Web TV Co-Founder Dies at 39 12/30/2003 09:44 AM
Over the course of his career, Goldman worked on the cusp of technology and consumer electronics at firms such as Apple Computer and Microsoft Corp. The cause of his death may take several weeks to determine, the coroner's office said. In 1995, along with former Apple colleagues Steve Perlman and Bruce Leak, Goldman co-founded WebTV Networks, which allowed users to surf the Internet from their televisions. Microsoft bought WebTV in 1997 for $425 million and today is called MSN TV. Last year, Goldman founded Mailblocks, a Los Altos company that sells a Web-based e-mail system that promises to eliminate unwanted e-mail, or spam. Earlier this year, it sued competing companies using similar technology to eliminate spam, claiming patent infringement.

Vivato Co-founder Steps Down

Vivato Co-founder Steps Down 12/22/2003 04:13 PM
Ken Biba, resigned as chairman of Vivato. Geoffrey Baehr, a director at the company, is now chairman. Biba had resigned as CEO a few months ago. Vivato has an interim CEO but is looking for a permenant leader. The spotlight fell on Vivato when it laid off 34 workers starting in the summer. Biba's resignation as CEO encouraged speculation that there was trouble at the company. Vivato has 54 customers. The interim CEO says, in this article, that Vivato doesn't come up against much competition as it chases university customers. That's very funny as I know of a handful of other switch or gateway makers that have university customers. Vivato has plenty of competition for university customers. The story comes from VentureWire, which appears to be a subscription news and information service....

Interview with Wikipedia founder

Interview with Wikipedia founder 08/06/2004 01:14 PM

Slashdot is carrying a great interview with the founder of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is only about three and a half years old, but in that time it has already grown well beyond the size of most standard printed encyclopedias. In the interview, Jim Wales talks about how they manage all that content, how they collect and spend donations to keep it running, and what the future holds for Wikipedia. While Wikipedia isn't Creative Commons licensed content, it is licensed in a similar open fashion and this interview provides insight into what it takes to run a massive open and free content project.

Venture Capital 101 01/06/2005 06:55 AM

In all the speculation about the deal I haven't seen what surely is the motivator. Six Apart plans to go public. The market will value SA based on it's ability to generate profits, and it will likely do so in proportion to the number of users, the theory being that they can sell things to the users, so the more users, the more they can sell. They might value each user at $100. Anyway, the more users the more value. LJ has a lot of users. So the founders of LJ get SA stock, and the shareholders in SA get more users, and value of the combined companies goes up and the day of the IPO gets closer.

Is Venture Capital Over?

Is Venture Capital Over? 04/14/2005 04:52 AM
A well known venture capitalist is apparently claiming that the age of the VC is over, and is getting out of the business. The specifics of his claim are that VCs won't be able to earn the same sorts of returns they did in the 90s, which he chalks up to "systemic change." If anything, it sounds like he's channeling Nicho las Carr, who believes the tech industry is becoming commoditized and boring (misunderstanding that things first get interesting when stuff gets commoditized). Of course, the silly thing is that he seems to be comparing today's VC returns to what you could get in the 90s. He claims that "the eye-popping returns that make venture capital famous are history." Of course, the easy response to that is that perhaps most of the "eye-popping returns" were the aberration in the first place, built on the bubble of hype-cycles past. That means there's still plenty of opportunity in real innovation -- and even without that, you can bet that there will be more hype cycles and bubbles. History< /a> practically guarantees it. While bubbles aren't good for everyone, good VCs generally are able to make out quite well (since they bail out early enough) -- and we've already explained why bubbl es eventually are good for most people. While it's bad for those who get sucked up in the hype, it does accelerate innovation by allowing a lot of companies to quickly test (and discard!) many different ideas.
