The $7 Micropayment Shopping Spree

The $7 Micropayment Shopping Spree 01/07/2004 06:33 PM
I'm still skeptical of almost all micropayment plans, as they seem to add a lot more friction to transactions, and they tend to be for items that shouldn't be priced on a per item basis. The Boston Globe went out to test out a few different micropayment systems by spending a grand total of $7 on a variety of items, and the results do little to change my mind. Most of what they bought could probably already be found for free online - or, if not, didn't sound like it was worth the few pennies they paid for it. In most cases, it was content from people who were not well known. As such, they're probably better off giving away their content to try to attract a larger audience. If they have a big enough audience, then they can turn that fact into some sort of paying deal. Otherwise, they're limiting themselves against plenty of competition that has no problem promoting themselves online for free.

AP - The deputy, a 51-year-old woman just 5 feet tall, was simply no match for the inmate she was escorting to the courtroom, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound former college linebacker on trial for rape. Authorities say Brian Nichols overpowered deputy Cynthia Hall, took her gun, and easily gained access to the courtroom, where he went on to kill the judge and a court reporter. Security cameras captured images of him overpowering the deputy, but no one, it turned out, was watching the screens.

AP - With a choppy but ultimately solid 2004 behind it, Wall Street is looking ahead to the so-called January effect, when new money enters the market and drives stock prices higher. But with questions remaining about the strength of the labor market, Friday's job creation report from the Labor Department could determine the fate of the New Year's buying spree.

We're Hiring an Editor

We're Hiring an Editor 04/04/2005 08:19 AM

Except for the daily thoughts of suicide and irreparable liver and lung damage, I've had a great time as editor of Gizmodo over the last year. But if I keep up on this schedule—no vacation, ridiculous hours, no sick days—I'm going to have to find something more substantial to suck the life out of than children. I've been looking for a full-time editor to help with the site, but haven't had much luck so far. I've been hesitant to post something on the site, because historically, along with a lot of quality submissions, it's also been an excuse for all the people who AIM me in the middle of day asking me if the "PSP cn ply moviez" to try to fool me into giving them free electronics to review. That said, I know out there among the readership is a person who knows gadgetry in specific and technology in general like the back of their hand, can write their way out of a paper bag, and is full of excitement about working for an editor who is increasingly fed up with the pointless tail-chasing and money-grubbing hypocrisy of the worldwide technology market and takes out his impotent internet rage on real-life subordinates.

If that sounds like an awesome time, I'll explain what you need to do after the jump.
