Findory: Collaborative news aggregator 01/19/2004 11:47 AM
Greg Linden stumbled across "The Daily Me? No, the Daily Us," an old Wired piece of mine that pointed to a disadvantage of personalized news sites: they don't build communities the way paper newspapers do. (Look, it was an interesting idea in 1995.) Here's an excerpt, chosen because of its quaint reference to that other Iraqi war: The fact that the document I'm looking at is the same for all who receive it has other important effects. It establishes a baseline of expectations about what we, as a community, are all supposed to know. If, at the height of the...

Aggregator inside aggregator

Aggregator inside aggregator 09/21/2004 10:57 PM
You know whenever people post screenshots of emulators, how it can be weird to see Windows running on a Mac? (Even weirder if you actually use an emulator, until you get used to it.)

Here’s a similar side effect of having embedded a browser in NetNewsWire. (Click for full-size screen shots.)

Bloglines running inside
NetNewsWire's browserRadio UserLand. running inside
NetNewsWire's browser

Even though it’s odd, there’s actually a point to it—we discovered that some people use multiple aggregators. One for fun stuff and one for work, that kind of thing.

If one is browser-based and the other embeds a browser, then, well, hey, you’ve got something like the above.

to take on ... Apple?

Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs was asked during a November meeting with analysts whether the company would ever make its iPod music player work directly with something other than its iTunes Music Store. There was a noticeable sense of accomplishment in his voice when he answered. First he pointed out the dominant market position achieved by the iPod. Then he noted that the iTunes store had just captured more than 80 percent of the market for legally downloaded music.

Microsoft Plans More IM Options

Microsoft Plans More IM Options 08/03/2004 12:46 PM
Microsoft is developing a new version of its MSN Messenger that will allow users to fully customize their IM experience. This MSN Messenger upgrade won't come till sometime in mid-2005. Microsoft will also be working on integrating new services which might involve fees, subscriptions, or other forms of payments. Personally if I had to pay to get a feature that I felt should have already been there I'd be pissed off. If it's a one time fee I would probably go along with that, but not a subscription based fee.

Microsoft plans to deliver a new version of its popular MSN Messenger client by mid-2005 that will let users create a more customized instant messaging experience, the company says. Aside from the user experience, MSN Messenger also has to bring in more money, Microsoft representatives say. The company has not really tapped the online advertising opportunities in the client, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft's MSN Information Services & Merchant Platform division. He addressed the topic at a meeting last week with financial analysts at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

To that goal, some of those new services might involve fees, subscriptions, and other user costs, Mehdi said. For example, the company charges a monthly fee for access to a game IM users can play with their MSN contacts. Microsoft introduced gaming recently in the U.S. and will roll it out internationally in the coming months, according to a Microsoft spokesperson.

Changing from a Linux to a Windows operating system meant that the time taken for a transaction was reduced from three-four hours to 10-15 minutes. Sounds like a line from a commercial? Well, that’s what Hitendra Patil, vice-president, business development and operations, Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL), says and you just might find it in very soon in commericals that Microsoft is planning to launch.
