Los Alamos halts operations; Classified
data disks lost at Sandia and Los Alamos
07/17/2004 01:24 AM
Two breaking news items today that relate to security -- or a frightening lack thereof -- at US government-run nuclear labs Sandia and Los Alamos. First, an item from my Wired News colleague Noah Shachtman, on Defensetech blog:
Los Alamos National Laboratory director Pete Nanos shut down the country's leading nuclear weapons lab on Friday, after a set of classified computer disks disappeared, and a student was hit in the eye with a powerful laser beam -- all in the space of a week.

"As of today, Director Nanos has suspended all Operations at the Laboratory," an internal e-mail obtained by Wired News read. "This is a very serious step."

"This willful flouting of the rules must stop, and I don't care how many people I have to fire to make it stop. If you think the rules are silly, if you think compliance is a joke, please resign now and save me the trouble," Nanos added in a separate e-mail to Los Alamos employees.

And separately today, this press release was issued by Sandia National Laboratories:
Sandia National Laboratories has located a floppy disk that had turned up missing in a recent inventory. The floppy disk, which had been marked classified, was found about 1 p.m. today (Friday). Sandia had reported the disk as missing June 30 in a wall-to-wall inventory. (...)

Sandia Corporation President and Laboratories Director C. Paul Robinson said: "We are relieved the disk has been found. But in my mind, the nature of the near miss of this recent incident is far too close for comfort. We must find better ways and procedures for ensuring the protection of such material."

Energy Dreams and Energy Realities

Energy Dreams and Energy Realities 06/19/2004 03:13 PM
Interesting dissection of US energy/environmental politics and policy along conservative/liberal lines: "We are, it seems, always in some kind of energy crisis, real or imagined. Some worry that our major sources of energy are about to run out. Some despair that our energy-hungry civilization is destroying the natural world. Some believe our quest for energy is driving us into unnecessary wars and unsavory alliances. And some lament that excessive regulations on energy development are crippling the American way of life. When it comes to energy politics, there is no shortage of alarmism, conservative and liberal alike." The conclusion was sorta weak tho, I thought :D [via J. Orlin Grabbe - NSFW!]

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM

ifd-iv.jpg imageFor embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.
Read - Flash memory ATA hard drive [TechJapan]

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for hackers on a budget (after the jump.)

Who Made Your Blank Discs?

Who Made Your Blank Discs? 03/19/2005 02:22 AM

You may think that you know what manufacturer made you blank CD or DVD discs, it was  Fujifilm, TDK Electronics, Ritek, Verbatim, Imation, Hewlett-Packard or another recognizable brand. You would be wrong.  In fact, most of this blank media is manufactured by a short list of companies: India's Moser Baer, Japan's Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden, and Taiwan's CMC Magnetics, Prodisc Technology and Optodisc Technology. The major name brands that actually create their own CD’s are Sony and Philips.

Of the manufacturers that actually make the media, Taiyo Yuden is the one recognized as the best, with the highest quality product. Trying to figure out who makes your media is not easy. The best website for talking about the brands and the media and what are some great deals for media online is Digitalfaq.com.

Here is more from the article on WiredSome media can burn reliably faster than its rated speed. A DVD+R might be rated at 4X burn speed, yet with certain recorders, it can be burned at 8X. The factors that contribute to high- or low-quality media are varied. Several choices are on the market, and which one is used can affect a disc's reflectivity, and thus its readability. But beyond that, says Pieper, "if your dye is unevenly spread, or the other materials and workmanship are shoddy, it doesn't matter what dye is used." Also, Pieper says if the glue job on the platter is sloppy, "the media literally falls apart."  Taiyo Yuden media stands as the golden child for blank-media enthusiasts. Popular opinion swings the other way for manufacturers such as CMC Magnetics and Princo.

If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next?

If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next? 03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Wired Magazine is now suggesting that discs are dead as a storage medium. With all the battling going on over the next generation of DVD technology, Wired's products editor, Robert Capps, notes that not very many people seem to care about the new "high definition" audio CDs that have come out. Instead, everyone's focused on getting an iPod and digitizing their music. While video is definitely more difficult to transport via the internet, the argument is that the technology is improving for compressing and transmitting larger files. Of course, it might be interesting to put Capps in a debate with Mark Cuban -- who also thinks that discs are dead, but that portable hard drives or flash drives will take their place. Cuban's argument is that "storage is expanding far more quickly than upload or download speeds to our homes," so it's going to be more efficient to move around hard drives than bits of high definition content. With some already experimenting with offer ing content on iPods, it is beginning to look like this battle for the next plastic disc technology may be a waste of time. Update: Then again, some analysts think discs will be big business for the next five years. Of course, analysts always seem to be overly positive in their predictions -- it's what helps sell reports.

Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs?

Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs? 12/15/2003 03:16 PM
Microsoft's career page contains a very interesting job advertisement. The ad says that the Xbox Team "is looking for a strong PM/Engineer to manage the design and development of the Xbox Game Disc for the next generation Xbox console." Moreover, the ad stresses the importance of anti-piracy technology in the development of the new discs for the next generation console. Although it is possible that MS will simply try to incorporate sophisticated anti-piracy features in the now standard DVD medium, it is probably easier for them to develop a proprietary format. Nintendo did it with their GameCube discs, and they were quite effective in combating piracy -- so why not Microsoft?
