A few years ago, video game company Acclaim came up with the idea of adverti sing their latest video game on cemetery tombstones. Obviously, this was a bit of a publicity stunt, but someone is now going a bit further with the idea of making better use of all that tombstone space and is trying to offer video screens for your tombstone. The idea is that sometime before you die, you can record various videos of yourself talking about whatever you want such as final messages to loved ones (though, the inventor suggests: "having the final say on a disagreement" making you wonder what's been going on in his life lately). However, given Acclaim's publicity stunt, I wonder if people could just sell advertising space on their video screen? These video screens would be interactive as well. The graveside visitor could click on the segment they wanted to watch. He even suggests hooking up the tombstone video screen to the internet, so the person who died could use one of those silly "after I die" email services to update his messages. Why not just put this on the web? Well, that's no fun for people who (apparently) want to wander aimlessly through cemeteries listening to the last thoughts of random dead people. As for the business model, well that's still a bit up in the air, but he actually suggests making the tombstones coin operated, so you have to plunk in a couple quarters to actually watch your loved one's message. Either that, or the cemetery could rent out headphones (just like airplanes) for anyone who wants to listen in on the messages from beyond the grave.

Aiirmesh is launching a pilot that offers Wi-Fi access on buses in Cerritos, Calif: Aiirmesh is the company that built a Wi-Fi network that covers the 8.6 square miles of Cerritos and now covers seven surrounding cities. In fact, this press release offers far more detail on those networks as well as what the buses look like than the actual onboard service. I'm guessing that the service is aimed at passengers but I could be wrong and it may instead serve the bus system. It's also unclear exactly what the network will look like....

Scientist Imagines Elevator Reaching 62,000 Miles Into Space: This seems so wrong on so many levels.

President Bush wants to return to the moon and put a man on Mars. But scientist Bradley C. Edwards has an idea that's really out of this world: an elevator that climbs 62,000 miles into space.

Edwards thinks an initial version could be operating in 15 years, a year earlier than Bush's 2020 timetable for a return to the moon. He pegs the cost at $10 billion, a pittance compared with other space endeavors.

Wikipedia has a huge article on this concept, in which they say this:

A space elevator would present a considerable navigational hazard, both to aircraft and spacecraft. Aircraft could be dealt with [...], but spacecraft are a more difficult problem. Over a long period of time all satellites with perigees below geostationary altitude would eventually collide with the space elevator, as their orbits precess around Earth.

Yeah, that sounds safe.
