Sony Corp. has unveiled its first hard-disk drive-based digital music player to bear the Walkman name. The device was launched on Thursday as the Walkman brand marked its 25th anniversary. The NW-HD1 features a 20GB hard-disk drive and is, according to the company, the smallest music player at this capacity. It measures 89 millimeters by 62.1 millimeters by 13.8 millimeters and weighs 110 grams. The capacity is half that of Apple Computer Inc.'s highest capacity iPod, but Sony says its player trumps Apple's in terms of the number of songs it can store: 13,000 on the Walkman versus 10,000 on the iPod.

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison 06/09/2004 09:10 AM

pocket_vs_ipod.jpg imageIf you want to stumble through the Babelfish translation, AV Watch Japan has a review of the Sony VAIO Pocket, the hard disk-based music player that's getting the most buzz as Sony's attempt to create an iPod-killer. Among other things, they compare sizes (!), and really that battery nodule on the back of the VAIO Pocket does it a disservice in pictures -- it's not nearly as big as it seems. Of course, the chink in the VAIO Pocket's armor is its inability to play any format but Sony's proprietary ATRAC3, meaning every song you want to copy to the VAIO Pocket has to be converted. 20GB of conversion is going to be sucky, but manageable; it's really just the principle of the thing (even Apple, head up their AAC, lets the iPod play MP3).

Competitors 06/03/2004 07:11 AM

In 1991, I wrote a training manual for Stewart Alsop's Demo conference (it's now Chris Shipley's show) that coached software developers on how to demo software. The piece is a little dated, using the software buzzwords of the time, but the basic ideas never go out of date. Focus on comprehension, find the memorable feature, know that your prospect isn't as interested in your software as you are, practice your demo a lot, never use new software in your demos, and watch out for competitors who try to derail your pitch.

In the last few days we wasted way too much time because of a curveball thrown by a couple of really nasty competitors. It's true, we're competing over something that doesn't make money, a format, but as they say in academia, the less there is at stake, the more vicious the competiton, or something like that. I've been Mr Naive about this. Not no more.

I'm going to work with users, they seem to appreciate what I do. The techies and developers, until further notice, are bums. I almost want to say I hate what the technology industry has become, but when has it been anything but back-stabbing, low-road bullshit. We could be so damned powerful if we just worked together, but that clearly isn't what's going on.

AT&T Wants To Scare Off VoIP Competitors

AT&T Wants To Scare Off VoIP Competitors 08/20/2004 07:42 PM
AT&T, who just dumped their residential landline business in favor of VoIP is now trying to suggest that VoIP telephony is going to be a tiny business -- worth only about $2 billion to the $25 billion-a-year company. There are plenty of ways to respond to this. First, just because they're a $25 billion-a-year company now, that doesn't mean they always will be. Second, everyone knows that VoIP brings in less direct revenue. Part of the reason customers are signing up for VoIP is that it's cheap. So, saying that it's such a "small" market isn't really stating anything new. In fact, it seems pretty clear that this statement is being said just to scare off competitors who are thinking about entering the market. He's hoping they hear that it's a small market and forget about it. Of course, if it were really such a small market, why would AT&T bother? Because they realize that the direct market for VoIP telephony is just the beginning. VoIP opens up many new opportunities to provide services and applications to users that will offer many more ways to profit from the traditional telephony system. In fact, as VoIP establishes itself as a platform, expect to see more providers drop the entranc e fee towards zero, as it helps them build up other areas of their business (and cause trouble for those who are only relying on voice telephony).
