THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW review by Harry Knowles
The hate and spite that THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW is going
to get is going to be a rare sight. For me
I enjoy the film as a
beautiful work of science fiction along the best George Pal
traditions. I enjoy the film as a story of a man enduring the
impossible to keep a promise made to his son and working on the faith
that his son was smart enough to survive similar impossible odds. I
enjoy that the film reaffirms that Austin is the best place to live in
the United States. Lastly, I enjoy the film as a Jonathan Swift style
black satire regarding the absolutely irresponsible scientific and
environmental misjudgments of the Bush Administration, and in
particular
Im quite fond of the portrayal of the puppet
President and the incompetent Stromboli Vice President, even though
they didnt go the cheap route of hiring dead on
look-alikes
what is there, is an obvious parody of a President
that was seemingly on Vacation and doing photo-ops whilst crisis hit
the country, with no clue how to respond
and a belligerent
Vice-President with no patience or tolerance for any input outside of
that of his own personal realm of experience. Obviously this
isnt meant to be Bush and Cheney. Obviously. No, Really it
isnt. Theyre even different names. So theres no
reason to get
defensive. Ahem.
Like I said those four levels of enjoyment are
why I dig this movie.
The George Pal
tradition of grand science fiction disaster filmmaking being the
highest level of reason for enjoyment. You look at his TIME MACHINE or
WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE or ATLANTIS: THE LOST CONTINENT or THE WAR
OF THE WORLDS and you can see the obvious parallels. Emmerich has a
fetish for enormous scale destruction, and nobody makes the deaths of
hundreds of thousands more beautiful to watch. Yes, I know thats
kinda sick to say, but its true. Its like that nuclear
blast in L.A. from T2 that Cameron shot
stunningly
gorgeous
But compare the beauty and spectacle of Emmerichs
Los Angeles Twister sequence to Jan De Bonts TWISTER and
theres no comparison. Roland wins hands down. Compare the beauty
of Emmerichs Ice Aged New York, to that of Spielbergs in
AI
I lean towards Roland again. His skies are so beautiful, the
weather spectacle, truly awe-inspiring. In KEY LARGO, when Lionel
Barrymores character went into his big speech about making
a big wave I had always imagined a single big
tsunami
now in my mind, Ill think of the awesome force of
the surge that swept over New York. WOW! Thats Spectacle!
In George Pals epics the stars were
cautionary scientists that kept cool heads, usually had some damsel
that got in distress and a society in the sway of extinction. Well,
Emmerichs contribution to the disaster film is bringing in what
I call the Holy Trinity of Science Fiction Character Dynamics, which
tend to be defined by the Kirk, Spock & McCoy model. Only,
Emmerich applies it to all character dynamics.
In THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, its
made up of a series of trios. You have Jake Gyllenhaal, the girl
hes sweet on, and his geeky friend. You have Dennis Quaid, the
guy hes been doing science with forever and his geeky friend.
You have Ian Holm, the emotional and responsible associate with a new
borne and the geeky soccer loving associate. You have the Vice
President, the lead science advisor kiss ass and clueless comedic
President. You have Sela Ward, her longtime associate and the Peter
Pan loving sick kid. You have the head New York Librarian, the
longtime traditionalist librarian and the indie-minded feminist
librarian type. You have the homeless guy, his dog he loves and the
comedic New York Police Officer guy. HOWEVER sometimes
the dynamics shift around
Like in Dennis Quaids central
core character grouping theyre joined by hot Asian NASA
Girl, that his geeky friend/associate gets a crush on, meaning the
long time science associate is rendered useless and therefore
disposable to the team. Then theres alternate
groupings of 3s like Quaids father, Sela Wards
mother and Jake Gyllenhaals son dynamic. Or Jake Gyllenhaal,
that yummy girl hes got a crush on and the rich kid making the
moves on her dynamic. Again
all in threes. Does Emmerich
know he does this? Or is this some crazed numerology thing
I
mean
theres even 3 super storm systems, 3 astronauts in
the space station and a 3 act story structure! If I keep this up,
Ill go insane finding the 3s in my own life and how all
dynamics abide by the Kirk, Spock and McCoy pattern. You may think it
is crazy
but look at your own trios
and Im not
talking about that insane cel phone with all the buttons.
Ultimately the most important trio that comes into
play is the structure the film takes after the disaster has hit and
the film follows the insular family unit and what each is doing. How
the mother is continuing to care for the sick Peter Pan loving kid,
How the father begins his epic quest to reach the son, and the
sons desperate attempt to survive the cataclysmic disaster that
befalls New York. Personally I really liked this structure and
I like that the film reaches the effects peak at the midpoint, then
slows down and narrows its focus to these three familial story
threads to show what this family did to try to remain a family
even with the epic disaster around them and divided by great distance.
This might be a bit schmaltzy for many of you, but I like insular
family units, patriotic spectacle and the cinematic deaths of
millions.
The reaffirming my belief that Austin is the best
place to live in the United States was absolutely confirmed by
the film. As youll see at the end of the film from outer space,
Austin, Texas is not frozen by the on-coming Ice Age. Not only that
but the librarian that was attempting to save a Guttenberg
Bible
well, that was all noble and all
but the two stored
at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas wouldve
survived and I have heard theyre in better condition than
that one that New York City has. Since Washington D.C., New York and
Los Angeles were all destroyed
I think this should just
underline to future investors to invest in Austins burgeoning
film community. Hollywoods studios will be destroyed by
cataclysm, as will Torontos and New Yorks film facilities.
This means that Austin really is the key creative place to be, with
its awesome music, film and arts community, its also a
political center
so it seems that the Capital of the United
States should move here, the intellectuals and creatives should all
reside here and I really do recommend that you really hot babes out
there that are concerned about survival
that you move to Austin
as well.
Lastly theres the Political Aspect and the
Science Aspect of the film. I fully approve. Sure the speed with which
the disaster hits may seem ludicrous to todays scientific models
and data
but if the highly improbable series of circumstances as
underlined in this films reality were set about to happen
I suppose I can believe in the fiction of the film. If a
storm system were able to suck down the temperatures from the highest
levels of our atmosphere the way their models showed
I suppose
that instant freezing thing could happen
and the point regarding
how did the Ice Age Mammoths freeze with undigested food still
preserved inside of them
meaning that freezing was
instantaneous
and then extrapolating this as a possibility
well
I dont know how else to explain it, so thisll
work for now. As for the nose thumbing at the Bush
Administrations Environmental crimes and arrogance
AMEN!
But then I live in Austin, we send people to jail for life just for
poisoning an old tree
and we come together to save endangered
ridiculous animals so the rich cant golf! And given I used to go
door to door for CLEAN WATER ACTION, an environmental advocacy
group
well, Im somewhat predisposed to listen to
scientists and consider the long term worldwide implications of modern
day scientific and environmental policies. But then, like I said
Im a proud liberal and this is a proud piece of liberal science
fiction done really well, now if only it had Bruce Dern starring and
Joan Baez contributing to the soundtrack! That would have
ruled!

Alan Moore on our modern distopia
Alan Moore on our modern distopia
07/22/2004 02:31 AMSalon has an excellent interview with Alan Moore, the man behind
Watchmen, From Hell and other canonically awesome funnybooks. Moore
talks distopian politics:
One of the reasons we singled out media in "V for Vendetta" was
because it is one of the most useful tools of tyranny. We invite it
into our own home every night; I'm sure that some of us think of it as
a friend. That might be a horrifying notion but I'm sure there are
people who think of television as perhaps one of their most intimate
friends. And if the TV tells them that things in the world are a
certain way, even if the evidence of their senses asserts it is not
true, they'll probably believe the television set in the end. It's an
alarming thought but we brought it upon ourselves. I mean, I think
that television is one of the most diabolical -- in the very best
sense of the word -- inventions of the past century. It has probably
done more to degrade the mind and intelligence of its audience, even
if they happen to be drug addicts or alcoholics; I would think that
watching television has done more to limit their horizons in the long
run. And it has also distorted our culture.
TV and politics have always made inevitable bedfellows, but the
results have been disastrous. Look at the situation we have now. Let's
say that tomorrow someone who is a political genius were to emerge --
and I'm not expecting this to happen, but say that it did. Say that a
politician emerged who seemed, for once, basically competent, who
seemed to be able to do their job as well as the average cab driver,
comic writer or journalist. If they were the most intelligent,
visionary, humane political thinker in the history of mankind, but
were also fat, had some sort of blemish or something that made them
less than telegenic, we would not be able to elect them. All we're
able to elect are these telegenic, photogenic crypto-Nazis. As long as
they look good. I suppose it's too early to go into my rant on Ronald
Reagan? That would be tasteless.

Alan Reiter on MSN watches: they will
suck
01/23/2004 02:20 PMDo those MSN SPOT watches stand a chance? Mobile data pundit Alan
Reiter says (
this) (
and this),
summarized by BB reader John Troyer:
- They're big and ugly
- They need to be recharged daily
- They crash and sometimes die when shocked with static
electricity
- They have to be turned off on planes
- Coverage is spotty compared to pagers and mobile phones
- News blurbs are 25-word useless snippets
- You have to tell MSN when and where you are traveling for it to
work away from your home area!
- Nobody's *ever* made money selling generic headlines, weather and
sports via wireless.
Reiter also says:
"However, syncing with MS Outlook is useful, and Reiter
does believe they could catch on if Microsoft repositions to emphasize
the fun aspects: downloadable watch faces, games, etc. ... [The
watches] look as if they were designed by the Borg, on a very bad day.
Many years ago Motorola introduced its first pager watch, I was there.
I was pretty excited about the product. But when I spoke with a
Motorola executive, he said the company wasn't sure whether the target
market would view the device as a smallest, sexiest pager or as the
world's ugliest watch. Unfortunately for Motorola, the view was the
latter. Pager watches have generally died quick or lingering deaths.
But the operative word is "death."

06/21/2004 01:54 PM Video Games are my addiction. Right now

BTW, now that I don't have a TV, again, I am
for the first time in my adult life, 100 percent drug-free. Hey, now I
get to say something I've always hated when other people say it. I'm
just high on life. And if you ever doubted that TV is an addiction,
let me tell you, it surely is. The same thought patterns apply. My
mind goes into idle, and snaps into "I'll just watch some TV" mode.
Just like I used to solve problems by smoking a
cigarette. Yup. Now I guess my only
crutch is this laptop. Is that an addiction. Hmmm. Maybe
it is an addiction, but if so it's like breathing air. I don't plan to
give this one up.

"
Caller Abortion" (a stunt Limbaugh used on his
show -- complete with the sound of a vacuum cleaner), "
Feminazi Frazzle," and "
John F-ing Kerry." The recipes look like they'd
make tasty drinks, but I think I'll pass on the purchase. Who really
needs a novelty, right-wing drink recipe book?
The Shame of Adult Male Virginity
The Shame of Adult Male Virginity
08/23/2004 04:39 AMMy feeling is that somewhere between the ages of 18 and 22-25 society
starts expecting men to not be virgins. Well, maybe "expecting" is
not the right word, but that's the age range were I started
feeling shame about being a virgin. There are many advantages to
being a virgin: you know you're not diseased, you know you're not a
daddy and you don't have a woman who has reached deep into your inner
feelings and can manipulate you with that leverage. A quick side note
about diseases: besides the scary lifelong and life-threatening
sexually transmitted diseases it is estimated that as many as 50% of
sexually active singles have Genital Warts, for which there is no
cure. They are extremely easy to transfer between partners and can be
a precursor to penile, cervical and rectal cancer.
Adult magazines screwed by the Internet?
Adult magazines screwed by the Internet?
11/10/2003 11:24 PMInteresting AP story about the web's impact on the economics of adult
print magazines:
After 35 years in the business of titillating and
offending, pornographer Al Goldstein says his magazine can't compete
anymore. The audience is just as large, he says, but the Internet has
transformed the product and its delivery. Just over a month ago,
Goldstein stopped publishing Screw magazine and filed for Chapter 11
bankruptcy, giving him a chance to cut costs, relaunch the magazine
and refocus attention on his Web site.
Goldstein said circulation woes throughout the field show "we are
an anachronism; we are dinosaurs; we are elephants going to the bone
cemetery to die. ... The delivery system has changed, and we have to
change with it if we want to survive."
