More-Clicks - All Patented

theodp writes "Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for application launch, which covers causing different actions to occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?" What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a right mouse click if you hold down the button.

What does deployment mean?

Phase 2. Semantic Web, Phase 2: Developments and Deployment Eric Miller’s slides from WWW2004. In one he lists the following other presentations at WWW2004 which feature Semantic Web deployment : Charles Myers - Adobe (PDF presentation) ... [Raw]

Dam now see - if there isn't a better example of the difference between product folks and research folks - their list of deployments is a list of .ppts (PowerPoint slides.)

Call me crazy - but to me - a list of deployements would be (heaven forbid) a list of sites of deployed code - working - for humans to play and learn from.

Is there a disconnect here?

Automating deployment with Subversion

Automating deployment with Subversion 04/07/2005 12:02 AM

Any developer knows that deployment is often a highly-manual process. In this edition of Linux.Ars, the crew looks at a tool — Subversion — that can make deployment from a development to production environment nearly painless.

The process is fairly painless. On the development server, I check out my website from Subversion. This, particularly when adding an existing project to Subversion, allows me to make sure that i have a complete working copy under version control. Next, I add a post-commit script on my Subversion server.

There's more, but you'll have to read on to get the goods on Subversion. In addition, we've got Tools, Tips, and Tweaks covering Synergy, an app that allows you to control multiple machines using a single keyboard and mouse, and even share a clipboard. There's also other tidbits from the week's Linux news and of course, the Cool App of the Week. Read on.

Mark Levison, one of the developers I interviewed for the .NET story, thinks that Microsoft has undersold the benefits of No-Touch Deployment (NTD), the current solution for running rich .NET clients from the Web. Having done the gruntwork required to understand and use NTD, Mark's not so sure that developers ought to write off this technology and wait for Whidbey's ClickOnce. ...

Because it's "nearly all," you still have to check whether a particular Kinko's has service before you expect to use it....

Fiber to the home deployment schedule

Fiber to the home deployment schedule 01/07/2004 05:23 PM
Reuters: "Verizon said Monday that its initial [fiber] deployment plans involve about 1 million homes next year, with the pace potentially doubling in 2005."

So let's see.  Verizon has 30 million residential customers.  If they pass 1 million homes with fiber in 2004 and double that to 2 million per year in 2005, they'll light everyone up by 2020.  Assuming they actually deploy this time, unlike prior telco fiber promises.

Near Real-Time Content Deployment

Near Real-Time Content Deployment 06/11/2004 10:14 PM

I just got finished watching Ronald Reagan's funeral. It was very, very touching. I was intrigued by all the pagentry of it — this is the first presidential funeral in 31 years, and the formality and choreography of the thing is just amazing.

Anyway, at the end, Nancy was sitting near the casket and she got up to say her final goodbye. She broke down in tears over the casket, and all her children came to comfort her. The noise of the camera shutters was just defeaning by this point — they were going off like machine guns.

Immediately after Nancy and the Reagan children left the podium, I shut off the TV and came down here to my office to check my email. I get to my mail through Mozilla, and CNN.com is my home page.

I was amazed to see the picture on the lead story was the exact same image of Nancy and the children that I saw on live TV not 90 seconds before. The mechanics of content deployment that fast on that big of a stage must have been something to behold.
