Only 25% of condoms used "properly" in

Only 25% of condoms used "properly" in
India
08/15/2004 07:51 AMIndia's government began distributing free condoms in the '60s to stem
population growth, and they're made available today for HIV/AIDS
prevention. But according to a recently-released report, only a
quarter of the 1.5 billion condoms manufactured each year in India are
"properly utilised":
According to two university reports, rural villagers have used them as
disposable water containers to wash, after relieving themselves in the
fields. India's military have covered gun and tank barrels with
condoms as protection against dust.
Of the 891 million condoms meant to be handed out free, a considerable
proportion were acquired by road-building contractors who mixed them
with concrete and tar and used the mixture to construct roads,
rendering road surfaces smooth and resistant to cracks. Builders
spread a bed of condoms beneath cement plastering on roofs,
ingeniously preventing water seepage during the monsoon rains.
Weavers in Varanasi used around 200,000 condoms a day to lubricate
their looms and to polish the gold and silver thread used to embroider
the saris they produced. Sari maker Yusuf Bhai said they purchased the
condoms from agents, who reportedly acquired them from agencies
involved in family planning and AIDS prevention schemes.

Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai
Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai

BB Reader
Dan Washburn in
Shanghai says:
While Bliss paid our bills recently during a trip to a typically
unfriendly neighborhood KEDI market — many bills get paid at 24-hour
shops here in Shanghai — I perused the condom display rack, always
good for a laugh. Always, indeed. Flavored condoms. Ice Cream. Green
Tea. And, my personal favorite, Ordinary.
I find the concept of flavored condoms humorous to begin with, but
I’ve also never had to taste a condom. So I guess they serve
their purpose. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, right?
(Or, in this case, it actually prevents it from going down.) Ice
cream? OK, I guess I can undertand this one. But there are
many flavors of ice cream out there. Let’s hope
it’s not Mississippi Mud Pie or Moose Tracks or
Brownie Batter or anything that ends in
“nut crunch.” Something like Karamel Sutra seems appropriate. But, hell,
it’s probably Green Tea Ice Cream.

For all you hip-pained athletes
For all you hip-pained athletes
12/19/2004 03:21 PMFrom the American Academy of Family Physicians comes this detailed
publication on Hip Pain in Athletes. While it's obviously written for
medical professionals (ones who recognize words like 'acetabulum' and
'femoral head'), I found it useful in preparing for my trip to the
orthopedic specialist. I've had a nagging pain since before the
marathon, nothing too severe so I just ran through it. Now that I've
been back in NYC and sitting much more than before, the pain's gotten
worse. So I finally broke down and went to the doctor. I've been
laying off the running, except for my races, and hopefully today will
get to the bottom of the issue. I think (hope) it's just inflammation
that will pass with ice, rest, and NSAIDs.

MS wish British Athletes best of luck in
the Olympics
08/17/2004 03:15 PMBirmingham, England, home town to
many Neowinians, is also a site of support for the
British Olypmic hopes. For the next few days, Microsoft will be
offering passers by to write messages of congratulations,
commiseration and support to British Athletes competing in at the 2004
Olympics, in Greece.
Microsoft, an Olympic sponsor, is in the centre of Birmingham with the
British Olympic Association drawing attention to lesser supported
sports, such as fencing. These sports have traditionally received less
coverage in comparison to the likes of swimming; the same applies in
terms of funding. The event is designed to increase funding and
interest in these sports, and ultimately raise British medal hopes.
Microsoft are also using the event to show off their Tablet PC, and
it's new technologies. Combined with its integrated hand writing
software, people can literally use these devices as portable notepads.
Fun, undoubtedly, but questionably useful; this issue is perhaps on of
the reasons for their low uptake in the main stream market.
Asides from sponsoring British athletes, Microsoft are also managing
the British Olympic Associations IT needs (more info via the link
below). If you wish to send a message to the British team in Athens,
you can do so
here.

The AP reports that the IOC bars athletes,
coaches from writing first-hand accounts This reminds me of the
(now defunct) rule that companies couldn't report earnings and other
reports on the Internet until after newspapers had time to print. This
was supposed prevent an "unfair advantage" for people who use the
Internet. Protecting traditional journalists by muzzling first-hand
reports from athletes and coaches is so wrong and stupid.
