Spy Copter Tickets You From The Sky

Spy Copter Tickets You From The Sky 04/11/2005 03:31 PM
Bob Dole writes "The problem with red light and speed cameras, from the police side, is that not everyone speeds or runs red lights. Plus, people figure out where the cameras are located and avoid getting tickets. To solve this dilemma, UK police have just tested a helicopter capable of issuing camera tickets from the sky. The helicopter uses Automated Plate Number Recognition (ANPR) to scan 5 plates per second. Of course, the reason police say they're deploying the technology is to catch terrorists and car thieves. UK figures, however, show that in 2004, 51,000 ANPR tickets were issued for minor violations like using a cell phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt. Having expired auto insurance earns a $378 ticket. The UK government wants every police force in the country to have at least one ground-based ANPR system, and it hopes to store all the data scanned in a centralized database." This is the same device we've spoke n about before -- though, you have to wonder if they're really going to be using helicopters to track down people who have overdue library books. It can't be particularly easy for helicopters to get themselves in a position to scan license plates.

Talking On Your Mobile Phone May Cause
Back Injuries
11/18/2003 01:53 PM
There have been all sorts of worries about damage you can do to yourself when talking on a mobile phone - from causing cancer to driving accidents to cutti ng yourself off from the world. Now, a new study suggests that if you talk on your mobile phone while walking, you may do damage to your back. Actually, the study showed that any talking and walking can put your back at risk - because our breathing patterns are designed to support our back as each foot hits the ground. However, talking while walking changes the breathing pattern and provides less support. It's bad when you're just walking and talking, but it's particularly problematic for people who walk around while using their mobile phones. So... now we can't use mobile phones while driving, and you shouldn't use mobile phones while walking. It appears that mobile phones are becoming a lot less mobile.

Mini Robo Copter Unveiled

Mini Robo Copter Unveiled 04/11/2005 08:18 AM

robocopter_1_.jpgSeiko Epson is showing off their new robo-copter—the lightest and smallest robotic helicopter to date, weighing in at just 8.9 grams. The Micro Flying Robot has four legs and actuators, as well as two rotors, to aid in balancing. Lacking Asimovesque miniature atomic power sources as we do, the copter is externally powered, but it's awfully cool nonetheless. The prototype was introduced at the International Robot Exhibition, perhaps taking some thunder away from all of the robotic unveilings at the World Expo this year.
