ETECH Notes: Folksonomy, or How I
Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the
Mess
03/17/2005 03:56 AM
Cory Doctorow: Here are my notes from "Fo lksonomy, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Mess," a conversation between Clay Shirky, Stewart "Flickr" Butterfield, Joshua "Delicious" Schachter and Jimmy "Wikipedia" Wales at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego. Folksonomy is the process of letting users generate and apply their own tags to shared items (such as blog-posts, encyclopedia entries, photos, links, lists or interests, or what have you) and then discovering which tegs users share with one another. Unlike previous ventures into this field, the tags aren't "controlled" -- any user can invent one and any user can apply them to anything, and yet it all works.
Jimmy: We launched ours last summer after knowing we needed it for a long time. For the first two weeks in English Wikipedia, it was a madhouse with all kinds of categorization. The Germans were more reserved but after a few weeks it caught on there. Eventually, because people could adjust categories, it all settled down. We did it because that's the Wikipedia way -- we never considered doing it any other way.

Stewart: It's not really categorization on Flickr -- it's about letting users remember. If I add the "Norma" tag to pix of my mom, whose name is Norma, I don't think it goes into the Norma category. The unfortunate thing about the term "folksonomy" is that it implies that it's a replacement for categorization. People categorize things by noting what they do or don't have: mammals have hair and live babies; does it have property a? then it's a whatever.

Joshua: I was collecting 20,000 links in a text-file, and somewhere along the way I started adding a hash mark and some text, so I could e.g. grep out all the WiFi links and send them to a friend. Later I built a Web version so I could send an URL to a friend, but it was standalone. Eventually I made it massively multiplayer. The interesting group behavior is the tagging that isn't categorization, e.g., "To read" -- not a category, though it has a big group and a lot of social and user context. People make tags for groups working together, workflow in RSS -- that's what's most surprising.

Toss it back and forth long enough and a nugget of conventional wisdom eventually comes to be treated as fact. With regard to Apple and the Macintosh, the prime example is the idea that Apple made a catastrophic error in the 1980s by not licensing the Macintosh.

Stop the music

Stop the music 04/09/2004 04:02 PM

I’ve been viewing a lot of sites while reviewing for BlogSnob and I’m a bit annoyed. What’s with all the music on people’s sites? Is this 1998 again?

In case you were thinking about having your favorite tune load up when people visit your site—don’t. It takes a long time to load. The sound quality generally stinks. It crashes some browsers. And most of all, your musical tastes are not likely the same as all of your visitors. I have my own musical selections, thank you. I don’t need to hear yours.

Now You Can Sell Your Music On iTunes

Now You Can Sell Your Music On iTunes 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
(HOLLYWOOD) - Independent artists and labels will be glad to learn that they don’t have to be distributed by a major label to get a distribution contract with the iTunes Music Store, now revolutionizing music sales with millions of dollars in downloads.

But finding out how to do it was often a painful and time-consuming process - until now.

iTunes Music Store

iTunes Music Store 07/05/2004 02:15 PM

I used the iTunes Music Store for the first time today. I actually didn't want to install it, but Apple is bundling it with QuickTime these days, so you have to get one to get the other. Then my wife, Annie, heard about it, and she wanted to try it.

It was a great experience. It's pretty much a matter of creating an account, finding a song, then clicking "Buy Song." You can even surpress the "Do you really want this song?" warning so you can just click with wild abandon, racking up $0.99 charges right and left.

The real test came when I taught Annie how to use it (because, you know, you can never have enough Celine Dion). She took to it right away. The search has a spellcheck feature, which is handy when trying to spell "Alanis Morrissette," and the idea of double-clicking a song to hear a clip is very intutive. Annie doesn't know the names of any of the songs she likes, but she knows what they sound like, so she just kept double-clicking until she heard what she wanted, then she hit "Buy Song."

The only glitch we ran into was that we first fired it up under my Windows account, logging into iTunes as Annie. Now, when we open iTunes under Annie's Windows account, again logging in to iTunes under her account, none of the "Purchased Music" we bought under my Windows account is there. For some reason, the purchased music is tied to a specific Windows account, not an iTunes account. I'm not quite sure what to do about this — if you know, drop me a line.

Some music isn't available as single tracks, for some reason. For instance, Annie wanted a song off the De-lovely soundtrack, but it was marked "Album Only." Depressing, but I'm sure there's some high-powered business reason for it.

We haven't tryed burning anything to a CD yet, but when I do, I'll let you all know how it goes. Hats off to Apple — iTunes is a great piece of work.
