Roland Piquepaille says,
Traditional wheelchairs used by the elderly and people
with severe disabilities have some limited functions and flexibility.
Their users often need help from nurses or relatives. Several teams
are currently at work to develop robotic wheelchairs to overcome these
limitations. For example, researchers from the University of Essex and
the Institute of Automation at Beijing are developing the
RoboChair. RoboChair will be equipped with a vision system and
a 3G wireless communication system. It will be able to avoid
collisions and to plan a path. Meanwhile, Professor Ray Jarvis of
Monash University’s Intelligent Robotics Centre in Australia, is
building another robotic wheelchair which will help people to travel off the
beaten track (PDF format, 1 page, 131 KB). His prototype system
combines robotic navigation with a four-wheel drive. It automatically
ad apts itself to the user’s capabilities and takes control when
needed. You'll find more details and a picture in this
overview. Keep in mind that there are still major issues to solve,
such as security and costs, before these robotic wheelchairs become
available.

The Free
Wheelchair Mission is an organization that aims to provide free
wheelchairs to those in countries too poor to afford proper medical
equipment. Inspired by the sight of a crippled Moroccan woman dragging
herself across a dirt road (and a little old timey religion) inspired
the mission's founder Don Schoendorfer to develop a simply-designed
wheelchair that combines a lawn chair, some steel tubing, and a couple
of bicycle wheels to create a real wireless mobility device,
all for about $42 worth of parts. Even better, the assembly plans for
the wheelchair are freely available, and they encourage anyone to use
them to create their own.
The Free Wheelchair Mission shipped 10,000 chairs in December.

The Free Wheelchair Mission is a religious NGO that produces
wheelchairs out of $41.17 worth of parts, and makes its plans for same
available for free online. The project was inspired by the site of a
legless Moroccan woman dragging herself across a dirt road. Now the
project works to provide low-cost wheels to all comers around the
world.

What's a namber? A
namber is a word that acts as a mnemonic for a number. For
example, 65 is
drum, and 181 is
push.
A
namber address uses an arbitrarily-chosen list of nambers
to represent each of the numbers from 0 to 255 in order to assemble
four words to represent any IP address. Metafilter.com's namber is
earth
.frog.brown.tooth, and mysteryrobot.com conveniently provides
translation and forwarding to the real IP
address.

That way if I talked about FOAF - for instance - someone like

This would create an incredible two-way kind of capability because
systems could then communictae back to me based upon what I said. I

, a pointer to the unsurprising fact that Japanese businesspeople are
discovering the virtues of not wearing a tie; if you’ve ever been to
work in a Tokyo summer you’ll understand why this is a good thing.
But, in a uniquely Japanese way, they’re not just doing it,
they’re mounting an official government-backed
campaign. But mostly I wrote this so I could slip in a pointer to this picture.

03/29/2005 02:08 AMAnything but cool, I wanted my money back at the end of this one.
Catching a John Travolta film is always a gamble and he was alright in
this, playing his typical Vincent Vega character, but the rest of it
was just crap. I expected to like Vince Vaughn's character more, but
it took about two seconds for you to get his whole schtick and then it
just became really really tiresome. I did laugh out loud once --
Cedric the Entertainer as a reformed
gangbanger-turned-rapper/producer/millionaire rolls up with his posse
and they're all wearing tshirts with basketball jerseys over them and
Cedric has a **button-down** shirt with a jersey over it -- but that
was the only highlight. Metacritic, I
will never doubt you again.

06/08/2004 10:20 AMSome fucking misbrain of a spammer, not worthy to rot on a skewer in
the deepest pits of Hell has faked my email address as the return
address, and now I'm getting about a billion of "We cannot
deliver your mail" -messages from mailer daemons. Problem being,
SpamAssassin does not pick them up since they appear as legit bounce
messages. So my inbox is full of spam. This ain't the crap I was
speaking of!
Wonderful double effect: if the spam goes through, then the recipient
sees it; if it is bounced, then I see it.
You know, I have this wonderful blunt katana I could use to slowly rip
the guts off every spammer, then whirl them around my head before
tossing them over the fence for the pigs to eat. Then I would watch
these gutless (literally!) illegitimate sons of bastards fall over,
and kick them in the head just before they hit the ground, so their
brains would burst out of their ears, and they would bounce back up
before the final collapse to a mindless heap of goo.
ANGER! RAGE! KILL! MAIM! INJURE!

02/01/2005 09:52 PMDo you ever have something really exciting that you want to share
with the world, but you're not allowed to talk about it? It drives you
nuts that you have to keep it to yourself, so you quietly mention it
to Janet, but Chrissy overhears you from the kitchen, and thinks
you're dying, so she tells Larry, and pretty soon you're attending
your own wake down at the Regal Beagle. You think this could be a
chance to get Mr. Roper to give you a break on the rent, and maybe get
a little something-something from that Kaylnn girl who passes out
skates at the roller rink, but Mrs. Roper finds out the truth, and
somehow you're learning an embarassing lesson in front of all your
friends, rather than getting lucky on the waterbed in your cousin's
van conversion.
In other words, I've been sitting on this big news for weeks, and I
just got the green light to announce it. So pay attention,
Chrissy:
I am writing a weekly column for The Onion A/V Club! Yeah,
that's right! The Onion A/V Club! Wooo!
Check out the spiffy announcement:
The Onion A.V. Club also extends a hearty welcome to a new contributor
who comes to us from Hollywood via the Internet. Each week,
actor/author/gaming enthusiast/icon/renaissance man Wil Wheaton, who
maintains an online presence at wilwheaton.net, will take a look back
to games past with his Games Of Our Lives column, reaching beyond
Pac-Man and Donkey Kong to find the dusty arcade games and worn-out
cartridges that paved the way for the games of today.
(When I read that, I told my editor, "I love it. Can I just tell
you how happy I am that it's not all 'Star Trek Star Trek Star Trek
Star Trek (tiny font: writes some stuff too.)'?"
He said, "Well, the original draft referred to you as 'the
spunky lad who saved the universe' and then went on to say 'Star Trek,
Star Trek, Star Trek.' Then I had second thoughts.")
Can you freakin' believe that I get to write for them?! Holy shit!
Writing this column is as much fun as doing Love Machine at
ACME each week. I get a chance to be funny, add something pretty
prestigious to my resume, and I finally have an excuse for playing so
many classic video games. I mean, how many people do you know who
could deduct an X-arcade
Controller? :)
I did an interview with The Onion A/V Club in 2002. If you haven't
seen it, you can read it here.
My first Games of Our Lives appears tomorrow. Check it out, and let
me know what you think!

Cool tune: Not Going Alone
Cool tune: Not Going Alone
01/26/2004 04:12 PMPaul Kimball (a good friend from my college days) posted his first
GarageBand composition,
Not Going Alone.
I first heard it last night, and it’s still in my head this
morning. It’s more demo than radio-ready, of course, but the
feel of it comes through with the everyman guitar sound and especially
the melody and harmonies and Paul’s singing.

pto = FOAF + RSS + open APIs.... In a reader's 'tip' to Weblogs,
Inc., Ben Nolan writes, "The first of the Social Networking sites
using FOAF. Foaf-based communities will likely become the second or
third major social networking 'network'." According to Ben, "Zopto is
building on the idea of foaf + rss + open APIs. It's a web-based
application for creating and managing foaf file, and the basic
framework for all the identity and collaborative tools that can build
off RSS + Foaf... Zopto is currently in "alpha testing" and is only
available to selected users." [The Social Software
Weblog]
The next generation social nets are here!
Powered by FOAF, feature rich (including blogging, Listings,
eCommerce, RSS, etc.) - these new systems are a hallmark of what's to
come.
Ecademy has already shown that different kind of people want
dikfferent kinds of features. Zopto is fresh out of the box -
hoping to play along. I haven't been able to get on - yet - but I'm
trying.

01/23/2004 06:34 PM...that don't seem so cool now that I'm older.
One in an
occasionally series.
My best friend when I was little (who was also named Meg but is a
Margaret not a Meghan) and I used to go to gymnastics several times a
week. We were very limber and could do splits with both our right legs
and our left legs forward. We were also very into the movie Grease and I had the
album (which was an awesome double-album with pictures from the movies
in the middle). So when Margaret would come over after school (I
always called her Margaret because otherwise it was like I was talking
to myself), we'd always play Grease on my parents' stereo. And for
some reason, we'd do splits. And we'd hold them for the whole side of
the album, because for some reason this seemed like a really really
really cool thing to do.
It occurred to me as I was telling Gina about this today at work
that perhaps it, in fact, wasn't as cool as it seemed at the time.
