Real Hacks the iPod
Real Hacks the iPod
07/26/2004 09:01 AMCNET: RealNetworks breaks Apple's hold on iPod.
RealNetworks announced Monday that it has unlocked some of Apple
Computer's most tightly held technology secrets, giving its music a
way onto the popular iPod digital music player.
There's good news in this announcement, namely the fact
that Real is forcing a tiny bit more openness on Apple, which has been
trying for a winner-take-all approach to digital music. More choice,
and less lock-in, by these companies is always a good idea.
But Real is no prize when it comes to locking customers into another
box: the one the music industry has created with its insistence on
absolute control over digital music. Real's approach to selling songs
is not that at all: It says you're only renting them. At least Apple
says you (mostly) own what you're buying.
Nonetheless, this is progress of a sort.
Real Networks moves into iPod country
Real Networks moves into iPod country
07/27/2004 03:53 AMI have purchased a total of 3 songs from iTunes and probably a 100
from the Music Match network which I have loaded on my iPod was it
difficult, not at all in my opinion. I just had to be smart. I like
the idea of not having to go through hoops to move the music to the
iPod so Real may get some of my business. But If I was a betting man I
would wager that Apple's legal team will be trying to shut this down.

01/06/2004 03:13 AMClearly, we don't have enough incompatible formats for music download
stores, because Real Networks has decided they can make a real dent in
the marketplace by offering
yet another me-too music download store - but with
increased copy protection that no one supports. Thus, you can
download songs from Real, but you won't be able to play them on just
about any digital music player right now. How does this benefit
consumers? That part isn't clear.

07/30/2004 01:53 AMJust months after RealNetworks approached Apple with open arms to
coordinate their online music strategies only to be spurned;
RealNetworks shocked the world of digital music by introducing
"Harmony." In the aftermath of Harmony's launch, the souring
relationship between RealNetworks and Apple can be described as
anything but harmonious.

Why do iPod lovers had Real?
08/18/2004 04:33 PMNelson makes a very good point: I'm puzzled by the backlash against
RealNetworks for figuring out how to get music onto the iPod. Sure, I
think Real makes crummy products too. But they've opened up Apple's
proprietary platform, increasing choice for consumers and lowering
prices. How does the user lose? Now I'm all for bashing Big Evil
Companies that do Stupid Things, but I'm also a fan of cracking open
that little white music jail too. Like Nelson, I don't...

Real ships guerrilla DRM for the iPod
Real ships guerrilla DRM for the iPod
07/26/2004 01:59 AMReal Networks have reverse-engineered Apple's iPod and written a
player for its DRM "Helix" format, which they're giving away. This
means that you'll be able to play the Helix files you buy from Real
on your Apple iPod.
I'm cautiously glad about this. It's the right idea: tech vendors
should be writing tools that allow anyone to play anything on
anything: it's insane to own an Apple "record player" that only plays
Apple "records" -- meaning that if you buy your records from Real, you
need to buy another record player.
My only disappointment is that Real is engaged in the same behaviour:
Real's records only play on players licensed by Real: it would be much
more customer-friendly if Real went into the business of providing us
with music in a patent-free, open standard that could be implemented
by anyone.

Google hacks are for real
Google hacks are for real
08/06/2004 09:40 AMGoogle hacks are for real, regardless of what some uber-hackers may
think or say. They can produce passwords, user IDs, credit card
numbers, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and routing
codes, and more. They can also be used to troll for vulnerabilities.
One quick example: using one of the simplest Google advanced operators
in combination with another operator, I quickly found a number of
Microsoft IIS 6.0 Authentication Manager pages exposed to the Internet
on Army, Navy, state, and federal agency sites. In fact, finding the
sites proved to be much easier than alerting them to the
vulnerability.

08/18/2004 06:32 AMRealNetworks seemed to assume that everyone was on their side in their
effort to

open comments section, officially for people to express their anger at
Apple for refusing to license FairTunes. Instead, Real discovered
that people can say whatever they want when you give them an open

they started bashing Real Networks instead. As you
might expect, the open forums didn't last long -- though, expecting as
much, some enterprising folks made sure to copy what was on the page
before it disappeared.
