developers build robust and reliable applications by providing a
powerful database that is also free and easy to use. Too often
database systems are overly complex for building simple applications.
SQL Server Express and the other Express products reduce this
complexity by providing a simple but powerful development environment
for building data-driven applications. You can design schemas, add
data, and query local databases, all inside the Visual Studio 2005
environment. If you need more advanced database features, then SQL
Server Express can be seamlessly upgraded to more sophisticated
versions of SQL Server.

Managing a Music Collection Using Visual
Basic Express and SQL Server Express
07/08/2004 11:46 PMA problem that afflicts me (and I've noticed many of my brethren) is
the need to create a program to solve a task when there are already
many perfectly suitable programs on the market for free or for very
little cash. The standard justification in my mind is that there isn't
a program that does things the exact way I want them to. Now
realistically, I tend to pick on programs that are within reach. After
all, even if Word didn't suit my needs, I have no intention of writing
my own word processing program from scratch. (Although at times, I
keep thinking I could build a better version of Outlook ... yet I
digress).

What's New in FOR XML in Microsoft SQL
Server 2005
06/21/2004 11:23 PMThis first in a series of articles by Michael Rys details the major
new capabilities of the server-side FOR XML clause in the next version
of SQL Server. These enable you to further enhance the XML support in
your applications and to write easy-to-maintain relational data-to-XML
aggregations.
XML Best Practices for Microsoft SQL
Server 2005
XML Best Practices for Microsoft SQL
Server 2005
08/03/2004 12:31 AMMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 provides extensive support for XML data
processing. XML values can be stored natively in an XML data type
column, which can be typed according to a collection of XML schemas,
or left untyped. You can index the XML column. Furthermore,
fine-grained data manipulation is supported using XQuery and XML DML,
the latter being an extension for data modification.
SQL Server 2000 and SQLXML Web Releases provide powerful XML data
management capabilities. These features focus on mapping between
relational and XML data. XML views of relational data can be defined
using annotated XSD (AXSD) to provide an XML-centric approach that
supports the bulkload of data, query, and update capabilities on XML
data. Transact-SQL extensions provide a SQL-centric approach for
mapping relational query results to XML (using FOR XML), and
generating relational views from XML (using OpenXML). These supports
have been extended in SQL Server 2005. Together with the newly added
native XML support, SQL Server 2005 provides a powerful platform for
developing rich applications for semi-structured and unstructured data
management.
