Motorola to Intro Wi-Fi/Cell Phone
Motorola to Intro Wi-Fi/Cell Phone
07/27/2004 12:37 PMMotorola, Avaya, and Proxim, today introduced an enterprise platform
that enables voice roaming between enterprise WLANs and the wide area
cellular networks: The solution includes a new handset from Motorola
that looks like a typical cellular flip phone but can support voice
over WLAN as well as voice over a GSM network. As part of the
solution, enterprises must implement APs built by Proxim and Avaya, a
call manager gateway from Motorola that enables the handoff between
the networks, and an Avaya IP-PBX. The phone automatically reverts to
the WLAN when it's available and can seamlessly hand off calls from
the WLAN to a GSM network as a user moves between them. While it looks
like a cell phone, it features a lot of the capabilities of a desk
phone such as buttons for mute, hold, and speakerphone. It runs Win CE
so can support Microsoft .Net applications and it includes a VPN. The
gateway enables push-to-talk while users are covered by the WLAN. The
platform offers some features that aren't available on the PDA
introduced yesterday by HP and T-Mobile, namely voice over WLAN. "It's
exciting to see the HP/T-Mobile solution, but it's an iPaq that has
GSM voice on it," said Chris White, director of business development
for enterprise seamless mobility with Motorola. "It doesn't do VOIP
except with a softphone." In addition, because of that WLAN voice
capability, the Motorola solution supports a single phone number that
rings for users regardless of the network they are connected to. Users
can also use a single mailbox and access many of the same PBX-type
features both inside the office over the WLAN and outside on a GSM
network. One obvious capability this phone seems to lack compared to
the HP/T-Mobile handheld is GPRS. That means that users won't have any
higher speed data access outside of the office. Sales, which will be
handled at least initially by Avaya and not a cell phone operator,
might be challenging because the decision to implement such a solution
is complicated. An enterprise would have to decide to potentially
switch existing cell phone users in the company to whichever GSM
operators may support the phone--the companies haven't said which may
support it. It also presumably means that a company might grapple with
feeling the need to sign up additional cellular users in an effort to
standardize on the phone. The decision also may...

this year. Details on the phone itself are still unclear but it is
believed that it syncs with a computer and the iTunes Music Store like
an iPod does, and incorporates the iPod interface for navigating and
playing digital music.

Motorola E725 Music Phone
Motorola E725 Music Phone
03/24/2005 11:22 AM
So
it wasn't the iTunes phone, but
the Motorola E725 still looks dandy, with an EV-DO connection, a
MiniSD slot for up to 1GB of storage, a built-in FM transmitter for
broadcasting your music to your car or home stereo, as well as a
normally-sized 3.5mm miniJack connector for use with standard
headphones. Presuming they got the interface right, it looks like a
winner. Of course, you won't be able to get your hands on one for a
while—likely the end of this year, on Verizon or Sprint.
If this is how Motorola makes a vanilla music phone, how are they
going to impress with an iTunes model?

Motorola adds Wi-Fi to 3G phone for NTT
DoCoMo
06/22/2005 02:57 AMNTT DoCoMo will begin selling a mobile phone combining Wi-Fi and 3G
(third-generation) functions on July 1, according to the phone's
manufacturer, Motorola Inc.

Outwardly, the phone resembles another Motorola 3G phone, the
A1000, and like its sibling can connect to WCDMA (Wideband Code
Division Multiple Access) 3G networks and older, slower GSM (Global
System for Mobile Communications) and GPRS (General Packet Radio
Service) networks. However, the M1000 can also connect to wireless
LANs based on the Wi-Fi or IEEE 802.11b standard.
Like the A1000, the M1000 has a touch-sensitive, 2.9-inch TFT LCD
(thin-film transistor liquid crystal display) with a resolution of 208
pixels by 320 pixels in up to 65,536 colors, a 1.2 megapixel still
camera and a 300,000 pixel video camera, according to details supplied
by a Motorola spokeswoman.
The M1000's battery contains enough energy for 80 minutes of
videoconferencing over a 3G network, 280 minutes just talking over a
GSM connection, or 200 hours on standby, according to Motorola
figures.
In addition to its Wi-Fi connection, the phone can also hook up to
computers over Bluetooth 1.1 short-range radio or a USB 2.0 (Universal
Serial Bus) cable.
The phone runs the Symbian operating system, and contains the Opera
7.5 browser; an e-mail client compatible with POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP
servers; the movianVPN 4.0 IPsec VPN (virtual private network) client;
and document viewers for e-mail attachments in formats including PDF,
JPEG, PNG, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint or
Zip. It can also run Java applets compatible with the MIDP 2.0 (Mobile
Information Device Profile) specification.
The phone will ship with a 32MB memory card in the tiny TransFlash
format, launched by Motorola and Sandisk last year.
Although the M1000 will work anywhere with a GSM or a GPRS network,
it will initially only be sold in Japan and there are no plans yet to
launch the device elsewhere, according to Motorola spokeswoman Naomi
Kondo.
"Japan is where consumers expect high-end handsets," she said.
The handset's price will be set by NTT DoCoMo, she said.
