“After compressing hard drive warranties to just a year, Seagate is reversing the trend, announcing a heady five-year warranty for its internal desktop and notebook hard drives. The extended warranty covers drives bought from authorized dealers, says Joe Cousins, Seagate’s senior director of Global Channel Marketing. Buyer demands drove the decision, he says. “Our customers are telling us that a one-year warranty isn’t satisfying their needs,” Cousins says. “We’re working to get closer to our…

Seagate Believes In Self, Ups Hard Disk
Warranties to Five Years
07/27/2004 09:21 AM

logo_www_seagate.jpg imageUnless you consider hard drives to be disposable (not a bad policy, given current failure rates), you'll probably be interested in hearing that hard drive manufacturer Seagate has upped to warranty period for all of its consumer hard drives to five years. Over the last couple of years, most major hard disk manufacturers had quietly changed their warranty period to one year (most were at a three year warranty before that), in spite of (or because of) an increasingly poor record of drive life-cycles. It has since become almost a joke to presume that any hard drive will last longer than a couple of years without failure; an interesting proposition, considering that the average computer user still keeps all of their data on a single drive.

Of course, just because a drive has a five year warranty doesn't mean the drive will last that long. You should still back up like a good Computer Scout. But in the worst case, at least you'll be able to get a replacement drive while you're tearing up over years of lost pornography.

Harddrive Industry increasing
warranties?

Harddrive Industry increasing
warranties?
09/01/2004 03:09 PM
X-Bit Labs is reporting that major hard drive maker, Maxtor, has increased the length of time its products are under warranty. Maxtor are now offering their products under 3 year warranty, up from 1 year. Apparently, the move is being made after rival Seagate increased their warranty time from 3 to 5 years.

This action will come as a relief to many, and a surprise. It was only 2 years ago that the major industry players reduced the length of time their products were under warranty. The move was sparked after a series of high profile product faults that cost hard drive makers a lot of money.

In recent years, the hard drive market has matured with many traditional makers (IBM, Fujitsu) leaving the market. Rapid technological advancement, coupled with tough competition in the market, are cited as reasons for the exits. It's expected that other market players will follow Maxtor and Seagate in increasing the length of warranty.

Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.
