Campaigns track voters' personal data. Ever wonder why you get mail and calls from particular political groups, and not others? Turns out the political parties are developing far richer datasets on individuals than the government is. Aristotle International, Inc. (mentioned in the article) is the giant in the field, but there's much smaller ones all over the place (Weave, for instance, helps with environmental activism, and Local Victory is an example on the right). On the one hand, with limited resources, campaigns would say they must do this. On the other hand (as the article points out) it may partially explain why fewer and fewer seem to participate in the electoral process.

For well over a year folks at the FTC have been "concer ned" about the rise of "paid search" results, where results that are paid for are included without any indication to he end-user that these are sponsored results. Search Engine Guide takes a look at a few different search engines and de monstrates just how deceptive this is - as plenty of search engines are almost entirely made up of paid for results without indicating the monetary relationship. Of course, if the paid search results are that bad, you would think people would go elsewhere - and, there's plenty of evidence to suggest they do. Studies show that the majority of folks still use Google - who is very clear on separating paid results from straight search results.

It seems that paid search is getting a ton of interest these days, with the two big providers being Google and Yahoo. As competitors, though, the battle is starting to get a little nastier. Yahoo recently banned Shopping.com from advertising on their site, because the ads directed users to a page that included Google ads. Eventually, the two companies worked out an agreement to include some Yahoo ads as well. The article points out that this raises some questions about how companies will deal with being blocked from advertising on certain search engines if they do business with the other. To be honest, though, this policy from Yahoo seems shortsighted. It's not as if they don't get money from Shopping.com when people click through the ads - even if they then go on to click through more Google ads. Why should Yahoo care what the person does after they've clicked through the ad - so long as the ad results are relevant? Obviously, they want more advertising dollars (and getting another deal with a company is valuable), but this seems to be a case where the company was doing more to take business away from a competitor than make business better for themselves.

Now that pop-up and banner ad blocking software is becoming more common, the makers of such products are turning their efforts to other sneaky advertising tricks. InterMute, makers of AdSubtract, are launching a product that will try to remove paid inclusion search results that have been coming under increas ing scrutiny lately. It's a little unclear from the article exactly how the search removal program will work. It might just be designed to work with sites (like Google) where the paid text ads are obvious - but it suggests that it will try to pick them out of other search engines where the paid inclusions are mixed right in with the unpaid. Of course, I wonder how big a market there is for such technology? While the more tech savvy folks may know about paid inclusions, most people don't. Furthermore, they're not intrusive - which is what is most annoying about pop-ups and spam. People are willing to pay to get rid of intrusive advertising, but I'm not sure they're willing to pay to get rid of subtle advertising.

Editor and Publisher - NEW YORK Consulting group Borrell Associates Inc. has done an about-face on its recommendations for newspaper partnerships with paid search offered by companies such as Google and Yahoo!
