Commentary: Is Outsourcing On The Outs?
(BusinessWeek Online)
09/24/2004 04:12 PMBusinessWeek Online - The announcement sent ripples of anxiety through
the tech world. On Sept. 15, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. said that it
was terminating a seven-year, $5 billion technology-outsourcing
deal with IBM. For many, it's an article of faith that corporations
will gradually hand off ever more of their technology operations to
big service providers such as IBM, Accenture , and Electronic Data
Systems . Yet here was the nation's second-largest bank taking its
tech back because it was strategically too important to be left to an
outsider. ...

Early adoption, and Airport Express
cut-outs
Early adoption, and Airport Express
cut-outs
08/03/2004 12:39 AMI don't know quite how I did it, but in the past 48 hours
I've become an Apple early adopter. I spent the weekend in Minnesota,
where a visit to the Mall of America (aka Unholy Temple to
Consumerism) resulted in a visit to the Apple store, and
a visit to the Apple store resulted in a shiny new fourth generation
20 GB iPod. Of course, the seven and a half hour journey back south
would go so much faster with an iTrip to
play with, so I picked one of those up as well.
The Apple store also provided me with the most intensely
Apple moment of my life, when I overheard a store employee in a blue
t-shirt, with blue hair, holding a blue mini iPod, telling a customer:
"Oh, and of course there's the 'cool' factor".
The iPod is a lot of fun, especially now that I've enabled
it as a hard drive (through an option hidden in iTunes for some
reason) and started messing around with it at the command line. Here's
an iPod tip: if you want to access the music files stored on the
device, open up a terminal and cd to
/Volumes/iPod/iPod_Control/Music. The Finder won't
display the files (presumably as a nod to the music industry's legal
eagles) but you can still get at them using good old fashioned Unix
commands. The next step is to set up some kind of automated backup
script for all my other important files.
Another iPod trick for the thrifty: if 20+ dollars seems
too much for a case, a sock makes an excellent low budget
alternative.
Gadget number two was ordered nearly a month ago, but
arrived this morning: an Airport Express. If
Gartner th
ought that the iPod was a corporate security risk they're going to
have a field day with this thing: it's the size of a power brick, and
setting up wireless access to a network is as easy as plugging in an
ethernet cable and hooking it up to a power socket. It's an instant
network hole in the palm of your hand.
Mine's now doing service as a wireless speaker cable (to a
set of JBL
Creature Speakers), and have actually just started randomly
cutting out. Here's hoping it's just a temporary glitch. I'm also
crossing my fingers for Apple to release a software update that lets
me channel all of the sound output from my laptop through the Airport
Express, rather than just music from iTunes.
Actually, the random cut outs are getting really
irritating now. Any other early adopters experienced this problem?

Rural Areas and the Internet
Rural Areas and the Internet
02/19/2004 06:14 AMRural Areas and the Internethttp://ww
w.pewinternet.org/reports/toc.asp?Report=112There has
been steady penetration of the Internet into rural areas in recent
years and more than half of rural
adults -- 52% -- now go online.
However, a corresponding rise in the percentage of urban and suburban
residents going online has left a persistent gap between rural areas
and the rest of the country. Some 67% of urban residents and 66% of
suburbanites are online. A new study by the
Pew Internet & American Life
Project finds that the gap is probably tied to the fact that rural
residents as a group earn less and are older than their urban and
suburban counterparts.
Rural internet options
Rural internet options
06/05/2005 11:47 PMThere's a possibility that I'm going to be spending some time in a
rural area with no DSL or cable over the next few months and I need
high speed internet access to work on kottke.org while I'm there. I've
investigated various options, but there are so many pros, cons, and
unknown factors to weigh that it's hard make a choice. Here's the
list:
- Dialup - Cheap, but way too slow. Not really an option.
- Two-way satellite internet - I've heard bad things about this, but
it's been available for awhile now so I'd guess it's not completely
useless. The latency sucks, but there's no way to get around it and
I'm not a gamer so how bad can it be? Do I go with Direcway or Starband or GroundControl or are there
other companies? I've heard stories that some services throttle
bandwidth or charge per GB. Also kind of expensive. Gotta sign
year+-long contracts. Does it work in bad weather?
- Phone company says that we're out of range for DSL, but get the
DSL modem anyway and see if it works. As suggested here. Anyone
done this?
- Get the phone company to drop a DSL-ready line from the trunk to
the house. This is probably expensive (how much?) and would take time
to convince the phone company to do.
- T1 line. Expensive. $600/mo? Probably more.
- Wifi antenna pointed towards a wireless access point somewhere in
DSL land. Downsides: don't know anyone in surrounding DSL land,
possible line-of-sight issues.
- Run cable coax from nearest cable subscriber's house several miles
away. Absurd. Included only for the sake of completeness.
Does anyone have any personal experience with any of this? Any
recommendations or helpful pointers? Satellite internet seems like the
best option, but looking around at the available services, it seems
expensive and just generally like the service they offer is kind of
"my way or the highway" and generally makes me uneasy and unclean.
Many thanks in advance for anything you can offer.
