Political Publishing

Political Publishing 07/26/2004 05:41 PM

The newsmedia are stiff with wonderment at this new blogging thang, personified by a few dozen of the pesky varmints really being there (what a concept) at the Democratic National Convention. Technorati (disclosure: I’m on the Advisory Board) is trying to do the bigger picture, and every time I go to that page it’s interesting; also Br’er Dave Sifry is going to be CNN’s Ambassador from Blogistan. We could do way worse. The meta-story is more interesting than the story, almost by definition; the Democratic party wants to have an extended tightly-controlled five-day infomercial; the last thing they want is actual news. The news media will play along to some extent but also be furiously looking for some real surprise or conflict or subterfuge in the spirit of if-it-bleeds-it-leads. Two obvious ways the Blogistanis could make a difference would be by uncovering (unexpectedly) real news, or by finding some way to make this largely formal and content-free event a little more human, a little more meaningful, a little funnier. Best of luck, boys and girls. (PS: While on the subject of the political process and the Web as a medium, the Electoral Vote Predictor strikes me as elegant, seamless, and new.)

Self-Publishing Looking Better

Self-Publishing Looking Better 04/27/2004 04:11 PM
Self-publishing of books has had a pretty bad reputation for a while. There were a few success stories, but not many. Now, however, technology is making it easier and much, much cheaper to self-publish, meaning that self-publishing is losing some of its negative connotation. It's certainly not going to wipe out professional publishers, who are there for a reason. However, it does open up more possibilities for people who want to publish books for very focused audiences, or those who see self-publishing as a kind of minor league "warmup" for publishing a book the traditional way. While some fear being inundated with dreadful books, that seems silly. If the books are bad, no one is going to buy them. Besides, there are already plenty of dreadful books out there that you never hear about. A successful book generally requires a marketing campaign that many individual authors are incapable of doing on their own - which is why big publishers are around. However, for some authors, doing their own publicity is a thrill, and gives them much more control over how their book is promoted.

Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle?

Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle? 07/21/2004 08:22 PM
Sometimes it's difficult to break out of habits. While newspapers have a clear reason for having a drop-dead deadline for submitting articles, and a once-a-day publishing schedule, the web world offers them plenty of flexibility in when they publish... which they seem to have promptly ignored. E-Media Tidbits notes a new study showing many online newspapers stick to a once-a-day publishing schedule. It's not that surprising that they do this. It fits within their existing processes, and since many are reusing print copy anyway, it makes some amount of sense. Still, you would expect them to start to realize they can publish on a less strict schedule. It appears some newspapers have made an effort to stay more regularly updated, but many simply don't bother at all. Of course, in doing so, they risk losing readers to other sites that are more timely.

Perils of publishing

Perils of publishing 02/13/2004 05:08 AM

Charles Herrera sent an email yesterday saying that he has a whole new impression of blogging after watching the talk I gave at Microsoft on Monday. It was a gratifying email for another reason.

He says: "To someone who has read Scripting News since the start, but who is not involved in scripting or blogging, it has seemed to me that on occasion you have been forced into a grumpy mode. Sometimes words on a screen don't always convey the sense of the person underneath. Of course, the 'grumpy' that I saw, or thought I saw, comes probably from the flames all around you."

This is worth emphasizing. If you scan an email quickly and there's a bunch of nasty words with someone's name in the middle, the mind has a tendency to connect the words and the person. Unfortunately this is how people read on the Web. Charles noted that I'm a friendly person, in person. I like to think that's true. Sometimes it's hard to see that in the writing. I know.

Wikipedia Publishing CC Metadata 06/30/2004 11:02 AM

Wikipedia now publishes license metadata, using the Creative Commons license metadata vocabulary to describe the GNU FDL license.

Browsing Wikipedia with mozCC installed.

MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikipedia, now has support for CC metadata built in. WikiTravel, a CC-licensed world travel guide also already uses this capability.

Many thanks to Brion Vibber and Evan Prodromou for adding CC metadata support to this important software.

Blogs for scientific publishing

Blogs for scientific publishing 02/01/2005 09:47 PM
Like It or Not, Blogs Have Legs, says an article in the Wired magazine and talks about how blogs can be used in scientific publishing:
In a sense, blogs function like peer-review journals do in the academic world, but there's a key difference. The distribution of articles in academic journals is largely controlled by a publishing cartel that charges exorbitant amounts for subscriptions, which are subsidized by the institutions and universities that can afford them. Think of it as the socialist model for informational exchange. This dampens participation (read: supply of ideas and input) and, I would argue, deleteriously affects the level and quality of discussion.

Heh. And the guy hatest the word "blog" for the same reason as I hate the Finnish word "verkkopäiväkirja" :-)

Publishing-scam vocabulary

Publishing-scam vocabulary 09/21/2004 06:23 AM
Cory Doctorow: Teresa Nielsen Hayden's latest blog-essay on publishing scams explores the vocabulary choices that tip off the likelihood of a sleazy publishing scam:
This is a segment of a larger piece, the working title of which has been "Ambient Misinformation about Publishing and Writing, and the Cultivation of the Reader Mind: A Rant I Didn't Get to Deliver at Noreascon." It has occurred to me that I could write about this one for a very long time without exhausting the subject.

Certain words and phrases are like little genetic markers for scammers. Here's a non-exhaustive list, non-exhaustively explained:

1. "Giving new writers a chance." Also: "Helping new writers."

While agents and publishers frequently do just this thing, they don't talk about it in those terms. For them, it's always a specific new book, a specific new author. Making judgements about which book and which writer they're going to work with is the heart of their job. When you hear someone talking in an indiscriminately general fashion about giving a chance to new writers, there's something wrong.

Same goes for "helping new writers." There might be legitimate projects aimed at helping new writers as a class, but the business they're in isn't agenting or publishing.

The Role of RSS in Science Publishing

The Role of RSS in Science Publishing 12/24/2004 12:28 PM
The Role of RSS in Science Publishing - Syndication and Annotation on the Web by Tony Hammond, Timo Hannay, and Ben Lund
http ://www.dlib.org/dlib/december04/hammond/12hammond.html

Introduction By Author:
RSS is one of a new breed of technologies that is contributing to the ever-expanding dominance of the Web as the pre-eminent, global information medium. It is intimately connected with—though not bound to—social environments such as blogs and wikis, annotation tools such as del.icio.us [1], Flickr [2] and Furl [3], and more recent hybrid utilities such as JotSpot [4], which are reshaping and redefining our view of the Web that has been built up and sustained over the last 10 years and more [n1]. Indeed, Tim Berners-Lee's original conception of the Web [5] was much more of a shared collaboratory than the flat, read-only kaleidoscope that has subsequently emerged: a consumer wonderland, rather than a common cooperative workspace. Where did it all go wrong?

These new 'disruptive' technologies [n2] are now beginning to challenge the orthodoxy of the traditional website and its primacy in users' minds. The bastion of online publishing is under threat as never before. RSS is the very antithesis of the website. It is not a 'home page' for visitors to call at, but rather it provides a synopsis, or snapshot, of the current state of a website with simple titles and links. While titles and links are the joints that articulate an RSS feed, they can be freely embellished with textual descriptions and richer metadata annotations. Thus said, RSS usually functions as a signal of change on a distant website, but it can more generally be interpreted as a kind of network connector—or glue technology—between disparate applications. Syndication and annotation are the order of the day and are beginning to herald a new immediacy in communications and information provision. This paper describes the growing uptake of RSS within science publishing as seen from Nature Publishing Group's (NPG) [6] perspective.

This will be added to my presentation Bots, Blogs and News Aggregators.

Niche Publishing - Engadget

Niche Publishing - Engadget 03/06/2004 01:59 AM

Niche publishing really isn't just for Nick Denton anymore... Peter Rojas, the original blogger behind Gizmodo has broken out of that gig to start Engadget... a competitor to Gizmodo.

Denton still has a leg up (first mover advantage we used to call it) on individuals launching one or two focused sites on their own, as he can aggregate his entire Gawker media property audiences if he wants to for an advertiser, or he can sell the advertising piecemeal... but, folks like Rojas can probably make enough money off their sites short-term to support themselves, and long term to build a living that they enjoy.

Best of luck Peter...

Nature on open access publishing

Nature on open access publishing 06/09/2004 07:19 PM

One of the kings of scientific publishing, the journal Nature, has recently launched a forum to bring together articles and information about open access publishing. They've even got an RSS feed for updates to the forum.

It's great to see a top journal open a dialogue about a somewhat controversial issue in the scientific publishing industry. In an age of ever increasing journal subscription costs and shrinking library budgets, many smaller journals have embraced the concept of open access publishing and a prominent journal started with the issue at heart, but many larger publishers have distanced themselves from the topic. Internet Publishing Attracting Academics By Julie Bell, Baltimore Sun

Manuel Llinas knew his career was at stake. The young scientist had just finished work on an eye-catching paper on the genome of a parasite that causes malaria. Now he and his lab director faced a critical decision: where to submit the article for publication. A prestigious journal such as Science would draw attention and help Llinas when he interviewed for faculty jobs at top research institutions. But Llinas and Joseph DeRisi, his mentor at the University of California at San Francisco, chose a once unthinkable journal. They submitted the paper to PLoS Biology, a free online journal that had yet to publish its first edition.

Online Publishing Discussion List

Online Publishing Discussion List 04/09/2004 04:02 PM

Marketing Wonk has changed their name (again) to MarketingVox. Apparently "wonk" has a negative connotation to some people. As part of the change, the "I-" series of discussion lists are being changed to reflect the new branding. So I-Sales becomes MarketingVox Commerce and the other lists have similar changes. I-Blog, the list I moderate, not only has a new name, but a new editorial focus as well. Rather than just discussing blogs in business, we’re now talking about all sorts of online publishing. I-Blog is now MarketingVox Publishing.

If you have a question about CMSs, want to talk about the best content strategies to increase sales leads, or are wondering about the changing business model for online newspapers, MV|Publishing is the place to do it.
