As if the largest software company in the world as an opponent was not enough, the Linux and open source software industry is facing some of its biggest challenges in containing the proliferation of its own licenses and updating a 15-year-old GPL. Both hurdles were roundly discussed during sessions at the recent OSDL Enterprise Linux Summit, but there appeared to be no easy answers nor easy solutions to either licensing issue.

Microsoft, Open Source and National
Security

Microsoft, Open Source and National
Security
04/23/2004 01:24 AM
Two weeks ago, I wondered out loud about the top 10 worst IT business decisions ever made and nominated HP's decision to follow DEC down the road to oblivion for top spot. Today I'd like to suggest that the U.S. Defense Department's continued use of Microsoft's software is likely to top a future list of this kind. The equation here is simple. First, recognize that Microsoft's software security depends crucially on keeping its source code secret. That's not a comment from an anti-Microsoft bigot -- it's the testimony given under oath by Microsoft vice president Jim Allchin. Even limited release of Microsoft's code, Allchin told judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's federal court in May 2002, would threaten national security because the code is both seriously flawed and widely used in the Defense Department. But consider that only nine months later, in February 2003, Microsoft announced an agreement giving communist China full access to the source code for Windows and related tools.

Speedy Sheets

Speedy Sheets 05/12/2004 04:03 PM
This is a n ice little hint from Mac OS X Hints — you know those little sheets that slide out from document windows when you save or print? They appear in Cocoa apps like TextEdit, Mail, iPhoto etc. You can speed things up by changing the defaults setting with this command : defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSWindowResizeTime .001 Now, instead of waiting for the window to slide out, it instantly appears and disappears, letting you get on. Eye candy is nice, but sometimes you just wanna get stuff done quickly and easily.

Would You Pay $4 A Month To Get Rid Of A
Few Sheets Of Paper?
01/06/2005 06:52 AM
Why is it that business folks seem to close off their minds to reality when it comes to pricing in the mobile world? There's a big effort going on to make people pay for every bit of content they get on a mobile phone. The carriers are trying to keep the networks closed so that it's possible to do this, but they're forgetting one huge thing: most users aren't stupid. Most users realize that there's this thing called the internet, and they're used to being able to get content on it for free. While it may not always be as convenient as content on a mobile phone, if the cost of the content on the phone drastically outweighs the inconvenience, you can bet that they'll skip the fee-based solution and just stick with what they've got. Thus, the only response in hearing that Mapquest thinks you'll pay $4 a month to stop printing out copies of your maps and directions and just get them on the phone instead, is to laugh. Especially as mobile browsers on phones become more popular and (oh no!) people can just access that good old internet on their phones and get Mapquest for free.

Cascading Style Sheets

Cascading Style Sheets 06/23/2004 02:40 AM

It has been a significant amount of time since I have designed any websites and being I have nothing but time on my hands I decided to teach myself how to use CSS in my new website designs. I have always relied on Hotmetal Pro and the last version that Softquad put out before being taken over by Corel was version 6. This version has a real straight forward CSS editor but the editor is 2-3 years old.

I am in the market for a new CSS editor and HTML editor. Those of you that are up to speed in the design world I am open for suggestions. I am only going to be building a handful of personal sites so I don't want to spend thousands of dollars for new software tools. Suggestions Please.
