German Walkman Inventor Wins Battle

German Walkman Inventor Wins Battle
Against Sony, Fixes Gaze on Apple
06/07/2004 12:09 PM

walkman_wm1.jpg imageGerman inventor Andreas Pavel has just settled a 20 year court battle with Sony over the origins of the Walkman, a device Pavel claimed to have patented in 1977. While Sony has spent the better part of two decades trying to ignore his claims of invention (despite the fact they paid him royalty fees for the first few years of the device's life), Pavel's near bankruptcy after a 3.7 million dollar court battle was finally rewarded by a confidential agreement in which Pavel was reportedly paid off to the tune of several million euros. Pavel, cock of the walk, is now planning to take a swipe at Apple, whose iPod has become the Walkman of this generation. Even better, Pavel has another patent in the wings: a 1989 US filing for a technology that combines the features of a portable audio player and a mobile phone. That patent will be decided on 'soon.'

Better German tubemap

Better German tubemap 07/30/2004 05:06 AM

Horst sez, "You published a link to an alternative London Underground Map ("what if the Germans had won WWII?") in German on July 29th. Problem is, as any German native speaker might tell you, many of the names of this map are Mock-German rather than real German and don't really make sense. "A while ago I attempted a real translation of the London Underground map into German, with station names being real, literal or etymological translations of the English placenames into German. Most German readers of my map agree that it's funnier than Myrtle's map (the one that you linked to).

"Incidentally, the translation of the London map into German was part of a project that started with a translation of the underground map of Vienna, Austria into English, which might be of more entertainment value as most of your readers can actually read it. Link (Thanks, Horst!< /i>)

German licenses launched 06/11/2004 05:55 PM

We've recently flipped the switch on German Creative Commons licenses. Like the recent Brazil, Finland, and Japan licenses, in addition to the rewritten legal code that is now based on German law, the license interface is now available in German, as well as the licenses themselves.

Thanks goes out to the folks at both The Insitute for Information Law at the University of Karlsruhe and Institut für Rechtsfragen der Freien und Open Source Software (ifrOSS) for all their help along the way. This press release has more details about the launch.
