Latest DVD Burners Reach 16X
Latest DVD Burners Reach 16X
08/03/2004 10:28 AMBenQ's latest product can burn DVDs at 16x, which means you can
burn a DVD in less than eight minutes. Best part is that this burner
only costs $149. Compared to the price of other burners BenQ's burner
is a pretty good deal. Sill this reminds me all too much of the CD-RW
speed wars not too long ago.
The already active DVD burner market is getting another speed upgrade,
from 12X to 16X for write-once media. We looked at a drive with the
new capability: BenQ's $149 DW1600 DVD+ReWriter double-layer DVD
burner, a shipping IDE unit that can write DVD+R at 16X and does it
with a few brands of 8X media.
In PC World Test Center tests with bundled software, the device took a
slothful 7 minutes, 45 seconds to write 4.35GB of data on
preproduction 16X media. In our hands-on testing with Ahead Nero
Burning ROM, however, the drive wrote a 4.35GB DVD movie structure in
6 minutes flat. Software and vagaries in preproduction discs are
probably behind the speed difference. Alas, that 6 minutes represents
only a 30-second boost over the speed of 12X drives.

Taiwanese Makers Open Up 16x DVD Burners
Taiwanese Makers Open Up 16x DVD Burners
08/21/2004 10:43 AMASUSTeK Computer, the world’s largest maker of mainboards, and
Pioneer, one of the world’s biggest producers of electronic equipment,
recently began to ship their new DVD burners that are capable of
recording DVDs at 16x speed, broadening the offerings of high-speed
disc recorders on the market.
The latest DVD burner from ASUS, DRW-1604P, is capable of recording
DVD±R discs at 16x, DVD±RW discs at 4x, DVD+R DL (Dual Layer) at 4x,
CD-R discs at 32x, CD-RW discs at 24x and also read DVD-ROM and CD-ROM
discs at 16x and 40x speeds respectively. The optical disc drive is
equipped with technologies aimed to avoid buffer underrun and other
errors while writing. Pioneer’s DVR-A08XLA recorder boasts the same
specification, as ASUSTeK is an OEM supplier for Pioneer.
Earlier this year when Philips Electronics initiated production of its
DVD recorders capable of burning DVD discs at 16x speed some Japanese
and Taiwanese companies, such as Pioneer, Sony, BenQ, Lite-On and
ASUSTeK said they would postpone the volume production of 16x DVD
burners at least till the end of July citing inadequate supply of
appropriate laser diodes because of insufficient yields as well as
necessity to match 16x DVD burners with 16x DVD+R discs.
