Selling Point
Anecdotally, Hotels Use Free Access as a
Selling Point
03/06/2004 01:49 AMOn a drive this last week from Los Angeles to Seattle, I noticed more
hotels advertising free high-speed Internet access than ever before: I
drove with my brother-in-law and a border collie from Los Angeles to
Seattle over 2 1/2 days, starting on "the 5" (which turns into "I-5"
north of the great central valley), cutting over to 101 along the
northern coast, and then cutting back to I-5 at Grants Pass, Oregon. I
saw several hundred billboards and the front doors of many hotels and
motels as we drove along. Unlike previous long trips I've taken in the
last couple of years, Internet is now a major bullet point for
travelers. Most of the signs that advertised Internet service noted
that it was high-speed and free, as well. Taken in the context of the
travelers who pass along the routes we took, I can see that those
services are a big necessity. In our case, our one night in a hotel in
Ukiah didn't lead us to broadband since we were traveling with a dog.
We looked into one chain, but they only had smoking rooms. We stayed
at an inexpensive Super 8 that had free local and toll-free calls. My
ISP had a Ukiah number, astoundingly, and thus I paid nothing for
access in any case....

Flaky Internet Access at Hotels -> Tech
Winter Will Continue
07/23/2004 06:14 PMI'm currently at the Loews Le Concorde hotel in Quebec City, a
424-room business hotel recommended by some guys at the airport.
Nearly every aspect of the hotel operation reflects enormous
management attention to detail. Yet when it comes to Internet
access they've outsourced it to a company called DataValet, "a
trademark of TravelNet Technologies." These guys try to hit you
up for $20/day for a 100Kbps link but when I tried to connect their
authentication server was dead. So I had to call the 800-number
to talk to a clueless tech support guy. After about 30 minutes
of flailing about I was finally able to connect. Curious to see
how the management, which would not tolerate a burned-out light bulb
or a rubbed-off number on an elevator button, was able to tolerate
this kind of incompetence, I called the manager. Although a very
nice and competent executive, she was undisturbed by the fact that it
was so painful to connect to the Internet at her hotel. She had
even stayed at Hilton Garden Inns where Internet is free and therefore
reliable (you just plug in and because they don't try to charge anyone
they can use $50 routers; it is also about 15X the speed of
"DataValet"). But as far as she was concerned it was something
that they'd outsourced to a contractor and if it wasn't working it
wouldn't reflect badly on her management.
I would submit that Internet is the only thing that she would have
tolerated sucking in her hotel. If she'd outsourced room service
and the contractor told customers to call tech support and then
walk down to the McDonald's next door, she would change
contractors. If the telephones in the rooms were flaky she would
put in new lines, instruments, and switches.
Just as Web sites are an area where companies feel that they can
lag leagues behind their competitors (who even bothers to try to do as
good as job as Google?), Internet access seems to be one where an
enterprise will cheerfully tolerate being 60X worse that its
competition in terms of time to connect and then 15X worse in terms of
bandwidth. I infer from this experience that tech companies are
in for another few very bad years in which customers won't want to pay
attention to or invest in improved computer hardware and software.

01/24/2004 02:49 PMThe news that every Best Western hotels in the US will have free
wireless is great to hear. I don't know if they're doing this
based on market research, but personally I will be staying at their
hotels as much as possible when I travel now. I searched and searched
for Southern California hotels that had free wireless and after giving
up on a few places that claimed to but didn't, I accidentally found a
Holiday Inn in Orange County with multiple default Linksys base
stations in the hotel. I've ended up staying there the last four times
I went down to see my family, even though it's a pretty shabby hotel
and probably overpriced (it's around $70-80 a night).
It's good to see Best Western recognize this, it's not like I want
to just camp out online when I travel, but it's nice to catch up with
work and personal email when you get to the hotel at night without
having to hassle with dialups and outbound call charges. Knowing that
every single Best Western will be equipped will make searching for a
simple cheap place to sleep much easier in the future.
Hotels That Spy On You When You're In
The Room
Hotels That Spy On You When You're In
The Room
06/08/2004 02:05 PMThere was an urban legend story that made the rounds a few months ago
about how those hotel room keycards contained private info about you
on the magnetic strip. This was quickly debunked, but that doesn't
mean there aren't other privacy questions involved with staying in a
hotel room. While this NY Times article starts off with that urban
myth, it then follows it up with stories about how
certain hotels do
track when you enter or leave a room. It's not entirely clearly
how they know when you've left the room (since you don't use the key
when you leave, and it's unlikely - at this point - that they're using
RFID chips on the cards to check where you are) but it does raise some
privacy issues. Should the hotels you stay in be able to track you so
closely? What's to stop them from adding that RFID chip as well? In
the past we've written about practical reasons for having such info,
such as
keeping
the heat off when no one is in the room, but adjust it when people
are checking in. However, the privacy concerns of being tracked
everywhere you go in a hotel could become a concern for many travelers
who aren't comfortable with the idea.
Hotels good place to try..
Hotels good place to try..
04/17/2004 08:41 AMI have found in my travels that if you are looking for easy targets of
wireless access, try driving through a few hotel parking lots. There
are many now that offer wireless access and even if they don't to the
people staying there, the offices are usally wireless. Hilton Hotels
are all supposed to offer high speed wireless by the end of the year.
Some are hard wired, some wireless. Another advantage to this type
of target is that sitting in a hotel parking lot usally will not
attract to much attention depending on where you park. :) Another
site of frequent connect is local colleges and Universities. There are
a lot going wireless and giving free acess to the students, now you
really won't look out of place sitting there on the grass, enjoying
your free access. I have found two cities in Florida that offer
free wireless access to anyone who wants it. Lakeland and Gainesville
both have public wireless access for anyone in the downtown sections.
Gainesville actually did this and calls the transmitters "wireless
downtown", original. Free to anyone. Have fun and be safe..

27,000 Hotels with Broadband by 2008,
Report Says
08/06/2004 03:02 PMIn-Stat MDR reports says 5,200 hotels today, 28,000 by 2008: A story
on the report shares the additional detail that revenue from hotel
broadband was $153 million in 2003, In-Stat MDR estimates, and will be
triple that in 2004. Of course, we're seeing a parallel trend of
hotels installing broadband and then not charging for it, building the
cost into their overall capital and operations budget to encourage
more room nights and compete with hotels that do charge for access. My
brother-in-law was just traveling in Oregon with an old friend who
needed to work each evening, but had her days free. She needed
reliable high-speed Internet service. Even though they were staying
outside of major cities, they managed to find it everywhere. I expect
that especially in places where Internet access is otherwise scarce
and phone lines don't produce good modem connections that the
competition for Internet access in hotels will be higher....
Holiday Inn Pulls Out Of Expedia,
Hotels.com
Holiday Inn Pulls Out Of Expedia,
Hotels.com
08/17/2004 03:23 PMWell, the battle is clearly on between hotels and the online travel
booking sites. Initially, hotels
complete
ly underestimated the power of online booking sites, assuming they
would just be used by discount shoppers. The hotels handed off their
lowest priced inventory to them, assuming they'd still make money from
expensive business travelers. They never expected those business
travelers to figure out how to use the web themselves. Late last
year, the hotels started fighting back,
reservi
ng the cheapest rooms for their own websites. Now,
InterContinental Hotels Group, owners of Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and
a variety of other well known hotels has decided they're
pulling their inventory from Expedia
and Hotels.com completely. While individual franchisees do have
some ability to work with whatever channels they want,
InterContinental said they're making it clear that their franchisees
need to follow this policy as part of "brand standards."
InterContinental claims the reason for pulling out of Expedia and
Hotels.com is a failure to meet the "certification" process they've
laid out, but it really just means they want more control over their
own inventory. The real question is what real impact this will have
on those hotels. How much of their sales comes via Expedia or
Hotels.com, and are those users comparison shopping on other sites as
well. Generally speaking, it seems like a backwards move to
completely cut off a popular sales channel, but if they really believe
they can do better elsewhere, then more power to them.

01/19/2004 01:59 PMPeter Lewis of Fortune went snooping with STSN's chief technology
officer and found how easy it would be to break into computers of
hotel guests: The story is a bit of a plug for STSN which touts the
strong security mechanisms on networks it builds for hotels but the
story demonstrates that hotels don't always employ the most rigid
security on their Wi-Fi networks. The moral as always is protect
yourself and make sure you know how secure your network is if you're
