Are Blogs Ready
for Prime-Time?
June 16, 2004
...A partial profile of blog readers reveals:
* 54% of their news consumption is online
* 21% are bloggers themselves
* 46% describe themselves as opinion makers
...As Henry Copeland, author of the report and CEO of Blogads,
summed up: "86% say that blogs are either useful or extremely useful
as sources of news or opinion. 80% say they read blogs for news they
can't find elsewhere. 78% read because the perspective is better. 66%
value the faster news. 61% say that blogs are more honest. Divided on
so much else, blog readers appear united in their dissatisfaction with
conventional media and their rabid love of
blogs."
Interesting statistics derived from a survey of of
over 10,000 blog readers. Also asserts that blog readers are older,
smarter and spend more money that most people think.

Helping Users Protect Themselves
Helping Users Protect Themselves
07/25/2004 08:43 PM
Some soundbites rom The
weakest security link? It's you, a recent News.com
article:
People are the weakest link.
Education is the first line of defense.
People are still not thinking before opening an (e-mail)
attachment.
The big problem with educating employees on security issues is
being able to track
whether you're getting through to people.
Everyone knows about viruses, for example, but half the people
don't have antivirus
software.
While I agree that people are the weakest security link and even
the world's strongest
lock is useless if not used, I don't think that training employees
about security
and tracking security policy compliance is enough to fix the
problem.
What's the missing ingredient?
Helping users protect themselves.
Just as training drivers all about driving hazards is useless if
the driver is a blind,
users can't protect themselves if they are not fully aware of what
is going on around
them. Was there any suspicoius activities involving my
account since last time
I signed-in? Is there someone accessing my online bank
account at the same time
I am?
If a hacker broke into your computer remotely and used it to send
phishing e-mails
or spams, how would you know? Unexpected blinking network
connection lights?
Something is wrong when it's easier to keep track of friends
logging into their computers
than strangers logging into our computers.
Unfortunately, most designers of today's security products see the
user only as an
input device: I'll give you access to these if you give me
this and that. This
mindset encourages people to be more concerned about lossing access
than gaining protection.
This is why people reuse passwords and write them down in easy to
find places.
Security companies need to start thinking more about helping users
protect themselves
by providing more information about what is going on and letting
them play an active
role in security. If something suspicious is going on, don't
let the information
sit until probability crosses some security policy
thresholds. Inform the user
rightaway. Remember that, to the user, no news is good news
so they'll think
what they are doing is all right unless they are warned away from
dangerous edges.
There are ways to inform the user without getting in their way too
much or making
them paranoid. For example, if an e-mail message has
executable or unknown file
attachements, mark it visibly as potentionally dangerous.
Hyperlinks should
always clearly present the destination URL to the user instead of
hiding it behind
a possibly bogus text.

Thanks For Helping Fix Our Software --
We Won't Sue You This Time
04/06/2005 09:36 PMA security company discovered some vulnerabilities in some Sybase code
a couple weeks ago and handed them over to the company -- who did a
good job of patching the problem relatively quickly. Then, things
started to get messy, as the security company got ready to explain
what the vulnerabilities were, leading Sybase to threaten to sue them.
That's some thank you for finding the security hole. After a public
backlash, Sybase has
called off its legal
dogs and issued an
odd
announcement "thanking" the company they were thinking about suing
just a day before. It's amazing that this sort of thing keeps coming
up. While this case had a bit of a
twist,
in that the bug was already patched, it's still all about a company
trying to hide where its vulnerabilities are, rather than owning up to
them. Security holes happen. Everyone knows that. The real question
is how a company deals with them -- and that goes beyond just how
quickly they patch the holes, but how they treat those who are helping
them
fix their software by finding the holes in the first
place.

04/10/2004 06:22 AMGeorge Santayana wrote in 1905, "Those who cannot remember the past
are condemned to repeat it." Nearly 100 years later, independent
software vendors should heed his aphorism. Too many ISVs create
software as though it will exist in a vacuum, humming along doing its
thing without the need to interface with other enterprise
applications. It was this type of thinking that created the enterprise
application integration industry.

Is Google Helping China Censor the Net?
Is Google Helping China Censor the Net?
09/22/2004 01:49 PMNew Scientist: Google
omits controversial news stories in China. Some users recently
reported that Google's Chinese news search returned different results
depending when they searched using a computer based outside of China.
The claims were substantiated by researchers who connected to
computers inside the country.
Very disturbing if
true, but not all that surprising.
The tech industry, after all, has happily been supplying China with
technology that helps keep the Great Firewall up and running.
Networking giant Cisco, for example, is just one of the many suppliers
in this system.
The Net will be zoned, it seems.

looking for. Text that takes visitors' needs into account can help

Tell me again how Bush's War on Iraq is

Tell me again how Bush's War on Iraq is
helping the war on terrorism?
04/09/2004 04:01 PMAP reported today: The Abdel-Aziz al-Samarrai mosque was hit by U.S.
aircraft that launched a Hellfire missile at its minaret and dropped a
500-pound bomb on a wall surrounding the compound. The U.S. military
said insurgents were using the mosque for a military fire base. Iraqi
witnesses estimated 40 people were killed as they gathered for
afternoon prayers. I wonder what this is going to look like on the TV
screens on houses throughout the Middle East, as Al-Jazeera sends the
images out of the Christian Crusader occupation troops in Iraq bombing
mosques and killing worshippers. Just imagine what the reaction would
be if Americans saw TV coverage of Canadian Baptist churches being
bombed by the Saudi air force. I assume that the American military is
correct, and that Iraqi resistance members were using the mosque for a
military fire base. It doesn't matter. The so-called war on terrorism
is in large part a war for hearts and minds, and with images like this
being engraved upon the hearts and minds of Arab youth, we are losing
that war, as everyone who knew anything about the area (including Bush
senior) predicted would happen if we occupied Iraq. And more people,
including American boys and girls in uniform, continue to die for
Bush's lies. AP says: Since Sunday, 35 Americans, two other coalition
soldiers and more than 230 Iraqis have been killed in fighting. The
Iraqi figure did not include those killed at the mosque. Since the war
began, at least 630 U.S. service members have died. Update 2 hours
later: With a little bit of searching, you can see what the Arab world
is seeing, such as this series (warning: extremely graphic) of what
they describe as the pictures of Iraqi children killed in the siege of
Falluja....
