RealNetworks Harmonizes with iPod

RealNetworks Harmonizes with iPod 07/27/2004 02:29 AM

Monday RealNetworks announced their Harmony technology, which allows purchased music to be played on many digital music players, including the iPod. The technology supports translating between Apple FairPlay, Windows Media and RealNetworks' DRM systems. With Harmony, the RealPlayer Music Store supports over 70 devices. A beta version of RealPlayer 10.5 with Harmony can be downloaded from Real's web site.

RealNetworks Breaks Into The iPod

RealNetworks Breaks Into The iPod 07/26/2004 03:32 AM
We've been complaining for a while now about how every single online music store that opens seems to come with its own format and its own DRM to make the music mostly useless for anyone who wants to actually listen to it. It looks like RealNetworks is looking to solve that issue by reverse engineering their way around any obstacles. The latest move is to figure out a way to reverse engineer (they claim it's not actually reverse engineering, but that will likely be for the courts to sort out) Apple's FairPlay technology, which Apple refuses to license. The question that everyone has now, is how long it will take Apple to sue RealNetworks for daring to make their iPods even more useful without first paying Apple.

"Compatibility is key to bringing digital music to the masses," said Rob Glaser, founder and CEO, RealNetworks, Inc. "Before Harmony, consumers buying digital music got locked into a specific kind of portable player. Harmony changes all that. Thanks to Harmony, consumers don’t have to worry about technology when buying music. Now anyone can buy music, move it to their favorite portable device, and it will just work, just like the way DVD and CDs work."

RealNetworks Returns Fire in iPod
Dispute

RealNetworks Returns Fire in iPod
Dispute
07/30/2004 03:56 PM
With the battle fully joined, RealNetworks defended its Harmony digital music software against accusations from Apple that the technology was "hacked" from the iPod's DRM (digital rights management) application.

"Harmony follows in a well-established tradition of fully legal, independently developed paths to achieve compatibility," RealNetworks says in a statement. The digital media specialist compares the situation with Apple to the creation of IBM-compatible PCs from Compaq.

Harmony translation software provides a way to transfer tunes from RealNetworks' music store to the iPod, as well as to an array of other devices, RealNetworks contends. "Harmony technology does not remove or disable any digital-rights management system. Apple has suggested that new laws, such as the DMCA, are relevant to this dispute. In fact, the DMCA is not designed to prevent the creation of new methods of locking content and explicitly allows the creation of interoperable software," the company says.

RealNetworks Struggles to Succeed

RealNetworks Struggles to Succeed 08/19/2004 01:53 AM
As covered here not once, not twice, but three times, RealNetworks just won't give up in its goal to do....what ever they're doing. In short, RealNetworks wants iPods to play their format and Apple doesn't. In response, RealNetworks created a hack for the iPod. The war has begun. Now, RealNetworks has their own "anti-Apple" site. But that's not the half of it, MacMinute has coverage on the latest juicy events. It turns out that RealNetworks issued a petition to ask Apple to allow their hack, but it was filled with anti-RealNetworks comments. In response, RealNetworks created a new petition that did not allow comments. Similarly, RealNetworks has turned off comments at their "anti-Apple" site (how can this site be "an invitation for your dialogue and thoughts" without comments?).

What really bothers me is that RealNetworks claims that Apple has "land-locked" the iPod to the iTMS and the AAC format, but that simply isn't true. The iPod can support AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, and Apple Lossless. Take your pick.
