Apple
09/03/2004 08:23 AMAsustek Computer has received OEM orders for the iPod mini digital
music player from Apple Computer, according to market sources. Asustek
is the second Taiwan-based manufacturer of the digital devices since
Inventec Appliances also produces the iPod for Apple. Asustek will
assemble and ship the iPod to Apple from its plant in Suzhou, Jiangsu
Province (China), the sources said.
The iPod orders will help Asustek in working toward its goal of
becoming a key provider of consumer electronics products, the sources
noted. In related news, Inventec is expected to continue to supply
Apple with its current iPod models. In addition, Inventec is also
likely to secure orders for a similar version of the iPod from
Hewlett-Packard (HP), the sources said. Apple and HP entered into an
agreement earlier this year for HP to resell the iPod under the HP
brand.
Asustek and Inventec both declined to comment on the report, citing
client confidentiality

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PMBack in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to
differe
ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were
focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted
to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this
was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed
of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed
- and many people want it more for the always on connection than the
speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study
shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US,
many
more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower
price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is
good enough for what most people want to do with their connections
now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get
that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can
currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people
would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is
cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many
subscribers as well.

12/17/2004 06:31 PMI'm in the lovely lounge at the Newark Airport, waiting for my 19-hour
flight to Singapore. But my client put me into business class which
looks pretty spiffy, so I'm not complaining. Besides, I get to go to
Singapore. I got here at 6pm from Boston, and waited until 7:15 for
the Singapore Air counter to open. For half an hour, a crew of the
young and beautiful (six women, two men ... and guess who was in
charge! (Hint: He pees standing up)) put out poinsettias, stacked
cards, and unrolled carpets, all without ever making eye contact with
us....

seemed to go well. I bugged out at 11 to see if I could see just a

12/17/2004 06:31 PMOn the advice of my host, I took a taxi to the Indian Temple in
Chinatown, a plain building crowned by a colorful pyramid of
sculptures of gods. The streets around it are lined with little
open-front shops selling tourist junk. After wandering in and out of
dozens, I bought my son a present (he's reading this so I can't say
what) and almost got the bargaining thing right: It was marked $8 (=
US$4.80), I offered $5, she said $7, and I lost my nerve so we didn't

12/17/2004 06:31 PMLet's see. I left Boston on Sunday at 6, and flew from Newark, NJ at
11pm. They served dinner at 12:30 AM (rice and spinach because heaven
knows we vegetarians don't like to combine elemental foodstuffs into
interesting new creations) and I "slept" from 1:30-7:30AM. For some
reason, they didn't serve breakfast until 1:30pm on Monday, then at
5:30pm on Monday we landed here, except that it was 6:30AM on Tuesday.

12/19/2004 03:36 PMPuhlease! I was there for three days. The only overview I'm entitled
to was from the airplane when we took off, and on that basis I can
report that Singapore is mainly cloudy. Now I'm back in the Newark
airport, waiting for the flight to Boston. Is there a longer
commercial flight than Singapore-Newark? I'm glad to be home, eager to
see my family, and would love to find a way to go back to Singapore

Spam Fines For Singapore
05/25/2004 02:49 PMIf you thought US laws to prevent spam were ineffective and misguided,
this link should be amusing. Singapore is
considering a 58 cent fine per spam email. No
details on how that fine was reached or what the definition of spam
will be, but if the Singaporean government can stop spam, no one will
complain. However, spammers are a notoriously difficult lot to hunt
down, and maybe especially so, if the threat of caning could be an
option.
