Thanks Philip

Thanks Philip 12/27/2003 05:22 AM

This month marks Philip Greenspun's tenth year publishing on the web. Sometime in 1995, I stumbled across http://photo.net/~philg and proceeded to learn quite a bit about web publishing, photography, storytelling on the web, and eventually how databases and collaborative community spaces are built.

There are three or four people that shaped my learning about web technology and during a time where books on the subject were rare, it was due to these folks that I got jobs doing web things and created a number of personal sites and services. They were generous enough to share everything they learned along the way and I've tried my best to pass along my lessons to others. I remember reading every word of Philip's guide to building a community site online and then buying a hardcopy when it was released. The book taught me how to view any potential site as a giant database that could be used by thousands. I used a lot of the ideas when planning out the mechanics and programming of MetaFilter and two years later I was getting accolades< /a> for the work inspired in part by this book.

I've put some effort into tracking down and personally thanking the folks that helped me out early on by publishing tutorials, but Philip was one I never got around to contacting. So thanks again Philip for all you've done and I hope to see you continue for ten years to come.

Joey DeVilla has a blog entry on a Boston blogger whose house burned down this weekend: there's a PayPal donation box to help the poor guy out.
About 5 or 10 minutes later I started smelling smoke and heard my dad looking in the attic outside my room. It was now he started screaming, "The house is REALLY on fire. Get anything you can and get out!" He said this as he walked down the stairs and when he came back in after putting something outside.

I was a bit panicked and shaken but I grabbed my backpack and threw my computers in it and put on some pants. I should have probably put on the pants with my wallet in them, but for some reason I didn't. And I should have probably got a jacket as well seeing as it is so cold now.

Students Give Out Burned CDs At Prom

Students Give Out Burned CDs At Prom 05/14/2004 09:02 PM
Some high school students organizing a prom in Wisconsin thought it would be a great idea to give out a CD to each of approximately 500 students who came to the prom - as a nice memento. They spent $1,845 to have the CD cases professionally made, but didn't think about actually paying for the songs. They just burned the CD's three songs themselves. The RIAA won't say what they're doing, but clearly they're looking into the situation. Obviously, the kids involved broke the law. It's an open and shut case of copyright infringement. However, take a step back and ask the more important questions: did the recording industry "lose" anything in doing this? First off, it's unlikely they would have allowed the students to create the CD in the first place - so it wasn't as if they lost out on the fees they would have charged. Even if they somehow were convinced to allow it, they likely would have charged an amount that would have been too costly for the students. Again, they wouldn't have lost anything because no money would have been paid. Finally, since the students did go out and put a grand total of three songs on the CD, how many "sales" can the industry claim they lost? The students didn't receive a whole CD, and it's likely that some of the students liked one, two or all three of the songs on the CD - and may have been intrigued enough by the songs to go out and purchase the CD that they came from. The law here is clear. The students were wrong. However, shouldn't we look at whether or not that makes any sense?

In many business situations, the burned CD is the best way to distribute information to a target audience. For communications involving PowerPoint presentations, HTML, PDF forms, Flash animations, or a number of other applications, the portable and durable CD has become a common delivery method. Operators May Get Burned on Flat Rate 3G

Operators May Get Burned on Flat Rate 3G 09/16/2004 01:02 PM
Researchers at Analysys say that cellular operators should resist offering flat rate pricing for 3G access: They say that such pricing schemes aim to compete with DSL or Wi-Fi services but that the end result will be heavy Internet traffic on the 3G networks. Instead, operators should focus on valuable services that can be delivered to cell phones which they can charge more money for. Cellular operators certainly didn't envision the existence of Wi-Fi when they first jumped into 3G. With plenty of hotspots available in most cities, users may decide to go the extra mile to find a hotspot rather than use an expensive 3G service, which may be why cellular operators feel compelled to at least mimic the flat-rate pricing of some Wi-Fi access plans. T-Mobile is in a particularly good position, offering both cellular and plenty of hotspots. When it recently introduced an HP iPaq that includes both Wi-Fi and cellular, it planned to introduce a flat rate fee that includes both GPRS and Wi-Fi. It's a good way for T-Mobile to hedge in the hopes that heavy data use travels over the Wi-Fi network and lighter, on-the-move access happens on the GPRS network....

MP3 interviews with Philip K Dick

MP3 interviews with Philip K Dick 06/07/2004 04:17 AM
David sez, "A friend loaned me a bunch of tapes, and one of them turned out to be an audio interview of Philip K. Dick, interviewed in his home. You can hear the television on and his kids playing in the background. Very relaxed and chatty. I transfered it to mp3s. Everything you hear is exactly what was on the tape. I don't have a lot of server space, so I'll have to post the mp3s a batch at a time. I wouldn't mind if someone wants to provide greater hosting capabilities." Here's David's email if you have some spare hosting capacity you'd like to pass along.
