Sites like LiveJournal and Tribe are poised to be the next big thing
on the Web in 2004, but their security and privacy practices are more
like 1997.
I find that most time, there is better security from those who
know little about it but run smaller "Social Network" software, i.e.
PHPNuke, Post Nuke, etc. Some of the security features I have seen in
these Open Source software are just know showing up in things like...

Ruby is making her
first-ever trip to San Francisco for PlaNetwork. Wish I was
going too, now.
[The Doc Searls Weblog]
Here's a post from Ruby on 'e-names'. :-)
HE-names
I'm struggling to find the relevance of PlaNetwork's
"e-names." The fact that it was apparently developed by a gaggle
of white guys doesn't help. The next panel is all white guys too. At least I know we'll
break out of it in the session since I'll be on the mic (among
others)..
-------------------
That's ONE of the reasons I'm not at Planetwork today. But
I'll be there tomorrow to challenge Reid Hoffman on his lock-in
strategy with LinkedIn. And to recruit for the FOAFnet.

Home network complexity challenges

installation complexity – quantified by

satisfaction with and brand loyalty to
home networking products and services
09/04/2004 02:40 AMCustomer satisfaction and brand loyalty regarding home networking
equipment are related directly to product ease of installation and
operation, according to Parks Associates’ Primary Perspectives:
Complexity and Customer Satisfaction in the Networked Home. The study
finds that satisfaction declines precipitously – as much as 25% – if a
customer is required to make two or more service calls to install and
operate home network equipment. Progress has been made in simplifying
these products through standard device drivers and graphics-based
installation wizards, but in order to secure long-term success in this
market, developers and providers should continue devising new ways to
reduce the complexity of home networking solutions. [PRWEB Sep 4,

03/08/2004 11:16 PMAs we approach March 13, lots of stories are being submitted
about the DARPA Grand
Challenge. Since our last update, Nature has
posted a short article on
the race with a small photo gallery of robots and a note about
environmentalists concerned that the event might disturb endangered
desert tortoises. DARPA now has a crew of "tortoise marshals" rounding
up any tortoises that stray into the event area. Doug McGray sent us a
link to his in-depth Wired
article (which includes quite a few photos). Seth Cabe emailed to
say that the Team
LoGHIQ website has been updated with new photos and video of their
robot. Globalstar issued a press release
recently saying they will provide tracking services for the race. Data
will be
collected from each vehicle and relayed via the Globalstar satellite
constellation allowing DARPA to update a map throughout the event.
And,
last for today, the L.A. Daily news recently ran a story
about the Spirit of Vegas
team, who aren't going to finish their robot in time for the race.

03/06/2004 02:03 AMAs the DARPA Grand
Challenge approaches, articles about teams and their robots are
begining to show up in lots of local papers. The Baton Rouge Advocate
has an article
on University of Louisiana at Lafayette's CajunBot.
CajunBot also rated an article
in the Lafayette Advertiser. You can read about the University of
Florida's Team CIMAR
Navigator in a recent newswise
article. The Pittsburgh

Team's Sandstorm. And the San
