dropped in favor of speed, frequency: Wi-Fi Protected Access,
the subset of IEEE 802.11i security revisions still in progress, will
be certified by May, resulting in massive firmware upgrades for tons
and tons of devices. The Wi-Fi Zone program will identify the local
service as 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz, and 11 Mbps or 54 Mbps. A little bit

if Netflix appreciates how great the Hacking Netflix site is for them
even if it's also writing about the Bad Stuff. You'd think it'd be
really old news by now, but maybe not. (Actually, knowing other
corporations a bit from the inside I'd say certainly not ... sigh)...

12/19/2004 03:43 PMWhat's with the green Netflix envelopes? Hacking Netflix thinks it's
because of the Shrek 2 promotion, but it's not just Shrek Green, it's
Bright Neon Green. In related news, they have been hideously slow
receiving and shipping movies in their Santa Ana distribution center
lately. Movies are taking 2-3 days to be received there and ~2 days to
get here where it used to be 1-2 days for them to receive it and 1 day
for us to get it....

Tiger Envelopes makes cryptography work with
almost any email software. It is a personal mail
proxy server with automatic encryption. Tiger uses
SMTP and POP3 to work with almost any mail client,
crypto plugins to work with almost any type of
cryptography, and Java to run on almost any
operating system. Plugins for Bouncy Castle, GPG,
and PGP are included.
Changes:
This release automatically exchanges keys peer-to-peer. When both
people are using Tiger Envelopes, one unencrypted email message is all
it takes. After that, every message in either direction is encrypted
automatically. You should verify keys by checking the key fingerprints
through a separate channel, such as face to face or by telephone.

A first look at Vector Linux 4.0, SOHO
edition
04/09/2004 04:04 PMVector Linux has always interested me because of its purpose and
origin: a simplified distribution from a Slackware base. Last month
Vector's developers announced the first release candidate for Vector
Linux 4.0 SOHO edition. Since, to quote Vector's main page, Slackware
Linux has always been "about as user-friendly as a coiled
rattlesnake," I was curious to see how Vector Linux addressed these
issues for home users while still keeping the Slackware reliability
and speed. I'm sorry to report that their efforts have not been
especially successful.

ISO my perfect SOHO accounting for Linux
11/12/2003 01:13 PMI've been doing a background search for a Linux accounting package for
small business the past week or so. The trigger for the search was the
recent news of AppGen's apparent demise. It hasn't been so much a
problem of finding accounting apps for Linux as it has been finding
one I've wanted to use. But I've found one now. It's very nice, it's
called QHacc. The only drawback I've found is that it's for home use,
not business. My search for a SOHO accounting package will have to
continue. This is not a review of QHacc. It's an update on my
search-to-date for my perfect SOHO accounting solution for Linux,
coupled with an introduction to QHacc.
