Too Old To Google? Google Accused Of
Age Discrimination
07/23/2004 11:28 PMFunny that the lawsuits against Google seem to be coming faster and
faster the closer we get to the IPO. The latest is that
Google is being accused of age discrimination in the
firing of a director there, apparently suggesting to him that he
didn't fit with their "youthful atmosphere." As with many such
claims, it's tough to tell what the real details are. The guy stands
to lose a lot in the stock he didn't get, and while the filing makes
some serious claims, these types of lawsuits are usually pretty
difficult to prove.

piece suggesting Kerry would be a big plus for big cable. I'm
skeptical. Indeed, I'm positively encouraged by two facts friends have
helped me see: (1) despite the pressure of his best buddy, Senator
Hollings, Kerry did not support the Fritz chip, and (2)
this
letter to the FCC pushing the FCC to insist upon non-discrmination in
the context of the AOL merger, long long before non-discrimination was
the way others were framing the question.

01/03/2004 03:42 AMThis post on the well-known practice of product "crimping" (reducing
the value of lower-end products in a line) had one surprising example,
which I'd like to believe, but have trouble doing: "A very subtle form
of product crimping allegedly is employed by American airlines. On
flights with a high proportion of full-fare passengers, American
improves the quality of the meal service, thereby rewarding the
full-fare passengers and injuring, on average, discount flyers."

12/24/2003 04:53 PM "It's
good policy and good business." NYC's Employees Retirement System
(5 funds managing $78.6 billion in holdings) is targeting Fortune 500
companies to adopt policies that specifically bar discrimination based
on sexual orientation. One of them, CSX Corp., didn't even wait for
their shareholder meeting, but immediately amended their policy in
response.
These funds recently had
great
success after a decade-long battle with Cracker Barrel
Restaurants--infamous for firing gay and lesbian employees because
they don't “demonstrate normal heterosexual values."
Here's wishing an especially happy holiday to employees of those
companies that have stopped discriminating and hopes for many
more to join in. More info on this "shareholder activism" at
