Ventis Media announced the release today of MediaMonkey 2.2 which, for the first time, gives Windows users the ability to synch their music collections with non-iPod portable audio devices as easily as with an iPod. MediaMonkey is designed for large music collections containing tens of thousands of songs, and is expected, along with Microsoft's upcoming Windows Media Player 10, to place increased pressure on Apple's iTunes/iPod franchise. Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player

Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player 08/23/2004 10:51 AM

auvi-thumb.jpg imageNow this is the way to challenge the iPod: go smaller. While most players appeal to the nerd core by packing in tons of obscure (if welcome) features, the Auvi SA1500 tries a different tack, cramming a 20GB hard drive into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini. Add in a 20 hour playback time and it's easy to call this one a contender even without having seen one in person. The price is too high; UK retailer Firebox is expected to have them on sale soon for around $450, although for whatever reason the UK always seems to get nailed with higher prices, so a US model would probably be cheaper. If they can get it out there, though, and not screw up the user interface, the SA1500 will definitely turn a few heads.

Apple's iPod stokes MP3 player market
'boom'
03/17/2005 03:27 AM
In an effort to keep the iPod frenzy going, Apple has gone so far as to offer lower cost devices like the iPod Shuffle. But Apple is not the only one standing to makes some serious profits here. Nope, there are a variety of other companies riding on the backs of the computer company in an effort to turn a buck or two themselves….

There is good and bad news for Apple Computer's market share numbers in the calendar fourth quarter. The Cupertino, Calif.-based computer company's desktop market share is on the rise, while the portable market is showing a decline. While numbers are not available to show the impact of Mac mini, research analysts expect to see continued good news for the company's desktop market share in 2005 as Mac mini sales increase.

mini-02.jpg imageAs eagle-eyed reader Thomas Shebest pointed out to me, it looks as if Apple has removed the Mini (car) from its BMWYourIpod page. Either the Mini isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

Griffin Technology Inc. on Thursday announced the release of their AirClick Remote for iPod and iPod mini, a remote control designed, as you might have guessed, to work with Apple's iPod and iPod mini. The AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60 feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

Win an iPod mini at the South Beach iPod Garage Party

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players

Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

portable_panasonic.jpg image

Panasonic introduced a few portable audio players yesterday that we forgot to mention (although they leaked way back in October), in the "D-snap Audio" line. We'll start with the "SV-SD100V" and "SV-SD90" square-shaped players with SD card slot (and only an SD card slot). They also have a mirrored organic EL display, and compatibility with MP3, WMA and AAC. In fact, the SV-SD100V throws in an FM tuner and voice recorder.

Also announced were the "SV-MP720V" and "SV-MP730V." Their interesting "two block" design actually won Panasonic a design award. The two units vary only in capacity, color variations and price. Both are MP3 and WMA compatible and have an FM tuner/voice recorder you probably won't ever use. A sort of disappointing 10-hour battery life on these.
