Nextel settles class action lawsuit
12/02/2003 01:29 PMGiving perhaps a small glimmer of hope to all those frustrated by the
monthly number portability fees being imposed by the cellphone
companies, Nextel has just settled a class action lawsuit brought
against it by its customers. The complaint was that Nextel's
collecting of fees under the name of "Federal Programs Cost Recovery"
was misleading because it implied that the fees had been mandated by
the Federal government. The fees were perfectly legal for them to
collect (and they're actually still collecting them), but Nextel is
giving their subscribers some free minutes for their trouble. Read

Here Come Class Action Lawsuits Against
Wireless Carriers
05/18/2004 04:34 AMAdmittedly, wireless carriers are notorious for their poor service.
However, with the advent of number portability, one would hope that a
little competition should help to solve many of those problems.
However, why wait for the market when you can sue? It looks like some
groups are trying to come up with just about any excuse to
file a class action lawsuit against mobile phone
service providers. Now, I'm no fan of most of the wireless
carriers - who I think have done a terrible job providing service to
their customers and who are often misleading and downright sneaky in
what they do. However, I also don't think bogus class action lawsuits
help the situation much either.

Cell phone class-action lawsuits
reinstated
03/19/2005 03:27 AMA federal appeals court has reinstated five lawsuits claiming that the
cell phone industry has failed to protect consumers from unsafe levels
of radiation.
The class-action lawsuits seek punitive damages and want cell phone
manufacturers to provide headsets, which they say could reduce risks
of brain tumors, according to the Associated Press.
The lawsuits originally were filed in separate state courts but were
consolidated and transferred to federal court. The claims require the
courts to explore the adequacy of the Federal Communications
Commission's radiation emission standards, one ruling judge declared.
