PayPal, The Fifth Credit Card?

PayPal, The Fifth Credit Card? 05/03/2004 06:01 PM
Not quite. But the popular online payment company's new Web services platform adds more detail to credit card purchases online.

Is PayPal The Fifth Credit Card?

Is PayPal The Fifth Credit Card? 05/03/2004 01:45 PM
After working incredibly hard in the legal arena to make sure that they weren't declared a bank, PayPal is now doing much more to appear bank-like to websites that want to take transactions. They're implementing a series of web services designed to make it easier to incorporate a PayPal option for commerce sites, along with traditional credit cards. Of course, some are pointing out that the demand just isn't there for such things. The end-users don't see much benefit if the site already has a merchant account and can offer credit card payments. There isn't much of a benefit to end users to use PayPal when they can just as easily use a credit card. The only advantage is to sites that can't afford or don't want a merchant account of their own - and they're probably already using PayPal.

Entering credit card numbers

Entering credit card numbers 02/10/2004 02:44 PM
Bruce Tognazzini writes in his Ask Tog column Top 10 Reasons to Not Shop On Line: "...Why can’t I input my credit card number the way it appears on the card? Why do I have to suck the extra spaces out, making it all but impossible to re-scan it for errors? We’re talking three spaces here, three bytes." (via Usability Views) I will quite often try to see if a credit card number field gives me enough room to enter it with spaces. If it does, I will then delete the spaces because I know so many places can't handle them. Any of you web programmers out there, tell me you couldn't write code to strip three spaces out of a credit card number? We're talking regular expressions 101 here. In a similar vein, I once asked a programmer I was working with to allow social security numbers to accept both no spaces or hyphens, and they told me the code to take hyphens out was easier than the code insisting the user enter it without hyphens....

Visa Toys With Credit Card Displays

"Visa International is experimenting with credit cards that include a small display screen where customers could view recent transactions, bank balances, or local currency exchange rates, says Deborah Arnold, Visa's vice president of global consumer strategies....

Visa expects to have produced working prototypes of the devices in about a year's time, Arnold says, although with security and other technology issues still to be ironed out, it's likely to be a few years before such cards become widely available. In addition, the LCD-like screens being used in early designs are too fragile for everyday use, Arnold says....

Another issue with the use of display screens on credit cards is cost-effectiveness, she says. 'It's all expensive--the cost of the battery, the display, hooking [the display] up to the chip. The initial cards with these displays are going to be very expensive,' she says....

Clearly, displaying personal account information on a card presents potential security concerns, and Visa is looking at technologies such as biometrics and passwords to secure access. Banks and end users will help to determine how much security is necessary, and certain information, such as points accrued through loyalty programs, might not need much protection, she says." [PCWorld.com]

An interesting idea, and you have to wonder if these catch on someday, will patrons expect to be able to read their library cards, too? Could be kind of handy to be able to whip out your library card and see which items you have checked out and when they're due.

Truly Unbelievable Credit Card Pranks

Truly Unbelievable Credit Card Pranks 06/22/2005 02:41 AM

Here’s a series of real life pranks by a guy from Zug.com who wanted to see just how important credit security was when he used his card at various stores and restaurants. He starts out slow - signing names other than his own, advances to wacky names like Beethoven, and even devolved into drawing ducks, hieroglyphics, and a little grid picture. None of it mattered. (The photos are hilarious.) Eventually he started signing blatant theft…

Credit Card Breaches Not Only Old Hat,
But Also Declining

Credit Card Breaches Not Only Old Hat,
But Also Declining
06/22/2005 02:17 AM
In the wake of CardSystems outra geous 40 million customer data exposure and its seemi ngly quaint predecessors, the Monday morning quarterbacks are weighing to explain what we've all known for a while now: security breaches of this kind are nothing new, it's just that we're finding out about them more. In fact, the evidence shows that the incidence of credit card fraud is actually declining. Turns out that banks and merchants have been tackling this issue for some time, and actually reduced illegal credit card purchases by $100 million between 2003 and 2004. The industry still has a ways to go (after all, $788 million worth of fraud is still a serious problem), but at least there are signs of improvement. The same can't be said of identity theft, which the BusinessWeek story says is slightly on the rise and probably fueling the misperception about fraud in general. Of course, identity theft is a much more damaging crime with fewer solutions than a bunch of fake charges on your credit card. And, scammers don't need to swipe tons of data to cause widespread problems. Just a couple hundred thousand people's info will do.
