T-Mobile Pulls HP iPaq h6315,
Unofficially Offers Replacements
03/23/2005 05:37 PM

h6315_pulled.jpgIt looks like the problems with the HP iPaq h6315 over at T-Mobile are coming to a head, with the device pulled from both business and consumer sales sites, and an official, but unpublicized (until now) exchange program for disatisfied customers. It looks like T-Mobile will be offering refurbished Treo 600s and BlackBerries to those customers who meet their replacement qualifications. PhoneMag has the details, including the internal memo going out to the sales force with information about the replacement and warranty status of the h6315.

Dell Offers Unlimited GPRS with New Card

Dell Offers Unlimited GPRS with New Card
and T-Mobile
11/10/2003 10:53 PM
Dell's new card for tri-mode GPRS is $99, but it allows unlimited GPRS use on T-Mobile's network for $30 per month: The card works on Dell Latitude and Inspiron notebooks, and you can subscribe to either AT&T Wireless or T-Mobile for service. However, AT&T's plan starts at $30 per month for 10 Mb, while T-Mobile's offering is $30 per month for unlimited usage or $50 per month for unlimited GPRS and hotspot use on T-Mobile's network. Here's an important note, however: the unlimited GPRS for no additional fee does require activation and a one-year commitment, but it also only includes T-Mobile's GPRS network. How extensive that network is, I'm not sure, but the question is whether or not you're informed when you're roaming and using GPRS: can you just not connect or are you charged some enormous rate without knowing about?...

New iPAQ Pocket PC

New iPAQ Pocket PC 07/27/2004 02:43 AM

I'll be honest I have a iPAQ one that I purchased last year. It was a big waste of money. My laptop is with me about 90% of the time. I play games on it on airplanes and try and figure out how to re-coup my money. Someone needs to come up with a book on how to be productive with a Pocket PC. I am sure their is one out there but I'd hate to waste more money. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant to buy a tablet. I'm afraid it would be a waste of money.

iPAQ_rz1715.jpg imageSee, I told you guys I'd link to more HP stuff if it was worthwhile; namely, PDA Buyer's Guide takes out the low-end of the new iPAQs, the rz1715 (codename: Lil' Rizzizzeal), and while they find it to exude the trademark fit-and-finish of the HP iPAQ line, a lack of features (compared to the last generation, even, not just the newly-release iPAQs) makes the $275 suitable mostly for PDA tinkerers who just need a Pocket PC for its core functions (Personal Information Management, etc.)

HP iPaq rx3715 Reviewed

HP iPaq rx3715 Reviewed 08/31/2004 09:43 AM

Trusted Reviews takes a gander at the HP iPaq rx7815, a middle-range Pocket PC that HP is positioning as a "mobile media" device, and they seem to come away somewhat impressed, although to be honest it's sort of a hard review to read (in the 'figure out how they feel' sense not the 'bad English' sense). As for features, the rx3715 is strong enough, with integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (b) and even a decent camera (which is to say, better than VGA), but I think maybe the mezzo-mezzo tone of the review - and here is where I go out a limb, perhaps - is indicative not of HP's failings with this particular iPaq, but just a general malaise that is clouding our feelings about PDAs. We know what they do, they do it fairly well, but nobody is figuring out how to really make them any more useful.

To HP's credit, it does look like they are really trying to develop some new software that does new, interesting things. It looks like they're sort of succeeding.

HP iPaq RW6100 Photos

HP iPaq RW6100 Photos 08/18/2004 08:38 AM

kap3_rw6100.jpg imageWhoa, this is a crazy one. There apparently had been rumors floating about of a new HP iPaq Smartphone, called the RW6100, and pictures have surfaced on a Korean website of what looks to be that very thing. What's interesting to me, though, is that it appears to be a slider, although with just a keypad underneath instead of a keyboard. It has a marked resemblance, in fact, to the Samsung SGH-D410 we reviewed last week, although it looks a lot bigger. Could be a very nice compromise between capability and size if it all pans out.

I've had the HP iPaq h6315 - their newest, actually-released Smartphone - in here for the last few days, and while I'll probably give it a proper review here soon, it's cemented my notion that I'm not that impressed with Windows Smartphones in the larger slate form factor anymore. If you don't mind things being way too huge for pockets, though, it's got a lot to offer.

HP iPaq H6310 Pre-Production Hands On 06/09/2004 12:33 PM

h6310_hha.jpg imageSlashPhone has a short review from a user that got to play with a pre-production version of the HP iPaq H6310, the upcoming super-connected Windows Mobile Phone Edition 2003 PDA with quad-band GSM/GPRS, WiFi, and Bluetooth. It's even going to support EDGE networks, or so they say. Even better, the H6310 will come with a snap-on thumbboard as HP positions the $500 device to compete with RIM Blackberries, as well. Definitely one to watch.

iPaq rz1715 Reviewed; Not Pretty 07/30/2004 07:07 AM

rz_review1715.jpg imageiPaqHQ has one of the first reviews of the new HP iPAQ rz1715 "Mobile Media Companion" Pocket PC, and let's just say that they aren't terribly impressed. It's not that it's bad so much as it's not any better than previous generations (like the h1945, say), and in a few objective ways (it's larger; it doesn't have a removable battery; it has less memory; no Bluetooth) and some subjective ways (it's too square; Carly Fiorina cut me off in the deli line) it's clearly worse. So the moral of the story is basically that, for the low-end Pocket PC customer, it's time to start checking out the Dell Axim X30.
