this?

Certainly. The most obvious will be that FeedDemon will integrate very closely with NewsGator's online synchronization platform, enabling using FeedDemon on multiple computers while maintaining state between all of them. You could even use FeedDemon on your home computer, NewsGator Outlook Edition while at work, and NewsGator Mobile Edition while traveling, and still have everything synched between devices.

Beyond that, having a server-side piece offers a lot of interesting possibilities. Coupling a rich desktop client with a first-rate server-side aggregator provides the best of both worlds: you get the power of a Windows application and all the flexibility of a web-based approach. There have been a number of features I've been wanting to add to FeedDemon that required a server-side piece which I can now provide.

While these changes won't happen overnight, we've already been working hard on a new release of FeedDemon - version 1.51 - which will include much better integration than cur rently exists. You should expect to see the first beta of FeedDemon 1.51 a couple of weeks from now.

And what about TopStyle customers?

While the acquisition obviously came to pass because of FeedDemon, NewsGator has made it clear that they're committed to TopStyle as well. This was an important part of the deal for me. I use TopStyle every single day, and I personally couldn't work without it. I'm already developing TopStyle 3.12, a free upgrade for existing TopStyle customers which will be released as a NewsGator product.

Oh, and you'll get the same deal as FeedDemon customers: a free two-year subscription. For the record, TopStyle has a lot of users - even more than FeedDemon - so this is a very generous offer from the folks at NewsGator, and it illustrates their commitment to the product.

So, what about you, Nick? Are you moving? And will you still be doing support?

Although I'll be working for NewsGator (my official title is "Architect of Client Products"), I'll be staying here in Tennessee, with frequent trips to NewsGator's offices in Denver.

I'll continue to be active in the support forums - I need to, in order to understand what my customers need - but I'll be handing over the support reigns to the folks at NewsGator. In fact, NewsGator has already taken over some of the support for FeedDemon - they're the "reinforcements" I mentioned in this post last month. The mysterious "Ron" I talked about is actually NewsGator's Ronnie Gilbertson, who will no doubt be relieved that he's no longer a secret!

And to illustrate their commitment to FeedDemon and TopStyle, NewsGator has already hired Jack Brewster to help support both products. Jack starts next month, and he's been a very frequent contributor to my support forums over the years (sometimes I think he knows TopStyle and FeedDemon better than I do). Welcome aboard, Jack - glad you could join us!

Patience is a virtue :)

So, there are obviously some major changes underway here, and we've got a lot to do to integrate my site, support system, etc., with NewsGator's.

As long as this post is, I know it leaves a ton of questions unanswered, and I'll try to address them here over the next few weeks. In the meantime, I do ask for your patience while we get everything sorted out. The entire process will likely take several weeks, and it's possible there will be a few hiccups along the way.

The end result, though, will be something special. I'm excited to have this opportunity to take my software to a whole new level, and I look forward to entering this new chapter in my life.

Should the "Lite" version of TopStyle be
killed?

Should the "Lite" version of TopStyle be
killed?
06/10/2004 09:51 AM

Now that I've started working on TopStyle Pro 3.11, one of the big questions I'm asking myself is whether to continue TopStyle Lite. If you're not familiar with TopStyle Lite, it's an extremely scaled down version of TopStyle Pro (it's basically Notepad for CSS) that I give away for free.

There are several reasons for my considering this, but here are the primary ones:

  • TopStyle Lite was originally created for inclusion in HomeSite 4.5, thanks to a deal I had with Allaire. Basically, HomeSite customers benefited from improved CSS features, Allaire benefited from not having to code their own CSS tool, and I benefited from the obvious exposure. However, since that time Allaire has been purchased by Macromedia, and HomeSite's future has been up in the air ever since. At this point, I get little benefit from having the Lite version bundled with HomeSite.
  • I had similar deals with other HTML editors, but most of them no longer exist.
  • Now that TopStyle Pro is a full-blown HTML editor, there's little need for integration with third-party HTML editors anyway.
  • Despite the fact the TopStyle Lite displays a great big message about the Pro version, I'm constantly hearing from people who think TopStyle Lite is TopStyle (I see similar messages in newsgroups, too).
  • It's obvious from support questions that the vast majority of those who use TopStyle Lite will never purchase the Pro version.

I realize many people won't wish TopStyle Lite to disappear, but from a business standpoint it's not making much sense anymore. Comments?

Conflict between TopStyle and Microsoft
Fingerprint Reader
02/05/2005 09:08 PM

I've recently had a few reports of TopStyle generating an "access violation" error when it closes, and it looks like the problem is due to some sort of conflict with the software for Microsoft's new Fingerprint Reader.

If you're using a fingerprint reader and are experiencing this problem, rest assured that the error message is harmless - you can simply click OK to dismiss it. However, I do understand that it's annoying since it apparently happens every time you close TopStyle, so it is something that needs to be resolved. I've ordered a fingerprint reader so I can reproduce and hopefully fix the problem.

Update: Conflict between TopStyle and

03/14/2005 06:24 PM

Earlier this month I posted about a confl ict between Microsoft's Fingerprint reader and TopStyle which caused a harmless (but annoying) error message to appear every time TopStyle was closed.

Since my initial post, I've installed a Fingerprint Reader (cool toy, btw) and have been able to reproduce the problem. More importantly, I've located the line of code where the error occurs. Although I'm stumped as to why the Fingerprint Reader software is causing the problem, I do have a fix in place that appears to be working. I plan to keep running TopStyle with this fix for a few weeks to make sure it's reliable, and if all goes well I'll make it available to everyone who is experiencing the problem.

Banner design contest for graphic
artists: Win a copy of FeedDemon and

01/22/2004 02:40 AM

FeedDemon logoDespite the fact that I used to be cartoonist, my graphic design skills are...well, limited. And while I'm a fast coder, it takes me hours to create even the simplest images - the banners and buttons I made for TopStyle felt like they took more time to create than TopStyle itsef.

Well, I now find myself needing banners for FeedDemon, and I'm trying desperately to avoid creating them myself. So, here's a chance for graphic designers to show off their talent and win a copy of both FeedDemon and TopStyle in the process. Here's what I need:

Two 468x60 FeedDemon ad banners
One 135x100 FeedDemon ad banner
One 120x60 FeedDemon ad banner

All images should be 256 color GIFs, and while animation is fine it shouldn't be overbearing. For branding purposes, each image should use some variation of the FeedDemon logo, which appears at the right of this entry. The contest starts now and ends January 31, 2004.

Just send your creations to me at info at bradsoft.com. The four winning designs will be showcased here soon after the contest ends.
